I too have an MDD G4 tower (Dual 867Mhz) and updated to OS X 10.3.6 and am experiencing the louder sound as well. My volume was set to 10/16 and it sounded louder than the way it was in OS X 10.3.5. When I put it to sleep and wake it I checked my sound and it set to near max! and I had to lower it back to the sound back to 10/16. Is this a sound bug with OS X 10.3.6 and MDD towers?

Mine are also a lot louder

I downloaded and installed this morning and so far there are problems encountered.:)

One thing I want to share tho: Before the update my ibook doesn't go to sleep automatically when it is idle for several hrs, I set the energy settings to sleep in 15mins when using the battery and 20 mins when using power adaptor.

Now it seem to respond to the settings i set in the energy settings... other than that I don't experience any problem so far. :)

Mail duplicating email

Having just downloaded 10.3.6 but not having restarted yet, i looked down to mail only to see 28 new emails flashing. Upon opening mail i found that all of these emails were ones that had been previously sent to me but had now been recieved again! Not just in my .mac account but also in my company email. Anyone else had this?

i'm little disappointed

there is no more hint to a pb g5 in the "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleMacRISC4PE.kext/Contents/Info.plist", are they simply avoiding speculation, or is there really no pb g5 coming out in jannuary?? wähäää :( :(

Just read the linked articles, the update size depends on your computer/configuration.
How do you get you system to show the 14M? I have DSL, but it is a "lite" version (This is the only broadband in my area and needless to say, consumers are being taken advantage of).
Am I correct to assume that the package is more compressed or zipped in some fashion? Am I also correct in that it would take less time to dl if it is in the 14 meg format instead of 34?

Thanks!

Never mind, stupid me, should have read the KB before i posted :p

Man, are we all serious about powerbook G5 being so soon?? Can't we all see the heat problems they encounter with even iMac G5?? I've read about 50 peoples only on this forum, who bought an iMac G5 and had weird sounds coming out of fans and problems with mainboard and etc...

Plus, look at the market.. I cant really see a 64bit PC notebook yet in anywhere.. even if there is a model that I could not recognized yet, I'm sure its not in the 1699$ price range..

I'm not expecting anything until Tiger comes out, which most of you say late-winter for release.. its not that I dont want, I'd LOVE TO, but it is that I dont see it feasible.. :(

That's because Panther will never run on a PB G5, they will come with Tiger pre-installed.

Yeah, software updates are cool, but Calculator?

There is actually a bug in the swiss german version of calculator. the period (.) in the numeric keypad isn't recognised. you have to use the comma (,) on the main keyboard to get it. Very annoying if you want to type quickly.

I actually told someone from Apple Support, who I know from iChat, about it.

Haven't installed 10.3.6 yet but I'm wondering if it is fixed now...

iMac G5 crash on reboot

On installing OS X 10.3.6 via software update on my iMac G5 1.8 GHz (17") I selected reboot, the Mac started to shut down, then the desktop wallpaper reappeared tiled and corrupted, with the dock but not top bar, the mouse pointer still worked, nothing would launch and I could not bring up the force quit menu.

On power down (via power button) the iMac restarted OK and 10.3.6 was running.

My iMac is a couple of days old, and had only had iTunes 4.7, Quicktime 6.5.2 and security updates installed on it via software update.

I have also installed on my PowerMac Dual 1.25 GHz (FW800) with no problems.

The real deal on cd9660.util and Disk Utility

No problems here on 2 PowerBooks. Permissions repair just fixed the cd9660 thing it always does (why don't they take care of that?).
That's a feature, not a bug.

If we look at the file before running the permissions repair, we see:
Code:
$ ls -l /System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 20436 5 Nov 17:15 /System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util
The -rwxr-xr-x in octal is 0755.

Running the permissions repair, we are told:
Code:
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261
Converting 33261 to octal, we get 0100755. That's really the same thing as 0755; the additional 1 in there is just a more verbose form showing us that this is a regular file (as opposed to, say, a fifo, device or symlink). [see S_IFREG in /usr/include/sys/stat.h]

Performing the ls -l after running the permissions repair will confirm that the file's permissions have not changed.

