Both problems have existed for a couple of years.

Jim

This issue is not solved. I am on 10.6.1 on Core Duo. It takes a long time to start the full animation.

Looks like a Friday release. Good stuff, my new MBA just came today...so I have been updating it from Leopard to SL (bought a closeout) and the remote disc install is taking FOREVER!

I'm hoping that some of the GPU performance regressions have been fixed with this update. I'm also experiencing degraded FireWire hard drive performance, although I suppose that I should be thankful that my hard drive works at all since I know that some are experiencing issues on that front.

Funny here you are looking for technical info but down below you claim the users aren't techs. You can't have it both ways.
Both ways of what? I'm afraid I don't see your point here. How does interest in technical data on the bug relate to Mac users not being technically oriented? Does Mac OSX run on fairy dust?

In which case the user should have backups.
The OS also shouldn't delete their data. Customers do have a reasonable expectation that their system software isn't working against them.

I'm not trying to imply that Apple is perfect here. What I'm saying is that once this patch update is out any screwups are the owners fault. If one doesn't keep your system current with the latest software patches you can't really blame Apple.
These is completely a situation where you can REALLY blame Apple. If it isn't, I'd love to hear your example case. You would have us believe that Apple has no responsibility for anything, because they can just issue a software update. If the update isn't installed or not available(like right now), too bad for the customer?

I especially have issues with iPod Touch users that won't spend five bucks for a major system update that fixes known security and reliabilty issues.
I have an issue with a company that charges for security updates.

Apple has one of the simplest update programs going, there should be an expectation that users will update their machine.
There should be an expectation that a billion dollar company doesn't ship software that deletes all the customers data. NO EXCUSE.

Something I've always wished we could do is make slipstreamed disks.
not that I'm a Windows fan, but I do like that I can make updated install disks.

Maybe that's necessary with Windows because between the time you reinstall the OS and then apply the updates the system gets infected. I'm no Windows expert but I have taken the trouble in the past to download all patches and updates before disconnecting the computer from the internet prior to a system reinstall. Wasn't my idea, I was warned.

Anyway, how much trouble is it to keep the latest OS X combo updater each time it comes out? I keep mine on my thumb drive.

To my knowledge, this is only an issue with Windows XP RTM, and Windows XP SP1. Anything newer is fine in the default configuration, although may be subject to attack in non-default until updates are installed. Updates should be installed prior to using Internet Explorer, because there are bugs there.

Trackpad in 64bit mode?

My trackpad doesn't accept fingered gestures in 64bit mode, has anyone else experienced this bug. Haven't noticed anyone talking about it on any forums, so I'm wondering if this is just a problem with my MBPro.
I'm using a 17" Unibody MBPro with 256 GB SSD and 8GB Ram.

If this is your first time posting it, then somebody else is also having that problem, because I read this sometime in the last 24 hours.

Firewire

Hmmm. Yeah that responses to this issue have been really mixed. But there is a definite group of people experiencing it. I guess we can't seem to put our fingers on what it is exactly. Not a single device mounts for me via firewire, including my FW800 WD My Book Studio, and none of the solutions I've scrounged up so far have worked. USB is fine though.

Here's a link to a thread on the apple support forums that has been dedicated to this issue:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2136580&start=0&tstart=0

Are you sure your Firewire port is working correctly? It may not be the OS. :/

But my interest has been piqued:

What is a "slipstreamed disc"?

This issue is not solved. I am on 10.6.1 on Core Duo. It takes a long time to start the full animation.

There is nothing to solve here. To start the animation, the site needs to download a bunch of data that takes time. The speed is dependent on your connection speed and the server load. Use something like menu meters that shows your connection throughput, there is data there to be downloaded and the browser waits for it.

Time to animation

I tried the test and here are my results:

I am on a Macbook (late 2007) 2.2ghz 2gig ram, 120gig hard drive.
OS: Mac OS 10.6.0, lastest Safari

It took 4 minutes and 42 seconds for the animation to start. However my fan did not get on CPU was a little high (20-30%) but not as high 50%

----

For those that are getting the web page to load fast with the animation, what is it that I am doing wrong that I have to wait? Could this be a bandwith problem?

You seem to be missing the entire point on this particular case. The thing is, you CANNOT apply the 10.6.2 patch without having to install the Snow Leopard 10.6.0 first, since 10.6.0 is on the retail DVD.

The issue with the data loss is when a user upgrades from 10.5 LEOPARD to 10.6 SNOW LEOPARD, the data loss may occur. If you've only got a 10.6.0 Install DVD, you have no choice BUT to use that version, as there is no physical way to put the 10.6.2 patch on before.

Alright. I ignored your first few ignorant rants, but now I've had enough of your ridiculous FUD. Everything I've read about this bug says that it's only reproducible under *very* specific circumstances. You have to log into a guest account and then log back into your regular account, with some kind of preexisting corruption or permissions issue.

So a 100% reliable method of avoiding it during an upgrade is already known: don't log into a guest account and back into your regular account *during an upgrade from 10.6.0 to 10.6.2* for some totally bizarre reason. If you want to play it extra safe, make sure guest accounts are disabled until 10.6.2 is installed.

Yeah, it's a nasty bug for the handful of people who experienced it. Fixing it obviously needs to be a top priority. Apple acknowledged that about 10 days ago and a fix is coming in a few more days.

But no, that's not good enough for you. Even though you have no rational explanation of why Apple should incur massive losses by pulling *all* 10.6.0 retail disks, you won't be happy unless they do.

You need to take a deep breath and get a little perspective on this. No one is dying or in any physical danger here. A few people have suffered catastrophic data loss, and that sucks. But now we all know exactly how to avoid it: don't do something you would probably never do anyway. Hardly sounds like a crisis to me.

And if you know something I don't and you believe this bug is more widespread and/or not specifically triggered by using guest accounts, please post a link so we can all learn more about it.

Both problems don’t exist on my computer. Snow Leopard 10.6.1. They seemed to have been fixed.

Can anyone confirm if the 10.6.2 update fixes the backlit and white balance issues concerning 9cc2. displays in current 13" MBPs?

Meh, do you guys really think the update will be out as early as tomorrow? Is it even reasonable to expect that, since the latest seed only got seeded to developers today?

Massive losses? Hardly.

The discs should be pulled because they are dangerous, and any respectable company would be horrified about leaving copies of their product in circulation that can destroy a customers data.

Video game companies have recalled their entire product runs for much less. Apple has a lot to learn about the toy business.

With Windows, you can take an install disc, and apply any combination of service packs, updates, hotfixes, etc., and then burn it back to a new disc. When you install from the new disc, all the items you 'slipstreamed' are already installed. It is very convenient for businesses that want to have certain drivers or patches already installed.

Not tomorrow but quite possibly on Friday since the seed is only on the magic mouse. If not Friday than most likely Tuesday since during the weekends the Developers get a break lol.

Yes, Apple is responsible. They've taken responsibility, publicly. They've fixed the problem. The fix is on the way. In the meantime, it's trivial to avoid the problem: don't use guest accounts.

I have an issue with a company that charges for security updates.
Are you seriously calling iPhone OS 3.0, a major update with 100 new features and massively increased browser speed, a security update??? Man, I hope you're getting paid to write this stuff.

There should be an expectation that a billion dollar company doesn't ship software that deletes all the customers data. NO EXCUSE.

Ahhh, now it all makes sense. You're confusing Apple with Danger.
