How much better can we get?

I'm a recent (ish) switcher of about 12 - 18 months, and I can't wait for Tiger. Spotlight looks to be a truly fantatsic new way of using our OS and Dashboard will be so much better implemented than the likes of Konfabulator, not to mention free with the OS! Panther really only had Expose that interested me greatly, but there is so much to look forward to with this release. Apple are doing a fantastic job.

To prove that they are on the cutting edge of technology, just use Windows! I was forced to install a wireless network for my fathers small home business and WOW!! XP is just the worst, most confusing, badly coded spyware infested OS Ive ever used. It really, really makes you appreciate Panther. And this from a switcher who only two years ago, used to rave incessantly about how microsoft "invented" the computer revolution. Pah!

This will be the first time I actually purchase a retail version of Mac OS X in the store.

10.1 = It came included w/ iMac 800 (15" rev a)
10.2 = I skipped 10.2; yes it was hard, but I prevailed.
10.3 = It came included w/ PowerBook G4 (12" rev c)
10.4 = I think I remember reading somewhere that it will be awhile before Steve releases 10.5 Lhama. I don't want to skip this Mac OS X release, because there is a lot in it I feel that I would use. Since I have no plans to upgrade my PowerBook in the near future, it just makes sense for me to shell out the money for it.

AHHH!!!! OMG!!!!!!

AHHH!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, PLEASE DO NOT BE AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE, THAT WOULD BE INHUMANE. I AM SOOOO ANXIOUS NOW. WOW, WHAT I AM GOING TO DO????? THAT IS DURING SCHOOL. I was hoping for end of June so I could camp out at an Apple store, but this is during the academic quarter, dang I guess I will be missing class. I have tons of respect for Think Secret, this is going to happen. OMG, I love Apple. Cheers.

Typical! I thought Tiger would be out after I went travelling for 6 months (and therefore away from my Mac) but not just after I left! Never mind, a sleuth of updates will be available for me on my return in September!

I am just curious about something. I am going to assume that everyone here is using Panther yes? Panther is indeed a GREAT OS. But apparrently it isn't good enough? Why can you over anxious Mac users not be satisfied with Panther? What does Panther not do? If you are not satisfied with Panther maybe you should write your own OS? This way you can be totally satisfied and not have to speculate about what Apple is going to do. :)

panther is good enough. but the updates to the pro video apps will have as minimum spec, 'OS X.4 (tiger) and 1gb ram'. the upgrade to fcp 5 will be too good to pass up.

at this stage i would like to say anyone could have predicted the release dates..........i beat TS to fcp5/qt7/tiger release dates. if TS is right with tiger i'll be a day off. i'm still going with my prediction of dual 3ghz with fcp 5. did TS read my post and use that as "a source" or they just used the same simple deduction as i did?
my guess is here :p

Hey I'm getting married April 16th!

Better refine my registry!!! :)

Congrats!! I'm getting married April 1st. (NO JOKE!) My fiancee has said that she wants to get me a new mac for a wedding present (can you see why i'm marrying her?) and I've been waiting, hoping for news like this. If i can't get a brand spankin' new speed bumped PM with Tiger, having Tiger pre-installed will be fine!

Go Apple!!!

I kind of find it hard to believe this, but this quite from the article: "At least one of Apple's new pro apps the company will introduce at NAB will also require Tiger, sources say." does make sense ... Can it be true :eek:

Good Job Apple!! :thumbs up:

Longhorn seems like an eternity away at this point..

EDIT: Now update the damn PMs!!!

Trust me chief, when you see what tiger will do with a Dual 2.5 you won't even need an update.

As long as it comes before August, it's cool with me.

Also, at the Firefox guy or just anybody in general; don't you prefer Safari to Firefox?
I have both Mac and Windows and I can honestly say that Safari is better than Firefox on both Mac and Windows, imo.

to all of you commenting on my post:

i was refering to 8A393. and to clear up any people now, i am dev.

while I to had stuck it out for 3 builds on my primary AL PowerBook I could not take the applications that quit or would not work. While writing papers in Word scroling up and down results in all the text to disapear except for a few lines of parts of the text. I use my computer all day, and then for 6 hours at night. I REALLY test it. I run everything from Motion, to Traktor 2.6 (doesn't run), to popcorn- quits, to all office programs. While it may seem stable I really challenge you to put it to the test, which is what the public will do. I don't think it is even close to being ready for Grandma's to use it. I had major prefernce problems, issues where the preferences for finder would start from their default setting for no reason resulting in all finder windows to be blank and missing their applications. I can give people more observations because i don't think that violated the ADC rules. Just look at video on Tiger and how it displays text, its horible.

also the last seed was feb 24...that was a LONG time ago if the product is just about ready to go GM

Well, there's your problem, you're rying to run motion on an aluminum powerbook. Hell, I get the occasional bit of slowdown on my dual 2.5 but only when I've got many many layers of effected video running.

about time eh?

wasn't it rumored that tiger was going to come out last summer, then it went to dec/ jan at latest, now its april. Not a problem, but I would be shocked if this wasn't true.

Wow! That seems a bit early. But then again I have no idea how far along Tiger actually is. Maybe they will announce it at the beginning of April but won't ship until the end of the month or in early May. I think they did something similiar with Panther, where they announced it's release at the beginning of the month and started shipping it towards the end of the month.

The other great news is the hardware updates. I wonder if a 2Ghz iMac G5 upgrade means anything with respect to the PowerMac G5's being upgraded. An update to the eMac line is long overdue, I've been a strong supporter of the eMac because it is perfect as a family computer in households with small children. It's design might not be elegant but certainly it is rugged, a giant thick white plastic blob body can take more of a beating then the bodies for the Mac mini, iMac G5, or PowerMac G5.

Not really. Jobs always said "first half of 2005" as long as I can remember.

Correction:

10.3 = It came included w/ iBook G4 (rev a)

All of the other Mac lines had to wait a week before they shipped with Panther included.

hmmmm.... Your right on that, but I could have sworn there was at least a rumor back then. Jobs didn't say first half of '05 a year ago, did he? I thought he didn't give any time frame back then. wasn't it in like sept/ oct. when he gave the time frame, or what? guess it doesn't really matter now.

you know how windows has the new serial number guard thing, could apple be doing the same thing with tiger? I know they always have you enter the sn, but it still allows you to install it. I will admit I have purchased the os and put it on 2 comp's instead of one, but hey, i have put over 10 g's into apple products, so I think it isn't that big of a crime. ;)

but no that is not the problem, yes motion may slow down my computer but that is not the problem in Tiger. Applications all feel buggy just because the carbon framework as an example is in my opinion still very beta. This is a VERY important framework. Motion was an example and does not attribute an explination to any of my other problems. Also, Motion works under system specs with my powerbook.

I hope it is ready

The scary part is if Apple releases tiger that early there is still time for ANOTHER OS release before Longshot makes its debut and not only another release but an 18 month release timeframe.

Most excellent! :cool:

*drools at the thought of what might come out in 10.5*

I'd rather have them wait (if needed) to release a rock-stable release. After all, it will not be delayed if they release it June 30.
