C'mon. You can't even say that OS X is a viable platform yet. It's this stupid waiting game for one thing to be ready or another! I can't even sync up my Palm in OSX (okay, so I can use the public beta if I want, but I can't sync with Entourage yet!). So what am I supposed to do? Just keep waiting for everyone to catch up, or switch back to OS 9? I'm awfully tempted. After Effects doesn't have many plugins carbonized, Photoshop isn't shipping (yeah yeah they're "finished"—I'll believe it when I have it in my hands), Quark's ages away from even caring, Quicktime needs some serious adjustments and additions, font handling in X is HORRIBLE, iPhoto stores THREE versions of my picture (an original, one in the library, a thumbnail) AND a file to link them. Pretty inefficient. You think I have nothing better to do with the 20 gigs on my cube?

Grrrrrrrrrr.......

Am I wrong in feeling this frustration?

I am assuming that you knew of the OSX limitations when you jumped on board. If you don't think that it is ready, use OS9. Everytime I work under 9 for any amount of time I start to miss X and can't wait to reboot under it. You have the choice. You don't need to be frustrated, use 9, it's a complete OS. Many people, like myself, just enjoy the future of the mac platform but while the future is here today, it's not as mature as an OS with 18 years of development behind it.

Accept it for what it is and decide which you prefer. The beauty of having X is that you can use either. As for 10.1 upgrade, it was FREE! There has not been an upgrade charge for X yet.

What adjustments do you foresee for Quicktime?

Since OS X is actually a BRAND NEW OS..., it will have some growing pains.

Hey, that's great! Thanks for the info on Palm. I'll certainly dl that in a minute or two. Maybe we'll be seeing Entoutage support soon. Quicktime? Well, maybe being able to play more formats, and having some new codecs embedded. Stuff like that.

As far as growing pains go, I'd settle for a little less pain, and a little more growing.

I would also like more codecs for quicktime so I can exclusively use After Effects 5.5 under OSX, but it's third party developers who make them, not apple.

Hmmm....

Anyway one pleasure in ten is to start up IE Mozilla Snax, check your email watch a video all at once. In those short few seconds you feel like you are really getting the most out of the system. It does take some time to learn that you do not have to wait for a program to open up to do something else, mouse clicks do not stop the system, and it does not crash.

I was nervouse about the system structure and the location of preferences and extentions but it turns out you do not really ever have to deal with them.

10.2

I honestly cannot wait for the release of 10.2....hoping, of course, it brings some significant speed improvements. I switched startup partitions from 9 to X about 5 months ago and for the most part I haven't missed much while working on my TiBook.

Last night, however, I did run into a wall while attempting to do some real work in Freehand 10 while under X. First problem was...font management (ATM isn't available for X)....and the second problem was how damned slow it ran when compared to what I get in 9. I got so frustrated waiting for things to happen that I quit working and decided if I have anything that can get done in a timely manner...I'm going to do it in 9 for how. Oh...and my third was the fact that I can't scan anything yet. None of the apps out there will do anything with my HP scanner. :-(

sorry for getting a bit off topic here....but the point is I hope 10.2 improves for 10.1.4's lacking...

I use Powercadd (engsw.com) it is a Cadd based (vector) based program for architectural design and implementing construction documents, it is painfully slow in OS X, and for me to actually draft, I must reboot into OS 9, perhaps this is the prob. these vector based graphic programs (flash 5 also) just run slow as christmas. flash mx however is awesome. while photoshop 5 is bitmap (right? its certainly not vector based) so with this, it runs just swell in OSX (though 6 is better)

as far as scanners go, they all need help in OSX, I just want cd catogarizing from sherlock and Ill be happy.

hey big. in my 10.2 wishlist where i have my huge list of osx bugs id like to see fixed and new featured id like to see implemented some people mentioned they dont like sherlock in osx. i dont use sherlock (in 9 or 10) so its hard for me to crtisize or come up with ideas for how to fix it but it sounds like you use it. what do you think and do you have any ideas for improving it? any bugs?

Would be nice, but I won't hold my breath...

why can quicktime6 not play avi, windows media, divx, etc... it should just play them all. that would be a killer app. then allow us more editing capabilities like copy a picture when on pause (though I guess there is Imovie for that)
