MacMall says it's been shipped and FedEx says it should arrive on Monday. No indications -- at least yet -- of it being "turned around" as sumsugar experienced.

Got two day

I just hope mine gets here before that weekend. I'm really looking forward to starting fresh. It's going to be a fun weekend re-installing all my software.

Leap of faith...

For the first time ever I've ordered an OS version before seeing definitive testing done by impartial parties or myself for that matter. Of course up until this year I was buying versions of Windows! :)

On a side note, maybe the new PowerMacs are coming next week as all but the single 1.8 have changed to 3-5 day shipping...

Why don't you try to get the tracking number from MacMall? What day did you order, and what day did they ship? I just ordered today, so I really appreciate your help.

This is from the Apple website to end all this, "OMG, it says 'Processing Order,' it must be coming tomorrow!" Sorry, kiddies, it only means it's in their computer waiting until someone comes along, gets the box, puts a label on it, and sends it out. Then, they click a button and your status says, "shipping." Shipping takes a few days... I'm in Canada, and my free shipping is 8 - 10 days, and express (cost extra bucks) is 3-6 days. I don't know the exact shipping day totals in America, but I gather it's pretty close.

So, once it says shipping, add a few days to it and you can guess when it Tiger may be coming to your door.

In other words, start getting excited when it says "shipping," not when it says "processing."

:D

I'm debating whether I should upgrade to Tiger from Panther or not. I have an 800Mhz G3 iBook with a Radeon 7500 32MB VRAM graphics card.

Will I see a major performance hit if I upgrade? any thoughts on that or directions to Apple info that can help me in that decision?

Thanks.
[edit] corrected video card [/end]

Your iBook is within Apple's specs:

No performance hit as long as you make sure your directory is in good shape prior to installing and follow all these precautions:

MacMall doesn't give out the FedEx tracking number. They use an internal system. According to their tracking info, my order left Rialto, CA yesterday morning on its way to Austin.

Not if the translucency was set to 10-15%...and you throw your widgets onto your second monitor.

The reason is pretty simple: if something on a dashboard widget changes, you can't see it until you switch to the dashboard.

That's not a dashboard anymore, that's, well, something else...a desk accessory layer that's invisible most of the time.

I run two monitors myself and Still need more. I dont think i could dedicate room just for a few widgets. but. I think your thinking more of heads up display then a dash.

with a dash in a car you look down to see it. otherise your looking straight ahead.. with the apple dashboard you only see the dash when you click a button. this can be a middle mouse button if you wanted too. and since it quickly jumps in with expose.. i dont see the need for them to occupy room 100% of the time.. but i suppose having the option wouldnt hurt

Whenever I heard about Dashboard, I figured that it was an always-visible semi-translucent window layer for gadets, etc.

Apparently, Dashboard is activated like expose - you click a button (or a key) and the widgets switch-in, making your desktop into a temporary dashboard display. Then when you're done it switches the Dashboard layer out, bringing you back to whatever you were doing.

Is there a preference or something to make dashboard always-visible at 20% (or 10%) opacity?

It's kind of silly not to be able to see these widgets until you do something. It'd be much neater if they were visible all the time.

BTW, the Tiger UI seems to be about 15-20% faster then Panther on this 1ghz eMac I've got it running on. Very nice.

Most importantly, ASM still works! Yahoo!

Im not using Tiger yet, but i would never want little mini-apps on my screen over shadowing applicatoin, ohh how annoying that would be, little things u can see half see, being accidentaly clicked on everywhere

Mine's Also an Educational Copy, and says the same exact thing as yours does. - I placed my Order on 4/13 little after 9pm Pacific.

Same here, but from my experiences from the Apple.com online store, when the status of your order changes, more importantly to shipped, they will send you out an e-mail, with the tracking number. So stand by your mailboxes.

I'm not even getting it delivered, so I guess I'll be getting it on the 29th.

Hey, if I use my iPod to back up my HD, and I erase my HD and do a fresh install of Tiger, will iTunes erase my iPod when I first plug it in, as my library on my Mac is empty and iTunes syncs my iPod to my iTunes library?

I'm just preparing for the big day (29th for me). Hope you guys report the bugs here so that I can wait for updates before installation. :)

Yes, I think unless you were using some sort of hack that might be available around the place, iTunes will wipe your Pod...

I highly recommend you create a bunch of iTunes Backup playlists with all your music and burn them as DVD data discs (4.1 Gig each or so) from within iTunes. This will also serve you well in the future as an offsite backup against theft/fire. Once you have the discs you should be able to reimport them into your iTunes running on Tiger.

Not an expert at this but should work

Well, they don't occupy space, really. They just would sort of float there. To interact with them you'd still have to click the dashboard key/button.

Think of your monitors: one monitor is the primary, and the other one(s) have extra stuff. Your focus might shift from monitor to monitor, but (unless you have a really lazy eye) only one monitor is "primary."

The secondary monitors, well, those would be for dashboard widgets. They'd just sit on top of your other windows like ghosts.

Time to start figuring out how to hack that in. Once you see dashboard, you'd see why this would be a better idea (and the first real use for translucency I've seen).

Sorry but I have to butt in. iTunes will not wipe your iPod. After doing a clean install or whatever, and you hook up your iPod to your computer - iTunes will then open and ask if you would like the iPod to be synced with that computer. You select no, and your music will stay on your iPod. Then you could use some software to take it off.

However here is something more simple. Turn on disk mode - delete the songs from your itunes but be sure not to have those songs go to the trash. Drag your hold music folder to your iPod disk drive and they will be ready for you to drag onto your iTunes app when you do a clean install.

Whew...that's the best way if you don't have a dvd burner. I have about 2000 mp3s with no dvd burner yet, I know what its like to lose music and it sucky!

Tiger and final cut studio. I'm jealous. I just hope Tiger brings some performance gains to Motion.
