Has anyone noticed that Smart Folders don't work in Front Row? That really sucks - I created a cool Smart Folder that would list my recently downloaded video, but alas, Smart Folders are not supported by Front Row. I hope they'll address this at some point.

Smart folders are not real folders. They merely serve as a placeholder for a search.More like a metafile than an actual folder. They just look like a folder because of the icon.

There is nothing to address.:)

Even MORE irritating... Rented movies don't show up in Front Row! I have to open them inside iTunes.

Anyone else have the issue where the dock appears after a while in QuickTime full view (NOT Front Row)? Happens to me a lot, and my dock isn't set to auto hide.

Compare a Mac Genius to a Best Buy Geek? Now there's a "night and day" situation!
...
Best Buy told her she needed a new hard drive and that would require a new copy of XP (she was told her existing license was no good anymore) and they wanted to charge her $650!
...
Mac geniuses are pretty good on the whole, and I've certainly never gotten advice THAT bad from them!

Except that one time they told me the cost to upgrade the RAM in my then current G4 mini would be "around $480" for 1GB of RAM. (for one 168 pin module of 1GB, available for $48 back then).

A friend of mine had her machine (windows) refuse to boot. Kept booting, rebooting, rebooting etc etc. She hadn't updated virus software in living memory and she had a ton of viruses.

Best Buy told her she needed a new hard drive and that would require a new copy of XP (she was told her existing license was no good anymore) and they wanted to charge her $650!

I booted her machine into recovery mode and restored it to factory condition from the restore partition (after putting her drive in a USB enclosure and copying all her data off first.) Took 2 hours (plus about 8 goes round the houses with Microsoft Update till it decided it was up to date.) Cost: $0!

Here is a story that our local ABC station (WCVB-5) aired in mid-November investigating computer repair prices and quality of the job, all that the people did was intentionally disable the laptop's Hard Drive, and only one of the three repair shops (Comp USA) was able to repair the actual cause. The Geek Squad guy was way off on his diagnostic of the problem. There are videos of the repairs and such on the page, here is the link:

Perhaps, but then I would think someone could argue they need to change the icon, if it is going to look like a folder to the average user, then it should probably be able to act like one.

personally how it behaves now doesn't bother me, but I could see how it could be confusing to people.

You do realize a new version of Front Row is due out in a week don't you ? ;)

Who cares that they're not real folders? Neither are aliases, and they work. They create the illusion of a folder - that's the point; so I would say that there is something to address. Smart Folders. Not so smart after all.

They had the perfect way to organize TV shows in Tiger, but then in Leopard they changed it slightly. Instead of listing each tv show, then each season in the next menu level, Leopard initially just put all episodes of a particular series into a big list after you chose the series. Not the greatest system, but still much better than what they have now. In the root menu for tv shows, they now make a seperate entry for each season for each show(some of mine have up to 10 seasons) and whats worse is that they don't TELL you which season it is in the menu, you pretty much have to guess.

This is an inexplicably dumb move from Apple, who had a really sharp UI for this prodcut to start with then just seems tried to intentionally destroy it. These really makes me mad because Front Row was one of the big reasons I upgraded from a powerbook. The ability to basically have a remote that allowed my mac to act as a TV for all my purchased iTunes shows and dvds(ripped with handbrake) was great. But Apple has gone and made the UI almost unusable. I would go back to Tiger, but I have an SR macbook, so that isn't possible.

However, the odds of that being fixed in 10.5.2 are pretty slim. Anyone know of a good front row replacement that is compatible with the apple remote?

I tend to agree. There are a number of issues with Front Row 2 that need to be addressed. I generally don't like to keep all my movies / videos / etc. in iTunes, but rather keep them stored in folders in the Movie folder. They show up fine and I have a lot of control over how they are arranged, but, for some unknown reason, because they are not in iTunes, Front Row won't remember where I stopped watching one of them. This is a ridiculous limitation. If Front Row can remember where I stopped in a video in one place (iTunes) it should remember where I stop in a video somewhere else (Movie folder).

Aliases are different from smart folders. An alias is a built in function in the file system, I.E. the file system/kernel does all the work and front row talks to the file system, whereas smart folders are controlled by finder, which front row doesn't talk directly to.

(This is not exactly accurate but it's an easy way to understand the difference :) )

hmm so how likely is it that 10.5.2 is released today? i'm in the UK, and would love to know if its worth staying up for!!

Appalling, but not even a little bit surprising. I know that when I am in CC & BB, I routinely hear the "experts" telling customers the worst sort of BS and misdirection(CompUSA was better, Microcenter better still). I can barely keep myself from telling the customer how wrong the sales guy is and why. I know when they ask me if I need help, I always want to say "No, but is there anything YOU would like to know?"

I've always felt that Apple stores could be better, but that the alternatives are so unbelievably awful that Apple folks are very good in comparison. They still want to replace the logic board every time you have a loose wire, but they at least know SOMETHING about the products they sell(they're not just working there to get an employee discount on Playstation games).

It'll be there tomorrow - why do you need to stay up just to download a software update?

front row was updated like a week or 2 ago with the last updates.
it didn't do much of anything.... except now loading movie trailers doesn't take 10 minutes

Hi Steve.

So.

With all the minimalization of devices achieved and coming soon, I want a way to achieve bulletproof backward compatibility. I want an iPod dock like port that does the following from a dongle:

Ethernet 10/100/1000/10000
FW400
FW800/3200
USB 1/2/3
ADB/PS2/DB9
Composite Video/HDI/xx
and more

I realize the device itself will be a sphere or rectangulator with the wierdest surface ever. So price it at $299 retail and impress us with the interface driver. Dock it.

Rocketman

:)

Sounds cool for future laptops (mainly a docking station).
I would not think it would be pretty with today's laptop as they need to coonect via cables to the dock and let the dock have the full hub capabilities. With todays laptops and desktops you will have a maze of cable going to this device to make it serve it to the real devices.

There's not one single thing that works! I usually have a wi-fi printer (via AirPort Extreme base) and it doesn't work! hard drives won't work either.

I have a 24" iMac that is wireless and networking obviously works alright with it for network. It also does wireless Time Machine backup to an Xserve's firewire disk store, prints wireless, etc

I haven't had any of the wireless problems posted here, yet I have had other minor interface and UI problems with Leopard.

I would imagine, that it just appears to be a larger issue than it is. The whole loud minority thing comes to mind.

I don't think a genius at a genius bar is going to fix software bugs for you. Do I take my computer to him and say "There's a bug in the current version of Leopard... can you fix it for me?" Hahahahahahaha... you're funny.

considering not everyone has these problems it may not be a bug in leopard. or it could be something you downloaded. Or it is faulty hardware. 90% of the bugs people whine about I have no issues with on any of the 4 macs I put leopard on.

And actually, quite a few of the bugs they had temporary work arounds for like the aiport connection dropping out. If you sit on your balls and they that they hurt, good for you!

I totally agree, Apple complains about Vista's security warnings, in Leopard you have to allow putting an application into the applications folder, allow a video to be opened if its downloaded... its far worse than Tiger with regard to security!!

unless theres a button which i can turn off?

Yeah... thats the proof alright, you just blew the secret of Leopard security out the window.

All chipsets are "cheap" what computer maker would use an "expensive" chipset......

I like that.
