Formated my iBook and did a clean install of panther. 10.3.6 installed and runs fine now. Must have not worked the first time from some of my system mods and files I removed.

I didn't read all the posts here, but since I installed the update, my logitech two button usb mouse won't work and every time I put my g5 to sleep it wakes up again immediately. this reminds me of when I was a windows user. wtf?!?!?!

No problems here on 2 PowerBooks. Permissions repair just fixed the cd9660 thing it always does (why don't they take care of that?).

G5 Crashed

My install got to about 80 percent and crashed. Hold power button for 5 seconds in all the lanquages. Rebooted and it said i had the new version.
should i worry about it?

I think there were two of those that arrived in 10.2 and took until 10.2.6 to fix, so it might be a while with the cd9660.util file. As long as the CD-ROM file system works, I'm fine with it showing up each time.

ive no idea what that cd9660 thing is, can you shed any light for me?

Yes, I have exactly the same problem with an iMac G5. You put the computer into a sleep state, it shuts down, everything goes quiet for a second then it springs back to life.

Any work arounds?

Maybe I should knock on wood...

How come I never have any problems when I update my little G3 600Mhz?

All of a sudden, the amount of negative feedback soared. Funny that.

Actually, before I updated today, I was noticing a ripple effect for the first time and though the CRT was going bad. I guess that the last update was pretty crappy, but I was in the process of moving and did not use the computer much.

All of these problems seem isolated to G5s, any MacRumor regulars having the same problems with their G5s? Just curious, I figured my close to being obsolete G3 would be the one having problems.

Well, at least Safari is snappy again, I was beginning to wonder. At this point, I start questioning whether or not I have held out too long before buying a new Apple. But then an update comes along and makes everything run well.

P.S.

My Logitech MX 700 Mouse and Logitech Wireless Keyboard are working just fine. Would the processor involved make a difference?

If the reports are to be believed I am a little baffled, can the speed of the chip really influence the operating system?

How does having a G3, G4 or G5 make any difference to the OS? is the update different depending on what chip you have?

I always wondered what the heck this thing was

I just installed the OS X 10.3.6 update on a Dual 1 GHz MDD Power Mac G4. Before the install, I had my system volume at 50%, with iTunes at 100%. After restarting, I noticed that suddenly my Adium sounds were louder than usual. Then I noticed that iTunes seemed to be playing considerably louder than before, even though the volume settings were the same. I tried playing around with the volume (both iTunes and system) but it still seems to be louder than before. (I didn't touch the speakers either.) Has anyone else experienced this?

(Besides that, everything seems to be the same or slightly improved... Calculator's floating-point operation errors are fixed, and Safari seems *slightly* faster, but I've experienced one beachball since the update)

I too have an MDD G4 tower (Dual 867Mhz) and updated to OS X 10.3.6 and am experiencing the louder sound as well. My volume was set to 10/16 and it sounded louder than the way it was in OS X 10.3.5. When I put it to sleep and wake it I checked my sound and it set to near max! and I had to lower it back to the sound back to 10/16. Is this a sound bug with OS X 10.3.6 and MDD towers?

If you read the knowledgebase article for the update, you'll see that as one of the fixes in this version.

However, I've never understood the fascination with the 'list of users', particularly for network users. What's wrong with using the two-field username/password interface rather than the list-of-users?
Trust me on this - when you are dealing with 300 art students and staff its a LOT simpler. We are talking about people who don't understand the concept of user accounts and can't understand that if there is no account, then they cannot login. "But I typed my name!"

As for staff - I kid you not when I tell you that we have them INSIST things like the computer is "faster" when not connected to the network and demanding a computer be standalone, and when we have granted this request and disconnected it from the network ten minutes later they complain that "the Internet isnt working" and "we cant print over the network".

I really am not joking here.

As for it mentioning the list of login name and crash fix in the read me - no it doesn't - it only says it "makes it easier to scroll through a long list of user names in the login window."

That could mean anything.

Fixes on Airport Issues?

Hi All,

I had major problems with my PB 12 1 Ghz connecting to my Linksys basestation in 10.3.5. Would not re-establish a working IP using DHCP after waking from sleep. Had to back install to 10.3.4. To quote from the macfixit entry (http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20040915081217505):

====

"AirPort intermittent connections A number of readers have reported isssues with intermittent AirPort reception since installing the 10.3.5 Update. Reader Tim Bonnici writes about his experiences:

"I would like to add my voice to the chorus of those experiencing Airport dropouts since updating 10.3.5. Previously the network had worked flawlessly. [Now] at times the only way to get the Airport network back up again is to do a hard reset of the base station. Drop outs happen with no discernable pattern. Sometime sthings can work fine for days and at other times the network disappears every 10 seconds."

====

Anybody seen these problems resolve with 10.3.6? Really nervous about updating from 10.3.4 before I know whether this is gone.

Thanks,

Ted

Massive improvement over 10.3.5

Both of my systems have been running like total dogs since 10.3.5. It's the first time I've had to beat on my desk in a screaming fit since buying them 2 years ago. Here's to hoping 10.3.6 fixes that.

Absolutely! 10.3.5 was extremely slow.... and for some reason meant that many of my apps were consuming huge amounts of memory... They seem to be back to using what they were under 10.3.4, which is great....

/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util is a program that had a buffer overflow problem late last year. This would not be so bad except the original was SUID root meaning that no matter who executes it, it runs as root. This is a VERY Bad Idea especially with a program that has a buffer overflow.

They fixed the file and the permissions, however didn't tell the permission repair process which will always try to put the permissions back to SUID root. This is why you get the warning when doing a permissions repair.

You can tell if it's SUID root by doing an ls -l

# ls -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 20436 15 Sep 00:51 cd9660.util

Thats what it should look like. If it's SUID root it will look like this:

-rwsr-xr-x 1 root wheel 20436 15 Sep 00:51 cd9660.util

to clear the SUID bit, use

sudo chmod 755 cd9660.util

hopefully this will fix the weird display bug... sometimes i'll be scrolling in Safari, and then everything gets jumbled up, and i have to highlight it to fix it. :/

I installed it without any problems, thankfully.

One minor thing still bugs me though and that is that the calculator still cannot edit the results display, which is a real pain.
For example:

If you perform the following calculation: 250 * 3000

On a Windows XP calculator the result is displayed as: 750,000

On OS X calculator the result is displayed as: 750000 ie WITHOUT the comma. When the results are really large numbers its a flippin pain looking at the string of digits and mentally editing them.

It seems such a simple enhancement to make, I can't understand why its not been done.

But apart from that admittedly minor issue I'm fine.

Audio: Volume+ Quality-

Hardware Config:

MDD DP 1.25 GHz G4 Tower
10.3.6 and all updates, permissions repaired
no third party audio hardware

Description:

After updating, audio volume was increased, and quality was decreased.

Hypothesis:

I looked on the Apple Discussions and someone with the same problem said that they fixed this problem by zapping their PRAM.

Solution:

Zapping the PRAM does fix the audio volume/quality problem for me.

ooh its nice to have an update to wake up to!

i hope my external firewire drive works when i restart it now!

wish me luck!

update: well everything seem cool for me!

Despite reading all the bad reports, decided I was a badass and was going to download it anyway...and...apart from a long start up everything is the same as before. So I'm happy, go forth and download.

OpenGL

Hmm still no real change in the OpenGL performance with Cinebench. This is bad news. PC OpenGL-performance is still twice as high as on a G5. Please Apple fix this!
