this nickel and dime-ing thing
APPLE has 1.80 Billion in the bank and no debt
they could afford to up QC in both the software and hardware, and give a few little extras or upgrades-and still have 1.75 billion in the bank and no debt

I notice a lot of talk here of Time Machine with people that have an iMac and a MacBook. My parents have the same setup, current base iMac with Leopard and the current Black MacBook with Leopard and an AEBS (Giga). They have an ext. hdd connected to the iMac with File Sharing turned on so the MacBook can use the drive for TM backups. The only problem is the drive never mounts automatically. Is anyone else having this issue? If so, what's a fix? Right now they click on Macintosh HD, double click on that drive so that it mounts on the desktop, and then it can start doing TM backups. Is there anyway to have it auto mount?

I know people have NDA agreements with Apple, but I hope this is fixed in 10.5.2. Any chance?

I have an external directly connected to my AEBS, and it will auto mount through the AirDisk Utility as soon as my wireless connects, granted the Airport Utility version is prior to what's out now. The newest version wouldn't auto mount that external. Mine is not used for TM since I use it for another purpose if anyone was wondering. I would like the same thing to happen for my parents if possible. I appreciate any help one can provide.

-Thanks

I had this problem before, and I think I solved it by deleting a preference file somewhere. Let's see... it might be /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

Try this: Delete plist file (better yet, move it somewhere else), mount the remote drive, open System Preferences/Time Machine, select the remote drive, quit System Preferences, eject the remote drive, and try a manual backup. The drive should mount automatically before backup and eject afterwards.

Spike Lightfoot, thanks for the tip. I'll have to try that next time I visit them. I will keep you posted if it works.

On another note, I know this is the seed before the current seed, but these screenshots look promising.

Hope it actually shows up, that would be great for those that have an AEBS + Ext HDD like myself. If not, I guess I'll just have to be an Apple Whore and get a Time Capsule.

I think you moved the decimal point, it's more like $18 billion. But I agree with you.

Manually mount the drives you would like to auto-mount. Open system preferences>Accounts>Click on your account name>Login Items. Drag the disks you mounted into the Login Items window. Whenever you restart your Mac, the disks will auto-mount every time.

And, sadly bring up a finder window with it.

wow

who cares about WOW, just a money, effort, time consuming with no life whatsoever game. I used to play it & didn't seem to sleep or eat right or go outside, it pretty much destroys your social life.
Just stop posting wow stuff its pointless.

I am kind of wondering if the no AEBS backups thing is due to the disk not spinning down (ie. no powersaving) when you hook a drive to it - I would bet that the new Time Capsule spins down and saves energy and disk life when it is not in use...Just a stab in the dark.
