What event is hapening on the 17th of August? MacWorld Paris isn't until September.
It's an average of readers' guesses, so those dates don't generally fall into line with scheduled events.

So, if I were to buy a mini today...I'm better off with 40 gig HD at 5400 than the 80 gig HD at 4200. Doesn't the faster processor with the 80 gig make up for the slower rpm of the 80 gig HD? Or is the 4200 HD just plain not worth getting right now?

BTW, I'm a newbie here, so go easy. :)

You can't tweek a 1.25 into beating a 1.43 (on xbench, it's been tried)

If you bought the mini 1.25 and replaced it with a 60GB Hitachi 7200 rpm, you would still come up short against the 1.43 with the slow 80.

Here are the xbench numbers to prove it!

I have used both, and they are both slow until you upgrade RAM!

Think Secret says no immediate Mac Mini updates

I would guess an Ibook speed bump on July 11th. 1.5 GHZ G5 for top models. Mac Mini updates might follow at Mac Expose Paris :( .

irony that the emac has better specs than the mac mini... i mean heck.. apple did say the emac was supposed to be only for education at one point...

I placed an order on June 15th for a mini 1.42 with all the fixin's (AP/BT, SuperDrive, 512 ram, 80gig) Canadian Applestore Online.

Original ship date: 6/27
Update on 6/27 said it would ship 7/1
Update on 7/1 said it will ship 7/8

I haven't seen any note on my online order re: substitution, or upgrade.

On one hand I don't mind the delay, as it means my Visa won't get charged for a short time still... on the other hand, if they are announcing an update - I want the new version! They say that since it's been "Sent to Manufacturing" that I cannot cancel or change the order.

I just want my new mini! :(

That´s bogus!

You should be able to cancel your order if Apple doesn´t keep their delivery promises!

Shame on you Apple!

You want to put a 2 GB PC2700 SODIMM in a Mac Mini? *boggle* If you can even find one, the RAM is worth more than the computer!
Yeah, it would be pricey, but it would allow more stuff to run at the same time. Not that I'm trying to overload the mini, but it would be a nice option, even it's it one that is 1/2 the cost of the high end mini.

I think where the speed of the hard drive would really make a difference is in video editing. Granted the Mini is not really intended for editing, but the specs on the Mini are at least as good as my 2 1/2 year old 1Ghz G4 80GB iMac which I use for editing all the time. The only downside to the Mini for that purpose is the 4200 rpm HD. I'm not sure if the 80GB drive is fast enough to import DV video without dropping frames or audio sync. And the 40GB is definately too small. I'm hoping with rev B they'll put a 7200rpm HD at least in the high end model, and a better video chip.

Would be nice to have a faster internal drive in the mini and I'm holding out for a Seagate 120gb 7200 (they have a 5400 100Gb out there now, but if I'm going to do the internal swap, I'd much rather go from 4200 to 7200 than just the small bump to 5400).

I don't use my mini for much video editing (iMovie HD and would like to learn Final Cut Pro), but I can say that the slower drive has caused some CD burning to fail if you've got minimal to moderate disc use going on at the same time. To burn discs, I need to stop just about everything to get a good burn, and at 8x for audio and 4x for data.

I'm wondering if a faster disc will help. For now, I've got an older 80gb 3.5 sitting around that I'll get an external firewire case for and use that for some storage until I can afford to get a 200gb or 300gb external drive.

This is torture...

I'm Starting to lose hope. This upgrade is beggining to feel immanent and not imminent. I keep reading speculation about this upgrade coming anytime from August to sometime in 2006!
I don't care where this ship springs a "leak" from, It won't cause the whole thing to go under.
Someone throw me a lifejacket! :D

I'm sure they'll be releasing a newer G5 PowerMac eventually, maybe with the dual cores everybody's talking about, but remember -- they have *at least* 2 years before that particular line switches to Intel....

Uh... really? Even after Steve said that the entire line would be switched over by the beginning of 2007? So, if the Power Mac were the last to switch, it would be switched about a year and a half from now... And that's at least two years?

