Personally I don't think it is a big deal.

I for one have been using Tiger ever since its first seed release and have tried all of the seeds. So far I haven't found spotlight to be very useful. I certainly don't find it any more useful than Launch Bar which I have also used for about 2 years now.

I would guess that I probably don't use spotlight more than a couple times a week if even that much.
But maybe some will find it more compelling than I do.

i think you're missing something. you'll use it more than you think. those Smart Folders in Tiger are powered by Spotlight... as such, i think indirectly you'll be using spotlight a lot more than you expect. whether it's in your email, finder, xcode, etc...

No way! It was written originally by Microsoft after all :D

wrong... OS/2 was written by microsoft and IBM... together. it was a combined effort.

Doubt I'll use smart folders either. I haven't used them once since I first acquired my first beta at WWDC 2004. But you never really know maybe someday.

And I've heaqrd that Longhorn will be shipped on November 5, 200x--

Well, assuming your "x" is the Roman numeral 10, then yes, I agree, I think Longhorn will be shipped November 5, 2010. Hmm, or the way you're written it, would that technically be 20010...

By that time, Microsoft won't be the dominant force in the world of computers, so they might as well quit while they're "ahead".

Oh really? in which countries?

You're kidding, right?

If Apple do announce it on April 1st in the USA it will actually be April 2nd here in Australia

So that means one of two things;
1. It's genuine or 2. It's a belated April Fool's joke :D

I am pretty sure, that Microsoft will make it ready by 20010.
Wonder, what Apple has that year though..

If you're talking about technology, Microsoft was never ahead... ;)

I guess I could have, I was just replying to posts as I read them. Sorry about that, Captain Efficiency.

I posted the same thing earlier.

It might be close.

Although if I remember right, I believe Jobs stated this would be the last of the "frequent" OS updates, i.e. ~1 OS per year. So, perhaps 10.5 won't be released until 2007 or later. Hmm, guess that doesn't change things though in a way, maybe 10.5 will still be out before Longhorn regardless.. :p

What can I say, Shard, you just like to read your own posts.
Go ahead, make your day !

And I would say, that Regina rhymes with.. smth else much better.. :D

Thanks, don't mind if I do!

As for my Regina comment, yes, that's kind of the whole premise behind the joke... glad you figured it out... :p

Anyone want to takes bets to see if 10.5 is released before Longhorn?

Well I hope not...I think given the expense I would like a couple of Years of Tiger and updates, before I am forced (and Geeks must have the latest) to buy whatever comes after Tiger...

Hold on, announced April 1st??

April 1st??

I haven't read the whole thread, so maybe someone pointed this out already, but April 1 was the day that Apple Computer began. Its the 29th aniversary. So it would be a good day to make the Tiger announcement.

The innards were certainly an IBM design--practically like their own VM/CMS mainframe operating system.

I am just curious about something. I am going to assume that everyone here is using Panther yes? Panther is indeed a GREAT OS. But apparrently it isn't good enough? Why can you over anxious Mac users not be satisfied with Panther? What does Panther not do? If you are not satisfied with Panther maybe you should write your own OS? This way you can be totally satisfied and not have to speculate about what Apple is going to do. :)

I find Panther a little creaky on the G5 (very nice on the iBook, though), and desparately need a decent indexed search mechanism (and would really like stored searches, both for email and files). So yeah, that's two things that Panther doesn't do for me.

As for writing my own OS: no. I've got better things to do with my time, and hacking a kernel is not my idea of fun. Better to leave it to people who can do it better than I can, and faster, and cleaner, and seem to enjoy it.
