Hello!
I'm considering moving from Windows to Mac, but I saw that Apple will launch a new OS. I wonder if I buy a mac now, the update for the snow leopard will be free (just like how Microsoft did when it launched Vista).

Sorry if something isn't write properly. I'm from Portugal  ...

No.

Q3 or After - It's not expected before July-August. There's been no indication from the seed release dates/cycle that they're gearing towards going Gold Master, so it's likely at least 3 months away. WWDC is only a fortnight away, and the demonstration that Apple gives (and also the details of a very likely new seed being given to developers there, and ADC members soon after) will likely help clarify this a little.

I hope that info is wrong!! I like the date June 8th! Wikipedia says June 8th, and Apple.com's announcement page says...'scheduled to ship in about a year'! And Wikipedia is always right, right! :D

All Wikipedia says is that Snow Leopard is expected to be demonstrated during WWDC, a far cry from having a shipping product.

Sept/Oct. is "about a year," certainly the way Apple tells time.

você pode querer considerar antes de comprar Windows 7 ao novo computador.

MR will probably be next if people keep posting screen captures.

DAMNiatx's aside, the rest on the thread are covered elsewhere, and linked accordingly. We're going to see much more interesting material we'd all hope in a fortnight or so. Apple news sites linked the videos, but hosted their own pictures/screen captures.

im really annoyed that i missed those videos. were they any good ?
what is that stacks thing like. ive always thought that should happen...

New mac incentives

My decision just got made for me because Apple has announced that they are giving a $229 rebate (for purchase of iPod Touch) with concurrent purchase of a new mac computer. You just have to be a student.

It's actually valid for faculty and staff too. The fine print on the Apple site reads:

"college student or a faculty or staff member at any grade level"

I was just thinking today about a few things I'd love to see improved in SL.

Safari/Internet- needs some work in this area. would be nice if they pulled some strings with Adobe to get a new version of Flash that runs better on Macs. Also, the trouble some people have with WiFi need to be addressed and Safari 4 needs to be completely developed to be as stable and rich as Firefox.

Quicktime - Would love if they added many more Codecs to Quicktime X. (is there any way apple can cut a deal with Microsoft so they can add the WMV codec to QTX? :D)

Safari 4 is still in the beta stage right now. There does seem to be a long period of time between the builds. I don't know if there will be a second beta or if Apple will go to the final build next. It doesn't look like Safari 4 will get extensions like Firefox, so it won't be as rich as Firefox but it'll still be faster than Firefox. It looks like Chrome4Mac and Firefox will be the only browsers with extensions support for the Mac this year.

Adobe is historically bad with their flash players on Macs. Nothing Apple can do unless Adobe open-source flash completely and Apple develops their own flash player using GC/OpenCL.

MS already gave out the codec to QT via Flip4Mac Plugin, granted up to a certain version.

I actually think MS should give all the codecs to QTX too because Windows 7 will now play .mov formats without any extra codec or plugins.

Would be a very nice addition to Snow Leopard and Apple could use this point as leverage to get the codecs. (i can see MS just removing support for .mov. lol)

Final Cut Pro

9to5mac article - Final Cut Pro Studio 3 to allow realtime editing of 1080P H.264 video?

They're hearing that you'll be able to edit full 1080P HD video in realtime. No more rendering. No specifics, just that GPU will be pulling its weight through OpenCL. "OpenCL takes that power [of the GPU] and redirects it for general-purpose computing."

"You are probably going to need a pretty hardcore rig to take advantage of this speed as well. Don't expect to pull a 2 year old iMac out and edit HD video on the fly."

yeah this is kinda sucky... i want to jump on a new mac given the back to school offer, but i don't want to have to pay $150 for snow leopard when it comes out 1-2 months after i purchase my mac...

hopefully they don't run out of ipod touches before june 8th cause i think that wwdc will provide some new information about updates/snow leopard.

If it were me, I would want to buy before SL is released. Given that all new OS's require an update or two to become really stable, I would prefer to have Leopard as a fallback option. It's a bit more cost, but look on it as insurance for a stable OS experience. So you get a Mac + iPod now, you get to use both for 3-4 months at least before SL is released, and maybe another 4-5 months before you need to make the switch from Leopard.

Apple may start offering the Upgrade Program at WWDC. That's just a week away, you can wait til then and see what's happens.

As for SL, are you a student? Can pick one up for 10$ at a school bookstore or 70$ edu discount.

I just searched Snow Leopard on Youtube and sorted by date uploaded. There are tons of videos of the beta. But very disappointing. All the visual changes so far are very minimal and could have easily been implemented in a 10.5.X update.

I know Snow Leopard is more about under the hood stuff rather than visual changes, but in the videos it didn't seem much faster. He opened iTunes and it took like 4 bounces, then delay, then open. I dunno, that doesn't seem faster. This was after fresh install too.

When they say it's going to be faster, it needs to be faster for everyday use, not just high end stuff. Else only a small % of people will ever know about it. Things like FireFox need to be faster, I know it's not Apple's fault that it takes FireFox 10+ bounces to bloody load, but on Windows it's almost instant. Same with Microsoft office and Adobe products. They take 30+ seconds to load up on fresh macs...

I really don't care about features as long as Snow Leopard is drastically faster with everything - not just high end stuff that barely anyone will notice / care about.

SL isn't even in beta stage. We have no idea how far SL is in development, just wait and see till a beta or RC builds comes out.

iTunes didn't get any changes in SL lately. They were just focusing on kernel changes and the APIs for it. I think recently they just started working on Finder.