In other words, Disk Utility is just making extra sure that cd9660.util has the correct permissions by forcing the issue rather than doing it conditionally.

iSight unmouts when you try to use it

If I try to use my iSight with iChat or Skype as soon and one of those programs try's to access it, it disappears from system preferences.

I have to unplug to get it back again.

Firewire issue with 10.3.6??

no problems on iBooks and PB

installed on 2 x iBook G4 12" 800's, 1 x iBook G4 14" 1.2GHz, 1 x PB Al G4 15" 1.5GHz.

No problems on any system. External firewire 400 drives mount ok. AFP ok. Safari ok. Airport network ok.

No Problems Here...

I've installed 10.3.6 on the following machines with NO problems:

Powermac G4-400 (with G4-800 upgrade card), 1.5 MB, ATI 8500 video card, aftermarket 4-port PCI USB card, Macally keyboard, logitech mouse.

Titanium Powerbook G4-400 (first generation), 384 MB, PCI Wireless Card.

15" Flat Panel iMac G4-800, 512 MB.

iMac G3-350, 512 MB.

All machines were already upgraded to 10.3.5 and were fully up to date with all other updates, including Quicktime and iTunes. All updates went flawlessly. Everything tested and operational afterwards. Safari is faster (at least on my upgraded Powermac). Until this update, Safari was giving me serious heartburn with stalling all the time and getting frequent beach balls. This latest update has cured the problem! Way to go Apple!!!

Safari..

Once again I plead for someone to please send me the Safari 1.2.4 application itself to me. I am unable to get my 1.2 version to update, because I had 1.3 previously which is now not compatible with 10.3.6.
No one since page 3 seems to care..I thought this was a kind mac community..I dont really have anywhere else to turn..Thank you for anyone who actually listens.

Please send it to aeroguy242@yahoo.com or darkelipse04@netzero.com

Thanks anyone..

I'm surprised how many people have experienced problems with this update. My machine seems to be running fine since I did the update last night - 1.25 GHz G4 17" iMac...

My powerbook is running fine after the 10.3.6 installation.
I've benchmarked ut2003 berfore and after and i got a +5% increase in framerates (i know thats within margins of error).

I haven't tried it on my sawtooth yet, i would probably do it within the next days.

ok, this discussion around g5 pb is not new and sure its not really necessary, and it will also cost then about eur/dollar 3.000,-, maybe i'm too naive, but i expext one, guess they are planing also since the first steps of a the g5, long time ago, nobody also did believe in a g4 pb that early, and of course apple wants to have the "wahhh-effect", "they did it again", like they really did in the past several times, and i'm asking myself, is it really such a problem to adapt the 970fx in power consumption with the cooperation of ibm, has it to be a 1.8 ghz pb?, i just say: "its time now", at least i wish so, anyway sometime it will happen ... :D :D

I'm always intrigued by the large amount of people with weird problems. I wonder if these are people who never repair permissions, have tons of mods and hacks, or install every demo and piece of freeware they can find? Then once an update comes along and shuffles things around they get these problems.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Before updates 1) Make shure you dont have any weird hacks running. 2) Repair disk permissions 3) If you have a particularly picky machine, restart and then run Software Update all by itself.

It's not that I don't belive that some have issues, but I've never had a problem with any update and constantly see so many have problems with every update.

May your Macs live long and prosper :D

Volume Problem Doesn't Go Away

SpaceMagic said:
Mine are also a lot louder

I've realized that every time I restart my machine, the volume gets messed up again. We obviously shouldn't need to unplug and re-plug our speakers every time we start up. :p Any ideas on a fix? I'm going to contact Apple about it.

Also, my Mac has no weird hacks, I do repair permissions, and this is the first time I've experienced problems after an upgrade. There seems to be a consensus that this volume problem only happens among MDD Power Macs, so I'm sure it can't just be me.

makes me feel good about selling my mdd... the temp yosemite i got doesnt have the sound problem! hehe but runs at 1/10 of waht the mdd did... anyways.. no problems so far
