Great, I go take a shower, then when I get back I find that I've missed all the action :(

All the action? Does that mean you had been waiting to take a shower since the last system update? ;-)

I had that symbolic link thing in my sbin directory. Didn't delete it, went ahead and installed 10.3.3. No problems so far!

Computers on the network do seem to be showing up faster now... but I'm still not convinced. When I get to my own lab where I know all the computers on my network, I'll know if it really has been improved (in my case, at least).

Great, now all I need is my Mac back from repair :rolleyes: Even so, if I did have it here, I'd hold off for a while. Good luck to those taking the plunge, be sure to report back! :D

Just installed it. Bare minimum SMB support is mass improved, so I'm very happy.

UPS Support

"A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) panel is available in Energy Saver preferences, as well as a UPS menu bar item, when a UPS power management system is connected to the computer. Overall support for UPS systems is improved."

I saw this listed in the update. Is there a list of Apple supported UPS systems? Also, do you still need to install the UPS drivers with this support or does MacOS X automatically supply drivers? If anyone knows, please post. :cool:

Can´t wait to test out the fontbook improvements. If this fixes the bug causing my problems I will finally be able to install all my fonts without Suitcase:

"Addresses issues that may cause Address Book and other applications to unexpectedly quit if the Classic Mac OS fonts are disabled in Font Book."

In earlier version of Font Book(10.3 betas), you were able to use networking fonts. I wish they would put it back in, as well as the auto-activation...

Font Book seems to zip by, after the update.

I'm still seeing no change - ie, I'm expecting with this update to be able to browse the network for SMB servers... but when I go to the Network area on the sidebar, I still get the same useless three folders - Library, Applications, and Users.

Was I wrong to be under the impression that the SMB fixes included the ability to browse the network for SMB servers?

UT2004 will run great and very smooth on 1 Ghz PB!

New drivers, but doesn't help playability of UT2k4 on a powerbook 1ghz 12", it is still unplayable.. ohh well.. Powerbooks aren't gaming machines anyways..

Believe me, there is a BIG bug in the UT2004 Demo. On Single Processor Macs it runs with maximum the half frame rate, try this:

Open home/library/application support/unreal tournament2004/System/

and edit the UT2004.ini file just with Textedit.

Change:
Channels=6
CacheSizeMegs=32 (your VideoRAMsize)
VARSize= 32 (again)

at OpenGL (not Direct3D ;-):
LevelOfAnisotropy=0

and if you want:
Use16BitTextures=True

These was just small tweaking! Now to work around the bug you MUST turn off audio, to get 2 or 3 times the frame-rate as before (indoor runs very smooth now on my 800Mhz iMacG4, all effects, high resolution, etc.)

THIS IS IMPORTANT (ONLY single-CPU Macs!:
The same file as before:
Open home/library/application support/unreal tournament2004/System/UT2004.ini

UseSound=False

At the Engine.GameEngine!

This is extremely important, turning off the sound works around the bug UT2004 has with single CPU machines. It runs at least twice as fast then. You will see it, now even the menu runs smooth :)

PowerBook 12" 867 MHz

After 10.3.2, my PB's fan was always active. I used a little program called silentnight or something like that to stop it from blowing (reversed apple's new cooling seetings)

10.3.3. put me back on this one. The darn thing is blowing again... REALLY ANNOYING!

EDIT:
Everything is much snappier, though. For my PB 12" rev A, this was a real powerboost.

Has anyone installed 10.3.3 after performing the following under 10.3.2: sudo ln -s /System/Library/Extensions/BootCache.kext/Contents/Resources/BootCacheControl /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl

That was the way to speed up startup time after 10.3.2 caused it to slow down on some machines. I am wondering if there is any reason to remove the symbolic link (that is created by performing the above action) before installing 10.3.3.

Well I had put the symbolic link instead of copying the actual file and start-up was now a bit slower than before, but that could also be due to a first time start-up. I am repairing permissions now and will then start-up again, but so far I have not encountered any problems at all.

I'm not complaining...

I've got a tried and true 400 mhz Pismo running OS X.3. :p

I never complain about things... jsut want to tell everybody how proud of my little white box (eMac) I am ...oh BTW, 10.3.3 installed, something looks better but i dont know exactly what it is... maybe the peace of having the ever-expected update... ;) ... This baby will alway rock!

The first startup after updating was slow. The second time was as expected.

I'd REALLY like to not have to authenticate every damn time I connect to an smb server.

Someone name one product release immediately preceded by an OS update. The updates are usually released WITH the machine. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it, I just think we would have had some details. Right now the rumor mills are as dry as dust.

funny...

It's funny how people work in the Powerbook G5 into every rumor that comes up. Funny, funny funny!

I reversed that BootCache tip by removing the link:

sudo rm /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl

...which seemed to work just fine. The 10.3.3 installer created a file there (doesn't look like a symlink, though), and after a couple of restarts the time is exactly the same as with the "hack" under 10.3.2. Nice.

As for Networking: Woo-hoo! It finallly works like it should, and mounts browsed volumes on the desktop and in the finder sidebar like it should. Happiness!

One minor glitch, may or may not be indicitave of a problem: I first mounted an AFP share. Worked great. Then I tried to mount a couple of SMB shares, but neither showed up anywhere, and it said it "couldn't find the item" if I tried to connect again. The two mounts did show up in /Volumes though. The Finder seemed to be sluggish at that point, too.

...But, after I disconnected from the AFP share, the two SMB volumes immediately appeared on the Desktop as expected, and work fine (Finder also back to normal). I reconnected to the AFP share after that, and no problems there, either, so maybe it was just some sort of caching issue since I'd just started up. Time and more testing will tell.

All around, though, I'm a happy camper that Apple's getting 10.3 good and cleaned up.

Keychain still doesn't work connecting to the Windows servers here. it may be that IT somehow disabled that on the server.

So anyhow, I'm going to stick with using this format:
smb://username@server.company.com/sharename

in Connect to Server since keychain seems to work that way.

We used to have the same problem with the Macs at our office when connecting to our fileservers (Linux machines running Samba). We solved it very easily by simply adding aliases on the servers for the usernames of Mac clients. Apparently, if the remote username doesn't match the user you're logged into your Mac as, Keychain ignores your saved credentials.

As an example, Bob Smith logs into his Mac as bobsmith, but his username on the fileserver is bsmith. By adding the alias on the server for bobsmith -> bsmith, Bob's Keychain stored credentials started working without a problem (since he now logged into the server as bobsmith; same as on his local machine).

With Samba under Linux, this is a cinch to do. Just add the alias entry to /etc/samba/smbusers (format is "bsmith = bobsmith"). Not sure how to do it with a Windows server, since we don't run any of those here, but I'm sure there's a way to do it. Of course, if you don't have any control or influence over the administration of your Windows servers, this may not be a workable solution.

What's with the negative ratings?

I've now downloaded and installed this on three machines (1.8GHz G5, 667 MHz TiBook, and a 350 MHz G4) without any problems. As far as I've seen, no one else has had any problems either (apart from the first reboot taking a little longer, which is perfectly normal). So who, but the most egregious of Wintel Trolls, would rate this negatively?

Cheers.

Is this common on the 12" PB? On both my Pismo 500 and Aluminum PB 1.25 the fan almost never comes on.
