Yes I'm hitting the right keys, and I checked, and the keyboard shortcuts are working. Wow, this is weird. All I get is a beep when I try...

So are all the G5 fan issues due to x800 video cards and nothing else?

No, the fan issues have nothing to do with the x800 cards. I have and many others have the GeForce FX 5200 ultra cards and have the same problems.
Just FYI

a bit premature

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, I'm not sure what the problem might be. All I know is that my 1.25 GHz G4 iMac is perfectly fine, if not faster, after the update, so I doubt it's a G4 issue. (And yes, I know the whole "faster" thing is more psychological than anything... ;))

Well I think I was a little hasty in this post. But I will maintain this being my first concern from an update and it will make me more cautious. Like in Windoze updates, specially service packs, I will now wait 6 months until I upgrade those, to get as much information as possible in regard to how it will affect me. With OSX updates I will wait around a month.

The issue with one of the iMacs was with a game "Pengapop" that my partner has been playing. I ran the update again and there has been no trouble.

The othe iMac absolutley ground to an halt, I'm suspecting it was aquisition. I will run the update again and see if that relieves it.

With the G5 (1.6GHz, 768RAM) no issues at all, better than that, noticeable speed increases (wish I had 2GIG RAM though).

The cube has also benefited, which i find interesting, as it is running a pc ATI card with the MAC ROM force fed.

Haven't upgraded the PBG3bronze though.

With regard to file permission errors; is it normal practise to run the fix permissions, or should i be running that regularly? Don't have much knowledge in that area.

Problems on iBook G4 1.33GHz

Problem on iBook G4 1.33GHz

After installing the update, I hear a weird 1-2 second humming sound every time I turn on my computer. It sounds like something is spinning super fast, like a fan or the harddrive. As a matter of fact, this is probably the loudest sound my iBook has ever made.

Does anyone else have the same problem?? Is this a common problem? I also installed MenuMeters a little while back (free memory, network, harddrive, and processor system preference options from MacUpdate.com), but I doubt it has anything to do with this.

My specs: newest generation 14 inch iBook G4 1.33GHz (bought it in november), 1.256 RAM, etc.

I don't see any signifigant differences, once I rebooted the Finder seemed to load slowly, but now it's back to normal.

Well, here I am back on 10.3.7, and it's not annoying to have my computer on, again. Fan problem fixed. I don't think ATI will or even can fix this problem, since re-installing the X800 drivers over 10.3.8 did nothing...only going back to 10.3.7 worked. So I'll be filing a polite bug report to Apple (though it's not really a bug, is it...more like a misfeature).
I played around some more and found that not only does my x800 make more noise but it looks like I have the universal fan noise problem as well. Double jepoardy! So a complete re-install of Panther seems to be in my future once I return from a business trip this week.

I also filed a bug report w/ Apple and opened a ticket with ATI. ATI's solution was to send me a very generic "Mac FAQ" e-mail to solve the problem.

Now the screenshot stuff works again. I haven't restarted or anything. It just works. Weird.

Works for me, my mac's fans are much quieter now (it was getting annoying with eye tv running in the background all the time, now it's very acceptable) also safari is just as fast as firefox, startup's a little slower though, it's the only negative I have about this update, I've never had an issue with any of the updates so far (fingers crossed)

streaming audio from itunes

Argh! I'm no longer able to detect my airport express from itunes. Neither via airport nor ethernet. The problem occured on both my PB 12" and my PB 17" and on both my airport express.

10.3.8 doing great, with a little help :)

daveL and greenstork

I just thought I'd update you (and anyone else who's curious) that both my PM and my Albook are doing great now. My powerbook's been up 1 day, 17 hours 15 minutes now. A new record I believe.

What did it for me?

Killing the Lexmark X73 driver in the Activity Monitor. After looking around on Apple discussions, I thought that maybe my kernel_task was the problem. I looked at the activity monitor and my %system alone was at 98.99% of usage! I restarted, thinking that could not be a good thing.

I then launched Activity Monitor, and I saw that after maybe an hour or so of relative quiet, the Lexmark driver started to bounce back and forth from almost 0 to 20/30%. I quit it and it's been purring along ever since. I can still print thru my Lexmark X73, so I think it must be the scanner function. I'll have to test that out later.

To test out my theory, I did the same on my PM, things went great. I restarted, left the Lexmark driver going and once again after several hours it was slowed down to almost a complete stop, killed the Lexmark driver (which took quite a while to do, the system was so unresponsive!) and now it's running smoothly the past 9 hours even without a restart.

So anyway, thank you both for your posts, they helped me investigate the problem and figure it out. I will definitely run maintenance tasks regularly now to keep my systems in tip-top shape.

Needless to say, I'm quite happy now with 10.3.8 :D Good luck to everyone else having problems.

Finder Startup Issue

Some of you are having the, "I thought it was only me" issue when the Finder sits there and hangs [menus don't load, no window nav.] but the dock loads fine. Well if you sit there and wait.... it probably will start up just "fine".

It happened with 10.3.7 and 10.3.8 for me. So I would think the update itself is not the problem.

Anyway, I hear there are ways to fix it:

zapping pram, deleteing all user/system cache, fixing permissions and others.

Here's my story [on the boards]

Mail and more screwwed up

Since updating, Mail has not been sending messages, and it has also "lost" a few messages in my inbox and sent messages box. Every few minutes my computer tells me that I have no free disk space. The claim was valid, so I freed up 5oomb and I still get the dialog. Also, a get a box telling me that I have too many apps open and that my HD is out of memory, and I will have to force quit a program. This is not good. Tiger better be coming out soon.

Are you aware of the bug with MacAlly's iShock game controller driver that causes Mac OS X 10.3.8 to run out of disk space extremely quickly? You might be experiencing this issue...

after reading most of the comments i bit the bullet, had the apple helpline number nearby and downloaded. whoaaaaaaa, MAIL is flying.
all else super normal. the speed gain in MAIL is incredible. before it took for ages to send and receive, now it just is very very fast.
so my vote goes for download it, it is worth it.

I am having that exact problem! I deleted the ishock driver, now how do I fix my hard drive? it's completely full except for a a few megs I opened up by deleting some files.

The system.log file is probably the one that's far bigger than it should be (I don't remember where it's located, but I'm sure someone has posted about it earlier in this thread. Delete that one and you should regain a significant portion of disk space (one user on another forum reported a system.log over 16 GB  ).

I would suggest going to your home area and looking through the Library/Logs folder.

Isn't the point of seeds is so developers such as the developer of the iShock can catch these sort of bugs so the unsuspecting public is not burdened with finding these bugs out for themselves; potentially causing a lot of damage? If anything, we should call for a boycott of certain companies that cannot properly test their devices against updated seeds.

You're 100% correct! I agree with your reasoning - boycotting would hopefully convince these companies to test their products better.

Blah, another worthless update. Hasn't fixed the mouse pointer dissapearing which as introduced by 10.3.7. I need to reboot my powerbook every time I switch between a closed lid with external display/mouse/kb and using it open. Not to mention countless Mail bugs not fixed.

I ran Tecb Tools 4 intermediate testing last evening. Disconnected my OWC Mercury external firewire hard drive. Downloaded Mac OS 10.3.8 update. Then I ran Run Repair Permissions. Restart per request and all is well.
