Right when I'll be getting my tax returns back. I have no excuse not to upgrade.

I'm with you. I think that would add to the rationale for a release date around this time -- people have extra money burning a hole in their pocket...

Many people have said that they'd rather wait for a rock solid OS than one right now with bugs...I'd rather have one right now...even if it has some bugs. One of my drives will keep Panther on it until all of Tiger's bugs have been worked out, while I'll install Tiger on my bootable striped RAID, so I don't have anything to lose.

Also, I really really really hope Apple gives some sort of last minute update to the UI...Aqua is starting to look REALLY dated IMO. Very "early millenium"...if we're even allowed to say that yet.

April 15th eh. That'd be pretty early. I hope it's ready.

Actually, Insider states the rumored announcement date to be April 1. Isn't that April Fools day? Watch out. I will get it, but I can wait 'til June.

hmmmm.... Your right on that, but I could have sworn there was at least a rumor back then. Jobs didn't say first half of '05 a year ago, did he? I thought he didn't give any time frame back then. wasn't it in like sept/ oct. when he gave the time frame, or what? guess it doesn't really matter now.

Yes, he did. Actually, the first official statement was made at WWDC. The rumours you refer to date back to the weeks before WWDC when Apple confirmed WWDC '04 would be about Tiger. Back then, many people believed (or rather hoped) Tiger would make its debut sometime in late 2004. Apple themselves never said anything other than "the first half of 2005"

I wonder why the rumored "official" announcement is slated for April 1, April Fool's Day? Watch out.
I can wait a couple more months, even if it does come out then, I'll wait to see if there are bugs still crawling.

A) You just posted almost exactly the same thing

B) You're also approximately the 3,546th person to point out the "April fool's" thing. I think we can safely assume most people's first thought when reading the rumor is "but that's April fool's day!" we don't need to post it ad nauseum.

April 1....sound like a nice April fools joke ;) It would be grat and not allow MSFT to have the 64bit OS press to itself. Updates to the eMac and iMac would be great as well - still I think the PM needs something if iMac gets bumped.

Mellow out and read the fine print, since you're so given to detail and overstatement. I edited a duplication error in the second post, but thanks for pointing out your firm grasp of the obvious.

Hmm, since Apple haven't officially announced when Tiger would be ready, and they probably want to make the official version bug free, I believe it would be a final release.(They would next add a dozen patches, so...)

If it's ready in April it would be really great! I've really been looking forward to it! :D (and i'm not the only one:)) So now, here's what I want most -- Tiger, a new iBook revision and a new iPod! :p it's not much is it? ;)

In complex software like an Operating system there is no such thing as bug free.
Unless you mean they are not charging for the bugs :)

have you also noticed that on the cocktail website that the beta version of the program for Tiger comes out in April as well, coincidence???

Dated?? Eh, if your running Jaguar maybe, but Panther still looks fresh IMHO.

Like I said in another thread, Tiger looks different, but after using the developer seeds for a while now, I'm almost use to it.

maybe do an Windows XP (shudders) and put a few subthemes in. like Aqua/Graphite and a new look theme too.

or maybe just wait till OS11

anywho, im happy with the rumored release date. but i can wait too

I wonder if anyone knows that April 1st is April Fools Day? Apple announcing Mac OS X.4 on April Fools day?

I just thought I'd mention that since no one else has thought of it! :D

Oh and BTW..there hasn't been anywhere near 3,546 posts so even approximately doesn't work! :p

You guys are focusing on the wrong thing. The real question is, when will it be available on Bit-Torrent. :D

I am just curious about something. I am going to assume that everyone here is using Panther yes? Panther is indeed a GREAT OS. But apparrently it isn't good enough? Why can you over anxious Mac users not be satisfied with Panther? What does Panther not do? If you are not satisfied with Panther maybe you should write your own OS? This way you can be totally satisfied and not have to speculate about what Apple is going to do. :)

This age-old question to me boils down simply to a matter of taste. Panther has some bugs; Tiger will be a step forward in many areas, with updated software/compatibility/interface, even if new bugs are introduced.

Remember the claim that this will be the "most important Mac OS X" (likely paraphrased here) since the initial release of Mac OS X (10.0)? Once Tiger is released everyone will have an opinion about that--opinions that may not all agree--but Spotlight alone may be worth my money, as would be QT 7's tight integration, and Core Image; not to mention that the Find By Content indexing on Panther seems rather substandard, even if it (sometimes) works for me. I may think of other things that I'd want to tack on here, but after playing about with a (legitimately obtained) version of Tiger I'd like to add one thing: the hopefully-soon-to-be-released OS seems a fair bit faster. To be expected--not an earth-shattering revelation--but always a good thing; and the optimisations generally remain undone until the end, too!

I don't have the experience to construct my own OS from scratch, either. :p

Yes, there are always bugs, but still they should at that time have a stable version ;) I hope they don't charge for the bugs :) :p
