installing now :)

i always get hopeful when i see graphics drivers, cause i keep hoping they'll up my speeds in Motion given that so much is dependent on the GPU

well, time to restart and find out!

Volume?

I just installed the OS X 10.3.6 update on a Dual 1 GHz MDD Power Mac G4. Before the install, I had my system volume at 50%, with iTunes at 100%. After restarting, I noticed that suddenly my Adium sounds were louder than usual. Then I noticed that iTunes seemed to be playing considerably louder than before, even though the volume settings were the same. I tried playing around with the volume (both iTunes and system) but it still seems to be louder than before. (I didn't touch the speakers either.) Has anyone else experienced this?

(Besides that, everything seems to be the same or slightly improved... Calculator's floating-point operation errors are fixed, and Safari seems *slightly* faster, but I've experienced one beachball since the update)

yay, i think this fixes the safari problems so many people were having, including myself

About the volume, what kind of system do you have? I know that earlier builds of 10.3.6 (I think 7R9) had audio issues with my PM G5 (the system audio control couldn't control the back audio port), but they fixed it in later builds. Interesting though.

You gave me an idea by that comment... I unplugged my speakers from the rear audio port and plugged them back in, and the volume suddenly set itself to 10/16 (blocks), up from 8/16 which was the previous setting. The volume is back to normal now! Odd..

Very odd. Anyone else having this issue and resolving it the same way?

Just updated, no problems here so far!

Thx Apple!

Weirdness in Software Update

The first time I opened Software Update, it showed the 10.3.6 release, but at only 14 Mbytes. Strange I thought, the rumors put this at around 34M. I proceeded and after it was done, I got this error message indicating a failure because the package didn't have sufficient contents. A second try yielded the same result.
So, closing and restarting Software Update, now produces a 10.3.6 update at 34.6M. Why would the first time be incorrect??? Strange..
It's loading now. . . .

As well as displaying trivial floating point errors, Calculator could go badly wrong if converting between very small and very large units, (for example square inches to acres).

12000000 square inches now converts to 1.9130671416 acres. This is a lot closer than the old calculator which gave 1.44. According to Mathematica the answer is 1.9130700948882767065

Mine also showed 14 MB, but I haven't installed 10.3.6 yet. Relaunching Software Update, and it's still 14 MB. I think I'll wait a while before installing.

Dark Display Fix

I'm happy to see Apple addressed the issue of a portable's display not lighting up when coming back from display sleep. (This only happens if you have a screensaver password set.) It was really getting annoying and I would have to type my password blindly and hit enter before the backlight would activate.

THANKS APPLE! :D

Any idea whether this update adds a feature? Fixes something?

It fixes a lot of little things, go look on Apple's OSX support site. It lists everything this update contains.

Just read the linked articles, the update size depends on your computer/configuration.

This is a very odd time for an update: late on a Friday. This is the time companies usually use for press releases they don't want to make, to let the bad reactions die down over the weekend. I doubt Apple is doing such a thing here; they probably issued it when it was ready, and this time it just happened to be at the end of a day at the end of a week!

I agree. We have a rule at work, no new programming goes into effect on a Friday lest it break something or cause major problems.

I'm sure plenty of testing was done here though.
