It appears one user posted the intro video for Apple's Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).

Interesting music. I still like MS's startup music when you first run XP better. Its kind of a mellow laid back track. Really well done and long enough that its actually a music piece. Got it on my iPod in fact.

Or how about Lion?

How about.... The Lion King? C'mon, Steve must still have some kind of relationship going with Disney to license the name. :p

10.5 Simba

...or did someone beat me to this Doofy option already?

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

That's an April Fools', right? :)

Just kidding...

Seriously though -- the WinXP setup music drives me positively insane. Whenever we get a new batch of laptops in at work, they sit there looping that damn music over, and over, and over and over again. That same chord progression drilling its way into my skull, with nary a hint of rhythm... unless you count that 'tap tap tap' at the beginning when the 'Help' button makes itself known. Dull, dull, dull :)

Worst of all, on a laptop with no physical volume control, there's absolutely no way to stop it! The drivers haven't loaded yet to make the hotkeys work. I end up grabbing a handful of 3.5mm headphone jacks out of the store and plugging them into the headphone socket of each machine. Yes - it bothers me that much :)

Still -- I don't think that the 10.4 music's as good as Panther's Röyskopp track. Very refreshing to hear an actual piece of music from a CD I own and a band I like used in a setup program. Shame it wasn't the whole track though.

I think when Longhorn come out, Mac OS X will gose 10.5 (cannot think about name of another kine of tiger here) which will be more advance than tiger and maybe longhorn.

But for now Tiger vs XP, everyone know who win.

Steve Jobs told us the code name of the next version of Mac OS X, its Lion, check out this image:

Mac OS 10.5 Lion

It was present during a tour of some of the new features in Tiger.

The track is actually written by the Sofa Surfers which happens to be on the kruder & dofrmeister sessions cd. Its all about giving props to the right people where they are due.

Accepted - although having heard the original sofa surfers job, it's virtually unrecognisable due to the superb remix job of Messieurs Kruder and Dorfmeister. :)

A couple of questions out of curiosity:

1. Where on my HD is the current Panther video stored?

2. What program do you think Apple used to make this? Are there any prosumer type apps out there to do this in?

Thanks as always.
Answer 1: It is probably stored in the bowels of the computer. Try searching through the hidden files. You can download Tinkertool, an application that lets you see files on your computer that are hidden (have a dot (.) in front of the name).

Answer 2: There are many applications that can allow somone to do this. There is many 3D applications out there such as maya, cinema 4D, carrara, animation master, 3DS max, Cheetah 3d, and many others. Those all vary from consumer to professional.

Anyways, I think this is very plausible. Reguarding the desktop thing, it doesn't look like they are creating a new background because they would have shown it by now, either on the internet or in one of the developer releases. it is a detail, but it is still a little late.

I think it loops twice and it stop or at least that is the case on the last couple of IBM thinkpads I've setup recently. It seems like it loops because its about 8 minutes long..hang on...*checks iPod*...5:24 long.
Too each their own. I think its calming. :) But it would have to be since that is the point you are “activating” your computer.

Im not saying its a quick hack job, i just think its funny that anything perceived as coming out of apple is automaticly "amazing" to apple fans.
Dont get me wrong, ive been using macs since...ah...late 80's? But it is still just a computer. (please, no hate mail) : )

As for the difficulty of it, moderate.

Could be done completely in After Effects. (probably was) Standard 3d layers with beveled edges applied. Camera work is good but a little jerky. Standard 3d light source, spotlight. Bad lighting on the "Tervetuloa" makes me suspect that this is a fake, but i dont know. Seems people who may know have confirmed it is the real deal. We'll see.
It has nothing to do with it being Apple. It's not that great of a video, and it really isn't any different to me than the Windows XP welcome video (which is followed by a tour, I might add). I was commenting on the fact that just because it isn't a groundbreaking, amazing, Oscar-winning piece of cinema doesn't mean it was done it someone's basement in 3 hours. The final product is not a difficult piece, no. I never claimed it was--but it likely didn't just spring up like that from nothingness. I find the whole piece to be jerky, with poor light and shadow depth reminiscent of mid-1990s CG, but then again, this is a low quality rip.

A work's difficulty isn't the only factor in the time and effort involved. Artists sometimes spend the proposed "few hours" positioning a single element. Production takes time and work, even if you're using After Effects, from developing the concept to getting the individual "Welcome" montage elements correct, matched, and approved to getting the camera along the appropriate path with proper lighting and shadow effects (what After Effects does for you is not often adequate). It's not likely that, even with AE, any of the presets were left alone. Then there's the matter of producing for a corporation, where any five-minute job ends up taking no less than a full day for vetting and reviewing.

Actually Windows x64 came out of Beta 2 days ago so Tiger is not the first 64bit Consumer OS to hit the market.

That hardly even counts, It's not really a 64 Bit OS, Hell, if you play by those rules, when I compiled some new binaries to run under the hood of Panther then I alone had the first 64 bit OS. Tiger is Built from the ground up in 64 bit, XP 64 is not.

Windows XP x64 is no less built "from the ground up in 64 bit" than Tiger, and in fact is MORE rebuilt than Tiger in this regard. It uses native 64-bit GUI applications and a user front end and has a pervasive 64-bit-ness throughout. It has more of a right to declare itself a 64-bit OS than Tiger, that's for damn sure. As much as I like Apple and love OS X, it's not a real 64-bit OS. Simple fact.

EDIT: if you need further clarification, look at the system requirements. Tiger will run on a G4 and probably a G3 (32-bit systems); WinXP x64 cannot be installed on a non-64b system because nothing will work. Tiger will take advantage of some G5 capabilities, but does not rely on them and still uses 32-bit code for most functions on even G5 computers.

Maya Most Likely, I mean it's apple, they're not exactly scrounging for change. And I most SERIOUSLY doubt that they used 3DS.

In regards to the debate about the panther desktop pattern, it's an image that everyone recognizes. No one has seen the default Tiger desktop pict yet so they can't connect with it they way they can with this one.

That's how I see it, anyway.

They could use Windows XP's Crystal Wall paper, since it looks very Mac OS X like.

Not Bad, But Music Sucks!

Panther aqua desktop image, funky little flyaway Apple logo, but that's about it... Plus what is with the awful tune? Bring back Royksopp from Panther!! :)

Enjoy the rush while it lasts....as soon as Microsoft actually puts effort into it's OS program again (namely, Longhorn) the way they did in the mid-90's, Apple will go back into the hole.

Here come the flames and the magic release date arguments....
not matter what longhorn is im staying with apple a good compony always trys to make the best product it can {namely all apple stuff

I say they should use David Bowies "Lets Dance". ;)

I'm not going to be concerned about the code name for 10.5. Come on Steve let us know something about the Tiger release. Or is Steve in his vast office laughing at all of us thinking that this was announcement day. :p :D
