am not happy :(

Iv had my Rev B dual 2GHz since February - running from 10.3.7 i think. Been so happy with the noise.

BUT since installing 10.4.3 my CPU fans have been revving far more than Iv ever heard them - sounded like when I ran the hardware test TBH. Not liking the 10.4.3

Front row still works, so does Photobooth. TBH - I havent had a problem with any of Tiger (even 10.4.0) no instability or anything. I only upgraded for security really.

Will need to do a fresh install pretty soon - but its a pain in the arse remembering the system changes uv made to get stuff working. Think il keep a .doc handy to remind me how I got things to work for future reference. Safari is waay slower when scrolling :(

I installed last night, no problems like most people. I was hoping that this would fix my iChat multi-video problem again. It was broke after 10.4.1, then it got fixed in the quicktime 7.0.2 update, then broke again in the 7.0.3. It was great while I had it, I could video with my dad and my sister at the same time, but not anymore.

I'd like to hear if anyone has figured out if there is a way to fix the system.keychain (airport) access problem. In many cases, including me, perm repair does nothing. Yes, I know I can delete the file, but that can't be an ideal solution.

Anyone noticed a difference in anti-aliased fonts? Im typing this in Safari, and the font is very good - better than in 10.4.2. BUT: Elsewhere in the system, for example "About this Machine" there is a greenish/yellowish glow under the fonts. Same deal for System Settings (eng ?) afaics. Ive seen this on GNU/Linux too, when I played around with the font config.

The first thing I noticed after updating to 10.4.3 was the improved font rendering. I'm working on a web site right now, and one thing that was bugging me was finding a font that looked good in Safari. Verdana is very common and is a font that I like in Windows browsers, and it also rendered well in Firefox on my Mac. But for some reason, Safari was chewing up bold Verdana fonts. All the letters were blurry and they ran together. I tried adjusting the level of anti-aliasing in System Preferences, but none of the settings looked particularly good to me.

After the update, I opened up the site I was working on in Safari, and Verdana looked surprisingly good. That made me pay closer attention to font smoothing elsewhere, and I realized it's a huge improvement system-wide.

I'm not seeing the "glow" you mention though. Odd.

When I first made the switch a month ago, I was bothered by OS X's anti-aliasing. It seemed overly blurry compared to XP's fonts, but the one thing it did right was make the smoothed font look as it would when printed on paper. XP's smoothed fonts, while nice, didn't reflect their appearance when printed.

With 10.4.3, I find OS X's anti-aliasing superior. It's smooth, but no longer blurry, and it renders in a way that makes it look the way it does on the printed page.

I'm really enjoying my switch to Mac, btw. Amazing experience so far.

Open up Keychain Access. Then go to "Keychain Access" --> "Keychain first aid" Run the repair utility.

YES!!!!! Finally! No more mile-long emails after my friend and I reply five or six times :D.

Faster

After installing the combo 10.4.3 update (did permissions repair beforehand), my DP 1Ghz would not boot up. I killed power and restarted. It booted in about 1/2 the time 10.4.2 did and the login time was about 2/3 of the 10.4.2. Maybe this will solve the slow slow login times my 10.4 clients have when authenticating against our LDAP server?

I haven't had time to see if any apps are broke yet.

Was it at the grey screen? You know after a update, files are being copied during that grey screen. Next time you might want to let it sit for a while. It can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 minutes.

Thanks, I had tried that too without success (repair declared the file was o.k.). Doh!

LDAP is greatly improved, but you have to restart the server once, repair permissions then restart it again. Took our server 10 minutes to boot up. I thought it was froze. - BTW our server specs are dual 2.0GHz 4GB RAM 2x250GB HDD - this is at school,.

The update will take a while to load up the OS, but afterwards things are faster. I'm scared about the only 1 processor being used, but I'll check that tomorrow.

I SEE AN APPLE MONITOR ON NCIS!!!

I've also tried rebooting and still no luck with getting the update to show up. Any other suggestions? So frustrating.