1.5GHz G5 iBook! :D WOOT :D

I want one!! Hehehe...

Of course, I know you meant G4, but I couldn't resist... ;)

I don't think the ibooks can be updated until the minis are. The last thing I could see apple wanting is the more-portable ibook line to more powerful then their current mac mini line. None the less, they could probably deal with the mac mini line being more powerful then their ibook line. Then again, the ibook has been the longest model to go without a update and is in dire need of one (especially the 12" with no CTO with a superdrive as of yet and slowest mac processor on any model at 1.2 ghz G4). That being said, if we see a ibook update I am sure we'll see a mini update. Not necessarily vice versa though. Personally I would think both updates may happen simutaneously, and maybe within a week... Regardless, it'll either go updated to keep sales strong until the transition begins to occur and get some sales out of impulsive buyers and students/employees/etc. looking for a new computer for 2005/2006 (especially students for the school year, taking advantage of the free ipod mini education incentive). But I don't think we'll see any major updates, redesigns, etc. until MWSF in January where (I hope) we'll see the first Mac's with intel inside. It wouldn't suprise me if apple introduced one last update session to their ibook and mac mini lines this summer to hold out until January, nor would it suprise me for apple just to ride on the iPod's coattails and special offers like the free ipod mini education offer until January. Really, there's nothing I think apple will do that will suprise me to much, whehter they wait or release a couple last updates to carry them until intel-transition time. I guess I would be suprised to see updates on any of their non-ibook/mac-mini models or a 5th gen iPod so shortly after the update of the 4th-gen to color. But we'll see, hopefully more to talk about come the 7th or 11th...

didn't you watch the keynote. telling someone they're wrong when in fact they are right makes you look stupid.

Mac mini Update

I love my mac mini, I have a 1.42/512/80/combo
I'm graphic design student, i love it.. but i don't like the video card, obviusly it's cool by a mini's price, but I hope that apple sit down head and update the video card, I don't know maybe a 64 Mb of video it's ok..

My sister needs a new computer to replace her aging PC. I just switched to an iMac, which I like. I want to get her a Mini since she has a nice LCD already, but there are a few outstanding issues. I won't touch a Mini until they put a decent (e.g. >1 year useful life) video card with 64MB of memory in it (Radeon 9600 makes sense to me, here). The Mini also needs BT and Airport built into the base config like the other model lines are getting (this will also make tech support easier for Apple). There's no mic port, and it obviously needs one (though I'll get my sister an iSight anyhow). Finally, the 80GB hard disk has to be improved to 5400 RPMs. You already have to upgrade the memory... getting a junk HD is unacceptable.

Of course, I'd love to see more RAM, a 128MB core video capable video chip, a 7200 RPM disk, more USB/FW ports, and a partridge in a pear tree, but those aren't necessary. I want my sister to get into the Mac line, but if they can't provide a basic functioning and future-capable system soon I'm going to have to get her a Dell. This is why it took me almost a year to get an iMac... the original G5 line was unacceptable.

And another thing- if Logitech won't make Apple mouse drivers themselves then Apply had darn well better include them in the OS. After just a month, I'm already sick and tired of the latest and greatest mice working poorly on my Mac. I can see already that my sister's MX Duo will only cause pain with the Mini.

Well put, ejl. I totally agree. I want a Mini, but it needs some serious improvements. I wish the PM would come down in price. I already have a monitor, keyboard and mouse. All I need is a Mac.

back to basics

So, lets get back to the basic question. When do you think the upgrades will come out? When will the Graphics Card be 64MB and when will the hard drive be upgraded to 5400rpms. More USB ports and a G5 processor?

How long will you wait for the upgrade before you decide to purchase a mac?
Untill Apple Expo on September 20th, that's too far away??

eMac update time - 1 year
iBook update time - looking more and more like it will be nearly 1 year
Mac mini update time probably 1 year too - so update in January 2006
