Does any one know how much more hard drive space you get when upgrading?? Do files take up less space, or does the system stuff just take up less space?
Both the system stuff and the built-in applications are smaller. How much hard drive space is regained is unknown right now - this will probably be announced at WWDC, though.

I know Snow Leopard is mainly a featureless upgrade and is focussing on performance enhancements, but I am surprised there are not any speculation/threads about what might happen at WWDC like there are for the iphone.

Dont get me wrong I'm not expecting Apple to backtrack on over a years worth of work, but I just thought people might be guessing at surprising new features?

It's not all that featureless.
QuickTime X with screen recording and minor video editing is something new. And if ZFS makes it into the final, that'll be gr8 as well! Furthermore the Finder has new stuff, better M$ Exchange support....
Many OS updates are not that feature rich. Usually it's stuff under the hood, accompanied by new supported extras (like new API's, new hardware, better security etc.).

TBO, if Open CL and Grand Central really gets used by new apps like FCS 3, IMHO this OS update could be Apple's gr8-est ever.
Same goes for the server OS :)

Agreed on all your points, i am just quite surprised at the lack of posts about what might happen at WWDC, perhaps because I am more of a mac person than an iPhone person....at the moment

Yes, I know that's why I mentioned the Developer Preview. I was thinking there would be a minor seed to make sure everything is working before they would release the final one.

They say final Developer Preview, it may not mean the final seed. They could easily release more seeds afterward but I do not know the development cycle at Apple well and the history of Apple's seeding program. Have they ever release a seed again after a final developer copy?

I'm definitely more of a Mac-person than an iPhone-person!
I love my iPhone, but I love my Macs more... ;)

But, it's true there is not much speculation about 10.6. But, because of the Developer Builds which are also "not-so-legally" downloaded, screenshots and new features are on the web instantly. And usually, these builds simply are examples of the OS in development, so hardly any real surprises once the GM is deployed.
However, sometimes Apple does keep a trick or two up it's sleeve during development to show on stage at a WWDC.
I remember Mac OS X DP 2, and then came a WWDC and "Aqua" was shown for the first time.... then came Mac OS X DP 3 with the Aqua.... That was ever so cool.

So, there is hope a GUI change is on it's way (i.e. "Marble"). Or, maybe something else....
It's just that such a "something else" should be tested by developers too... In other words, if Steve shows major new features, then the developer seeding will probably go on for a few months yet before the GM is done.

Evidence for WWDC Developer seed?

I was looking on my 10A354 install disc today, and had a quick look at the icon for the 10.6 installer. I opened the package, and found it looks a bit like this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/38976210@N04/3591912922/

It says 'Developer Preview 2009' on. In previous builds, they just carried forward the Leopard install icon. This is something new.

Of course, it could just be to indicate it's a 10.6 Dev Preview from '09, but since there have been several, I think it may indicate something else.

Thoughts?

They are just prepping the installer to be used for the DP at WWDC. It does not mean that 10a354 is the DP, I doubt it since all the devs already have it anyway and it misses about a month and a half of progress. I think the new WWDC DP would be around 10a4xx.

Feel free to speculate and discuss here! I'd join in, but I'm on holiday :)
Apple can do a lot with harnessed GPU and GCD.
I'd expect Apple to have their programs (semi) optimised on top of the changes known so far. Apple has been quite forward in it's aims for Snow Leopard - we'll see a lot of thm in action in a few days, along with some great iPhone news.
The Developer Preview new seed at WWDC I'd wager will look & contain several new things.

Hell i'm beginning to think Apple may cut bait and make their next Pro apps (Final Cut Suite, Logic Studio, Aperture) 64-bit Snow Leopard only apps. If they can deliver upgrades that wow then those with PPC computers (in need of replacement soon) would complain but many would bit the bullet and hop on the 64-bit train.

We'll see next week when these Pro apps are rumored to be demoed or announced at WWDC.

Complaining would come from a lot more than just PPC users. Many people don't plan to move to Snow Leopard right away, if ever, and would resent being forced to.

Not to mention the original Intel Core Duos are 32bit only.

If the SL versions of Pro Apps offers more than 50% performance increase because of SL, I think developers will be more than happy to put out for the SL upgrade because they'll break even on the costs immediately.

Just because a new version of Apple's pro software would only run under Snow Leopard doesn't mean people would be "forced" to upgrade. They could simply use the current technology instead of going forward with new technology.

****'em

I have an original Core Duo Mac.

The processor sits in a socket that can be replaced and I've got a 2Ghz C2D proc just waiting to slot in.

If Mac customers don't understand the significance of Snow Leopard then they deserve to be left behind. It's the perfect transition OS.

32-bit to 64-bit
Carbon to Cocoa
PPC to X86

My hope is that Apple has a reduced pricing for Snow Leopard because of the lack of "bling" but truth is for me the stability of OS X and functionality has improved and I'm not looking forward to waiting for the cheap or the lazy to upgrade (those who are stuck behind because of apps they "must" run are excluded)

Whatever pricing is set forth, you can rest assured that it will be way more reasonable with less restrictions than Windows 7.

I will be really curious about how much space is gained, thus creating an improvement in Overall OS and Application improvement, also with the newer Graphics Cards, especially the Discrete Card in the Unibody MBP how Snow is going to take advantage of the CPU and GPU for performance, if I could squeeze just a little more performance out of my 2009 Mini and 2009 uMB 2.4 I would love that.

C'Mon Steve Whatcha Gunna Throw at Us Dis Time

Front page rumor - feature complete build at WWDC.
I Still think the rough graphic we saw about 3 major builds as potentially holding true. Current one being pre feature complete ten the WWDC Buoild showing all te features then maybe a cycle of fast build to then a final build near Gold Master.

Key Build 1 was the finalized API seed (Core Component Update) 10a354/355.

Key Build 2 will be the WWDC Final DP Copy (Feature Complete).

Key Build 3 is the GM Build that'll release in the months of July to Early August (Final Candidate).

It all matches up. Which means Apple really is further in progress than we know and they are on the right track and it should be ready before the end of Summer possibly making Sept 1st, 2009 the release of SL.

That chart was shown in a March 31 AppleInsider article. So there haven't been any schedule changes since then?

That's where I got the image from and no, no schedule changes that I am aware of though. They could've changed it internally and didn't leak it but as far as the current schedule, everything seems to be matching up as i stated.

being newish to osx are the current macbook pors 64-bit capable

also what kind of performance increase would i see on a 2.4Ghz C2D with 2gb ddr3 ram in SL compared to leopard now

i have a question that didn't get answered in another thread: what does the A in 10A380 stand for? alpha?

also, i think we see this puppy 1-2 weeks before labor day, and if not, november.
