Based on my scanning, you are both correct. Guess there's a lot of misinformation out there, including in our own MacGuides article on the topic. Thanks for setting me straight.

Since permissions are repaired based on the BOMs of the target disk, there is of course no good reason to repair permissions from the install disc anyway unless things are so screwed up on your machine that you are unable to do it while booted.

Okay, silly question here:
Is it better to repair permissions on the volume THEN repair permissions on the HD (vs. repair the HD permissions THEN the volume permissions)?

Maybe it doesn't matter but I'm just curious...

My phone syncs! That's good - I've had a short time to put my machine through any heavey lifting, but everything is moving pretty smooth.

Why did you format and re-install ?

Is this a windows habit you still have ?

Yes :(

However, I was planning on doing this anyway when this update came out. Just for the fact of I wanted to strip my Install down alot, not using programs like garage band, office test drive, extra fonts etc.... thus saving alot of space and what not.

Dont want to bring up the Number scheme again, however I need to ask a question.

Why is everyone upset at the fact that 10.4.9 might be the last update? And you all insist there is more numbers like 10.4.10 & 10.4.11?

I think I would be happy if 10.4.9 is the last revesion of tiger... right? We get a new OS that much sooner! Why is everyone affraid of the fact Lepoard might come out real soon? I mean, we already have had Tiger for over a year... im ready for something new...

this may have been said earlier but i didnt want to read every page. ive noticed that quicktime easily plays my AVI files now.....thats nice :)
Yeah. Quicktime/Flip4mac are working much much faster on my 12" PB. It used to take a good minute or two to open a 500-600mb WMV movie. Now it's down to 15-30 seconds. This was one of my biggest pet peevs, as a certain website that I purchase content from only offers WMV. Thanks Apple for fixing this.

I'm sure we all are. Indications from Apple are that new Mac OS X releases will be farther and farther apart. I wouldn't be surprised if 10.5 ends up being 20+ months in the making (counting from Tiger's release) - therefore, 7-8 months from now.

Anyway, back on topic. I heard that some of you had crashy Adiums and Firefoxes. I'm pleased to report that both applications work normally after the update. :D

If you only have one volume on your drive, it doesn't matter which one you choose, and you only need to do one, not both.

If you have multiple volumes with OS X installations on them, selecting the drive will tell Disk Utility to loop through and repair permissions on each volume according to the receipts stored in the respective volume.

If you have multiple volumes and one or more of them are not OS X, you won't be able to select the verify/repair permissions buttons for the drive because it can't check non-OS X volumes. You'd have to do the OS X volumes individually.

There's no reason to base the release of a major OS update on the release of a minor OS update. That just makes no sense. I'm sure everyone here would be thrilled if they released 10.4.8 tomorrow, then 10.4.9 the day after, if that means OS 10.5 would come out the day after that. But that's not how it works. They'll release it when it's good and ready, not when they "run out" of numbers (not that they will, last time I checked they go to infinity) on a minor release. Apple could release 10.5 without ever getting to even 10.4.8. There's no rule that they have to go through all the point releases before 10.5 can come out.

two updates to go

Has anyone mentioned that there are only two updates left in Tiger? ;)

$$$

Actually, I would much rather see Apple fine tune Tiger and get it 100% stable than prematurely leap out with a new Leopard. It would also be nice if the new cat were well refined before it is released into the wild... Alpha is for aardvarks. Beta is vor iBunny. :)

and apple has no clue. their only suggestion was an archive install.

looks like i'll be busy today.:(

This is one major issue I have with apple. There is no "backout" option for updates or package installs. HUGE issue.