It is an odd thing but I wonder if there is some reason that software update becomes corrupted? Perhaps it is the preference file that goes bad. Twice now I've had problems with Software Update just at the time of an update. In my case the progress bar moves along as it checks for updates then about 80% of the way in it suddenly crashes. I had this happen once in the spring and again today. In both cases I fixed it by reinstalling Tiger. I just wonder if it wasn't a preference file that I could have deleted. Anyway, if it hasn't shown up for you by now you might try doing some troubleshooting. Maybe remove the preference files for the Finder and for Software update and log out and in? Try creating a new account and see if Software Update works from there?

Installed the update, everything seems to be in order.

Finder's responsiveness is waaaay much faster than previously...

Thanks apple!

Also, Safari seems to be faster too!

I'm very happy with this upgrade...

I've only been using this for a few hours but I have to say this is a superb upgrade. Things work nicer and quicker all over and they also look better. This is how Tiger should have performed when it was first released.

You mistake the word hate for caution. Unsanity calls their stuff haxies. That's what they are. Nothing wrong with that and certainly many of the people in this thread enjoy their work.

However, as you found out, something caused you problems even though you claim to never have an issue, at least with APE or Unsanity. How are you so sure it isn't related?

Anyway, Unsanity will no doubt have updates soon if they require any.

Fair enough, then again the change from/to (I don't know which is which) daylight savings time might have caused the issue. :)

The other thing I don't understand is the folks have have said 10.4 was buggy and caused nothing but trouble (slight exageration). I find 10.4 much more stable and trouble free then 10.3. I guess I could take the time to search the forums for their posts, but that is just way too much work.

Transparent Dock works fine for me, and has done since Jaguar.

ClearDock requires Application Enhancer which is stupid.
Transparent Dock is the bomb.

I've updated and have had no problems. Gonna see if Cocktail has been updated.

I see that every week. It's been there for a long time. They should change all their computers to Macs. They catch more criminals that way.

Front Row launcher

This is the only thing you need in order to get Front Row started:

1. Make sure Front Row.app is present in /System/Library/CoreServices/

2. Go here and download the Front Row launcher and drag it to your Dock.

Clicking the Front Row launcher makes Front Row take over. No need to preload front row during login, or install hacked frameworks and fancy key combos.

PowerMac G5 1.6 won't sleep with 10.4.3...

Hey guys, this is my first time to post on MacRumors though I have been browsing the site for quite a while.

I upgraded to 10.4.3 last night and when I attempted to put the system to sleep, I noticed that all of the fans keep running as if I was still using it. You can hear the hard drive stop and park, and everything but the fans appears to sleep. I have tried to toggle to system CPU settings and the energy saver settings, but nothing seems to work. Zapped the PRAM too. It behaves normally when the mouse is moved or the keyboard is hit and allows me to sign in.

After booting off my firewire drive with 10.4.2 on it, plain jane otherwise, it is able to sleep normally. So I switched to a different drive in my system and did a complete clean install of 10.4 and immediately upgraded to 10.4.3 (full combo ~109 meg installer) and the fan problem is back.

I didn't have time to read every post (got to page 11, some in the 20's to here) but most of the other fan problems mention running full tilt while the system is active... anybody else seeing issues with it sleeping?

Thanks!

after i installed the update on my mini, i can't connect to the internet now. i have a valid ip address, but i can't connect or ping anything. any ideas?

My Rev. C Dual-2GHz fans have been kicking up way more than normal too... hmmm...

I finally have 10.4.2 working well, except for the calculator, which sometimes is ok, and sometimes not.
Safari has crashed a couple of times, which is a drag, but not the end of the world.
All the programs I use work OK, Word, Excel, Photoshop, and a few simple music things.
Printing is great, even without GIMP!

I read that sleep issues, and fans on full tilt issues have come up with this upgrade, and I am NOT going anywhere near it.

I wish Apple would spend some of their [expletive deleted] billions of cash on a few people to TEST the software BEFORE they release it.
You know hire some people to CHECK it over.
"Hey, the fans wont switch off, I guess this needs more work".
Imagine that scenario.

But, I guess thats just too logical and practical for the modern age of beta releases.

Repairing Disk permissions shows a ton of broken stuff ever time you run it?
esp widget stuff.
