A ha!

So THAT'S what that noise is! I thought my speakers were on the way out... I hope this fixes it!

I wil say the most recent update before this did lower the volume considerably on my MacBook Pro 2.0 GHZ Core Duo.

I stated at 10.4.9 that I was getting the same volume at 4 bars/25% as I was previously at 12 bars/75% volume. I went through the early topics on the update and no one else seemed to be reporting similar issues. When 10.4.10 was released, a lot more reported audio problems from 10.4.9 fixed or problems that weren't previously there created.

The volume level seemed to go back to 10.4.8 levels after the 10 update. I have to say neither time I experienced any problems with popping, but did after updating to 10.4.5, IIRC.

Either way, 10.4.10 v1.1? WTF? First people were shocked to see 10.4.10, now we seem to have a 10.4.10.1? Oh well, as long as these things fix problems without creating more, they can issue updates daily with any numbering scheme they like for all I care.

The best thing about this update is that I won't have to listen to people telling me the pops are "due to some third party application", a "non-standard installation" (whatever that might be) or that they don't exist at all and are just in my head. ;)

It's not 10.4.10.1 its v1.1 of the 10.4.10 update. Apple do this all the time, look on this site for a few v1.1s of secuity updates in the past.

audio update

looks like I now have a decent max volume ... no "pops" either

After installing update and restart I did notice that the bluetooth icon was missing in the menu bar. It was checked (to show up in menu bar) in the systems preference pane. Unchecking and then rechecking the box in the preference pane fixed the problem.....strange

I just ran this update and then restarted. Now my "print & fax" icon in system preferences is messed up. Take a look:

V 1.1 for PPC

Showed up on my G5 iMac. Installed with no problems, although it was only about 3.5 Mb.

EDIT: It was only a security update, but it was an update nevertheless

Close System Preferences and -----> /Library/Caches, pull a file called "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache" to your desktop. Check back in System Preferences. If the problem is fixed, it's safe to delete the pulled file.

Wow, thanks!! That was a quick and easy fix.

Yeah this is great, my intel mac mini was making that damn pop, I have it hooked up as a media center to my 42" sony wega and that crap did not sound good at all, pretty scary in surround sound.

I found a big stupid fix last night that I did not feel like putting together plus it came with a proceed at your own risk statement, I will definitely get this up and running on the mini when I get home.

Macbook 2.0 GHz (May 2007): didn't work

Sorry guys, the update didn't change a thing on my Macbook (May 2007 version).
I can still hear the "pop" everytime the system needs to emit a sound for an action like moving a file to the trash, for example.
Well, it pops. I'm not using external speakers.
The same pop can be heard on the boot sound.
It seems to happen everytime the system is unused for more than 10 seconds, with maximum enery saving or normal settings activated.

Did you notice anything different after the update?

Thank you all,

Luca.

Great! Now they just need to come out with iTunes 7.3 v1.1 so I can actually install it without getting errors saying that my library file could not be saved...

Come on, Apple.

This fixed the related issue I was having on my Mac Pro, where it would shut off the optical out after ten seconds of inactivity.

This caused the first second or so of sound emitted by any app to be cut off, since my receiver takes about that long to notice the optical signal has come on and switch to digital mode for that input.

So, way to go Apple for fixing this!

I never experienced any popping sounds with my MBP, but there is some audio corruption at high volume levels (~75% and above), even after the audio update. I'm not sure if this problem occurred under 10.4.9, as the update 10 .10 was released almost immediately after I had received the computer. The corruption is some variant of distortion, and I initially only recognized it while playing music. I can hear it, even with AIFF files straight from the CD, so I know it's not a music bitrate issue.

I sure hope Apple releases a fix for it, as I have to turn my speakers up to 100% and leave the computer volume around 25%.

I wonder what the mounting and unmounting of usb stuff is? Does this mean I can unplug a usb peripheral without having to eject it? Even windows does this.

No, Windows does not do this. Ever see the "Safely Remove Hardware" dialogues in Windows? You should, because if you don't and remove external drives, you risk corruption just as you do with Macintosh.

Not entirely true. You can enable "Quick Removal" in Windows XP to remove the hardware without going through the "Safely Remove Hardware" procedure. This does reduce the performace speed of the hardware, but does not cause any data damage.

Finally some news that aren't iPh*** related!

I was hearing that poping sound too before the update, it was really annoying..
