WTF? It's still not seeded to us developers? I would certainly hope they make it available this weekend.

Apple doesn't always seed the exact release build (for download) but you will get an official copy in your "next" (depends on timing) ADC mailing.

My order is still at Processing Order, but it says shipped on or before 4/28 via 2nd Day. Hopefully I get it early, but I don't want to ruin the anticipation for the actual launch day.

You want to host the download of 2+ GB of data by lots of users? ...and answer the support calls on why they can't get it burned to DVD... etc.

It would be cool but not realistic at this time.

How much data do you think that they push out via Software Updater? I don't think that it is the bandwidth that is the issue, I think it is the DRM. Plus, most people would like to have a physical copy of their OS for installs. Also, in the event of a crash, it would be pretty difficult to fire up Software Updater...

That being said, I would love to see this someday...

Ship Date vs. Delivery Date

It seams like some have not recognized that the date of 4/28 is a ship on or before date not a DELIVERY date.

Dashboard question

Whenever I heard about Dashboard, I figured that it was an always-visible semi-translucent window layer for gadets, etc.

Apparently, Dashboard is activated like expose - you click a button (or a key) and the widgets switch-in, making your desktop into a temporary dashboard display. Then when you're done it switches the Dashboard layer out, bringing you back to whatever you were doing.

Is there a preference or something to make dashboard always-visible at 20% (or 10%) opacity?

It's kind of silly not to be able to see these widgets until you do something. It'd be much neater if they were visible all the time.

BTW, the Tiger UI seems to be about 15-20% faster then Panther on this 1ghz eMac I've got it running on. Very nice.

Most importantly, ASM still works! Yahoo!

Sorry but its no different than iTunes.

Not sure I see the DRM issue... you would be downloading it from Apple.

No DRM exists on the Mac OS X DVD/CD to preventing you from letting friends use your disk, you ripping the disk and sharing, etc.

Apple tries to trust their users and I glad for that since adding DRM would just add to the potential issues at and after install time (as well as adding cost to Apple and users). Now if folks continue to break that trust then Apple may be forced to take action and use some type of DRM / system authentication.

Agreed however such a download would likely require one to burn the downloaded image to DVD before install anyways, so you would have a local physical copy.

Build

Please post the Tiger build number if you have the release version - please !

(Apple menu -> About this Mac -> Click "Version 10.4" and it will display the build number)

Thanks in advance :)

Of course people should be smart enough not to download it unless they have a dvd burner.

Retail 10.4 = Build 8A428

I'm hoping to get my copy of Tiger on the 29th; that's my birthday so its the perfect present. Unfortunately I have 3 days of college left (finals :( ) and I figure I better wait until afterwards to install. I would hate to be at school, install Tiger and then not be able to get on the network or internet. Yes, that is unlikely, but very possible with my school. They force all residential PCs run Cisco Clean Access (I'm sure some of you know what this program is) and last Wednesday the server refused to let my PB onto the network. Something about access denied, but was resolved within 2 hours.

Well the download of Tiger is about the same as 800+ songs and the connection to download that large image would stay open far longer then for song downloads (unless they split the image up into pieces... adding to the user experience).

Bandwidth is an issue, as is user experience and support that would go along with it, etc.

all you have to do is press a single button to see it. I dont see that as being alot of work. and why would you want all your widgets visable all the time. it would be very distracting from your normal work

THIS COULD NOT BE MORE TRUE! However, Apple is smart enough to tell their customers that they aren't responsible for any data lost. This would be included, as is the music store purchases.

Maybe this depends on location, because my last three Apple shipments (last being two weeks ago) came via FedEx.

Apple uses all the different carriers; it just depends on who wins the price and timeline comparison for whatever specific item they are shipping...

I'd say developers will get their free Tiger DVD's in the next ADC mailing, which will probably be posted out in the first week of May. I doubt it will be the fully boxed retail version... Although it would be nice if they shipped to developers at the same time as those who preordered..

In the meantime I'm running the last seeded Build 8A425 for a while now without any problems.

The only thing that might cause some folks difficulty is when you install tiger, Mail converts your MBOX file to the new EMLX format to support Spotlight, which can be a bit of a pain. Especially if you use other email clients...

Anyway a useful fix can be found at EMLX to MBOX convertor

(assuming they have a BT client our Apple hooks them up with one)

AppleSupport: Hello?
Customer: Yeah I am downloading Tiger using BT and it is going real slow.
AppleSupport: Yes that is to be expected until you stop becoming a greedy leech but lets check what ports are mapped through your NAT and firewall to insure you will get the best speed.
Customer: WTF, I am not a leech... I paid for this $^%& download... oh and NAT what?

:p

Same here - looks like someone's gonna loose their job; Wow, Is demand so high that they're having to free-up more bandwidth.... Well, looks like I cant purchase Tiger just yet..

This is not due to demand I don't think. I've had this problem in the past when nothing special was going on.

There is a problem with all .Mac resources right now!
My Mail App keeps re-downloading Headers for 1900 emails over and over again - they must be doing something with .Mac; even my iDisk is 80% slower than usual. Also, just went back to the Store and the Server Error still exists. Is anyone experiencing the same issues?

I have a possibly stupid question, does apply charge you when you place your order or when it ships? I'm just curious, my order also says processing (yes I caught the post where its the new term for open) and was wondering thats all.
