Just a thought, over the last three years (i.e. with Puma, Jaguar and Panther) the point updates (10.x.x) came pretty much every two month (not counting 10.2.7), there are deviations like 10.3.1 (one month) and now 10.3.5 (three months) but the average is pretty much exactly two months.

At this rate we are going to have 10.3.9 next April, which would be just in time to release 10.4 in May or June. But if they have to do something like 10.2.7 or 10.3.1 (which fixed the urgent firewire and FileVault problems) they might run out of numbers. :D

no they don't, at least not very likely (as that would require a version number larger than ten-dot-three-dot-2^32). they can have for example panther version 10.3.999999 if they like, but that too is not very likely. you might however have quite a good guess in 10.3.9 being the last panther version, but there's no reason why there couldn't be a 10.3.10 release.

(i think tiger will be around even longer than panther, so we might see a +10 minor version number with that cat.)

You should be repairing your permissions BEFORE and AFTER you do any kind of OS Update. This is why you probably experienced so many repairs. Not repairing permissions before you apply the update is the reason a lot of people experience trouble after applying the update. Then of course, the idiots blame Apple when it was the users fault!

But, I did repair my permissions directly after I installed iPhoto 4.0.3. which was the day before yesterday. Everything was fine then. The system seems to be running just fine so far. It was just weird that every single .plisy file had the incorrect permissions. Which update did all of you other 15" 1.25GHz PowerBook owners get?

"Mac OS 10.3.5 has a number of interesting items in it, but one of the most interesting is the built-in Bluetooth Remote Control functionality. Users of Salling Clicker and other applications have been enjoying the cool factor and useful aspects of having a mobile phone act as a remote control as well as other cool tricks."

Bluetooth File Exchange finally works seamlessly with my Sony Ericsson K700i - including the clever little Remote Control functionality - :)

However iSync still doesn't see the phone - :(

is this a new portion of the apple site? found it linked from the main page with a main 'Motion' graphic

[edit: store is up; looks like 'new' = Motion, Production Suite, ultra portable audio and a new 'search' ... look for the green new buttons

You definitely SHOULDN'T have to repair permissions before and after every update. Repairing permissions once in a while should help avoid problems; while updates may change some minor permissions, unless it's an OS update, it's not really going to cause ANY problems for most people.

I repair permissions about once a month or less, and I usually install updates almost as soon as they come out. Even with the original 10.2.8, I've NEVER had update problems...

Nice rearrangement of the deck chairs...

I guess I was too excited with the x.5 update last night that there would be new hardware... (Not that I'm in the market; see below!)

10.3.5 required

Looks like 10.3.5 is required for Motion. I guess there were significant upgrades under the skin in order to support this new App.

Hehe maybe I should take your post as a sign...I'm downloading Win XP SP2 from Microsoft's TechNet site as I write this. Maybe I should wait a while

*waves him off waves him off* ABORT ABORT ABORT!!

Seriously. MS did some major under the hood tweaking of XP's security. Enough so that it WILL, not might but will, break some applications. I'm dead serious when I say hold off for at least a week on that update. MS did a lot of work on it to make it stable and I've run RC's successfully but its still a major update.

You are naturally right. I would find it simply a bit awkward, having 10.3.1 as well as 10.3.10. I can't remember having seen any software with a version number like this (x.10).

one possible solution would be to add a specialized service that tracks "hours of use" and runs such scripts after the system has been used X hours - this of course would likely confuse user because the maintenance script would almost certainly be run just when the user has more important work to do

Simple solution..... Use the same method MS uses for its task sched...see below.

Does anyone know if this update adds support for Dual Layer DVD-Rs in OSX?

currently the OSX finder does not recognize the Dual Layer DVD-R format.

Its a problem with the Dual Layer format. Dual Layer DVDs (the ones you burn, not commercial ones) are not compatable in todays DVD-R drives. This will eventually be solved in a firmware update.

Locked Up Finder

Attached my mini USB2.0 drive. Read from it fine, but when I attempted to eject, it locked up Finder. Could not relaunch, had to reboot. Recreated this 2X.

This worked fine in 10.3.4. :(

Installed 10.3.5 at work

After staying up all night testing on my home network, I installed 10.3.5 on the 5 Macs at my job (3 quicksilvers 1ghz and 2 g5 1.6ghz). We always had problems accessing our London PeeCee server from New York. It was soooooo sloooow. Now connection and file transfers are as fast as the XP dells in the company! Especially in Dreamweaver.

Thanx Apple :D

This already exists - it's part of Unix. There's a daemon called "cron" which watches time (to the second, I think) and can run scripts/commands.

The OS actually uses it to run maintenance scripts if your computer is awake overnight.

I didn't see what your post is referring to ("one possible solution..."), but I'm sure cron can handle it. All you have to do is open up a file (/etc/crontab) with root permissions in a text editor and you can tell to run a script/command every week at this hour, every day at this hour and minute, or whatever else you wish.

My GE mini optical mouse still doesnt work :(

little round one with two black buttons for eyes? with a retractable cord?

works fine for me (and has worked fine since 10.2) but i've gone through 3. apparently the buttons break very easily.

Something else must have happened then -- I did the exact same thing on my powerbook. Ran repair permissions right after installing iPhoto 4.0.3, then yesterday installed 10.3.5 and repaired again. This time there was nothing to fix (well aside from cd9660 or whatever it's called; that's never worked since the security fix for it).
