mdimport and mds running wild

After the update I also had a slower machine.

Noticed that mds and mdimport (user "nobody") running wild (40% processor).

I think these link to Spotlight. Earlier spotlight bugs time stamped some entries with year 2013 so this version of spotlight couldn't order the entries.

I terminated both mds and mdimport in Activity Monitor. Rebooted.

Now have a smooth running Mac.

Lost the Clock

How do I get my clock back on the desktop? It's gone after 10.4.3 update.

My date and time icon in Preferences is missing!

I installed it...and at first all seemed good. But now I've had it fail to shut down (waited 5 minutes after requesting a shutdown, then had to manually power it down). Another time it failed to wake up from a sleep (screen came up, could move mouse around, but I couldn't click on anything). And now the screen just went black, and I can't get it to come back. The machine is still turned on (I know because I'm currently copying a file to it).

And I only installed it this morning?

I have a powerbook 15", the one before the current version...anyone else having any problems?

Is there a way to roll back the updates (dare I say it) like windows XP can do?

Was having the exact same problems as you before the update. They didn't show up yet since the update. Have the same PB. Strange...

Does anyone have this issue?

After updating our POS computer I notice the percentage button on the calculator no longer works correctly. Instead of adding 55% to the price of something it now just add's .55 to the total...

If you have a solution email me at:
tanukis@bellsouth.net

I haven't updated any other computer since because we need one with a working calculator..

Bad for me...

Downloaded & installed ok, but no internet connectivitiy (despite all looking ok), and major probs with apps not quiting properly - Force quitting doesn't work. So reverting to earlier version for me tonight!

Updating to 10.4.3 from 10.4.2 + all security updates.

I ran the 10.4.3 update from SU and received the 97MB file. During the automated installation it stopped and I received a message that it had been interrupted. I had all applications closed and had just performed a repair permissions. The message said that I could try again from the installation package in the Trash. I pulled the package out and tried again, but the package wouldn't open.

I went to download the Delta package from Apple's website, but Safari would not load. I got to the site using Firefox and downloaded the package. I got to the first screen of the install package but then that package also closed as well.

My next step probably wasn't the best one. I rebooted my machine. I saw the grey Apple screen for about 15 seconds and then a solid blue screen. The solid blue screen stayed and that's where the computer continued to hang. I listened for HD activity but could only hear fans running, so after about 15 minutes I did a hard reboot.

The next time things happened similarly, but in the middle of the blue screen I saw a rectangle box with part of my desktop background and part of the shutdown dialog box that will tell you to push the Shutdown button or wait 2 minutes before it automatically shuts down. Subsequent reboots yielded the same image, once with different colored pixels speckled about the image.

I've been a Mac user for a bit over a year and have never had an issue with an update of any kind. I need to know what my next steps should be. I've got some files backed up, but not all of them -- so the most important thing is that I get all my files saved. If I have to reinstall the OS then I will, but I need the files saved first!

Do I simply boot from the Tiger install disk and the choose to Archive and Install? Is there any hope to repair things as they are now?

The best first step would be to find a buddy with a Mac, and connect your Mac to his/hers via firewire (make sure it is shut down first), and the other Mac should be on, then hold down the "T" key on your computer and turn it on. This will enable your Mac to act as a Harddrive and the image will be mounted on the desktop of the other Mac. Copy all your important files to the properly working Mac, then try to reinstall OSX using your disks. I would use the "Archive and Install" feature, because this should preserve all your files you added to your Mac, and if this fails, you still have all your files on the other Mac. Hope this is clear and that it makes sense! Good luck!

One vote for "It works fine for me."

I'm sorry everyone is having problems. Just to keep this thread from being completely negative though I feel I should mention that I've had no problems.

10.4.3 installed without incident on my iMac and iBook. The only big change I've noticed is that Safari sucks less now. Its noticeably faster rendering pages, especially gmail.

Just my $.02

Thanks for the suggestion.

Is it correct that I could also install a new HD and install the OS there, then my current HD would mount so that I could browse it and retrieve my files?

Does anybody here have an ibook or powerbook with over 1 GB of RAM? I wonder if this update takes care of the Airport issues.

I can't get Gmail to load in Safari at all. In fact, the app just completely locks up now. I get to the gmail homepage, try to log-in, then beachball. Anyone else? Only started happening after the update...

I haven't got the update...but this happens to me. I have to force quit....
1.42 ghz 14" iBook that I bought last month...

I have a RevD 12" PB and 1.25GB of RAM....what Airport issues are you talking about? I have never had Airport issues, and still don't

I set the power mode back to highest from automatic on my PM. That took care of my fan problems.

I've been having problems getting into GMail reliably, but I'm not sure if it's a Mac or ISP thing.

Not sure I want to check it out....my computer is running fine and I might scare her if I visit sites discussing possible problems :p

I think you're right, doesn't seem to apply to my model in general, certainly not MY specific model as everything, save for that Transparent Dock, is fine post-update :D

why is firefox screwing up after this update. it keeps crashing. why?

Yup, mine was doing the same thing. ( i think it is java related). I downloaded the 1.5 RC1, and it seems to work fine (and it works with my schools website, so that is good).

Another solution?

I wasn't aware of this issue last week while playing with my new 12" iBook with 1.5 GB RAM. I was having speed issues with the occasional non-responsive airport that required a reboot to fix. I "solved" this issue by going to BestBuy and purchasing a higher gain antenna for my wireless router. Since then I haven't had any airport issues although I've only connected via airport at home where I have the higher gain antenna.

this happens every single time. when apple releases a major update, there will always be people who expierence problems no matter what.

just install it.

Despite going anal in preperations for installing 10.4.3, everything seems a bit more sluggish...seems like a lot more complaints this time...so again, were forced into being beta-testers for 10.4.4...

Word renreding problems

well i spoke to soon...microsoft word still does its funky thing with the scroll bars at the bottom. Relaunching Word fixes it, but BOY is it annoying. (I thought the seed notes said they fixed this...!!!!)

For me this only occurs in situations where I change monitor configuration (connect second display to powerbook or detach the second display). Restarting the Word helps.

Fine here (he said, timidly)

Tempting fate by posting this, perhaps, but 10.4.3 has been nothing been good for my box so far. Also, I love that the new Safari is the first released browser that could meet the "Acid Test" standard.

Hardware overview (work machine):
Dual-2 GHz Power Mac with 1 GB RAM
Bus Speed: 1 GHz
