I think they eluded at WWDC that they were "pretty happy" with the way it was. (which boggles the mind).

I'd give my left testicle for a file "cut & paste".

That's not the way I saw it. I think they intended Finder to be exactly the same way with same GUI just changed to Cocoa in Snow Leopard to possibly revamp the GUI for 10.7. SL wasn't suppose to receive a GUI change and they probably want the whole GUI change to be much noticeable for 10.7. A clean codebase is a must before thinking about adding more features and a new GUI.

That's the feeling I got from them at the WWDC.

Remember they want all the new technologies to be done and get it out asap to developers, but they aren't doing it just for devs, they are doing it for themselves as well.

I consider 10.6 as phase 1 for an overall OS revamp with 10.7 being the second phase of including all the GUI stuff, front end type of stuff that Leopard had.

Do any of the apps on the Installer DVD use OpenCL? I'm curious to know what kind of performance increase it might provide.
The only app that I think would benefit is iLife and that won't come out for a while. It's way too early to start seeing either GCD/OpenCL optimized applications. I suggest you come back in one year to ask that question.

(Mail does use GCD for now in case you wondering about GCD)

I can see why they don't do "cut n paste" in the finder. It's easy to copy something to the clipboard and then forget it's there.
So what? Let it be forgotten on the clipboard. The original file will still happily remain intact (as it does in the Windows OS).

I'd like an easy way to have a two paned window in the finder where I can simply control drag files and folders to the proper location. Accomplishes pretty much the same thing as cutting and pasting.

So just allow file "cut and paste" into the finder and be done with it.

The Finder is what it is.
Right. Its file management scheme sucks. Nobody will convince me that dragging and dropping a file in OSX in order to move it is easier then a selecting few menu commands (which are already there BTW).

Where does 10.7 come into this? I was responding to somebody who was asking about major enhancements for the finder in SL 10.6 (Or so I thought).

Nobody from Apple has said anything about major Finder enhancements in 10.7 have they?

Read what MikhailT wrote again.

The point of Snow Leopard is not to introduce new features to the UI or applications. It is to clean up the code base and provide new core technologies that will allow the OS to be enhanced in the future. Part of that future is 10.7.

The Finder is being rewritten in Cocoa with pretty much the same feature set it has now.

It's Cocoa now and should be a bit faster when copying files and other things. What other features are you looking for?

1) Cut and paste. I have to open the Finder in the Doc AND open the Mac HD drive on my desktop when I want to move stuff around between folders now. It's ridiculous.

2) Ability to have different file views for different folders. ( like having thumbnails show for my Pictures folder, but List view for my Music folder). When I change a view in 1 folder, it changes everything else.

3) To have different folders have different sizes. For some reason my windows keep snapping back to these small ass windows that I have to resize to see everything.

4) If I had a file with the same name to a folder, it should automatically create a *(1) file instead of asking me if I want to overwrite the file. Comes in handing when I'm not tracking my RAW files properly.

1. Doesn't bother me, but I understand your point. Either way, you still have to find and open the destination folder to paste the file in anyway.

2. You can. Hit cmd-J to show the view options for the window and check "This window only". That view should stay for that window always.

3. If you're using single window mode, the window size will not change. However, other than that, my window sizes stay the way I set them.

4. That would be annoying to be moving files and not realize you have duplicates.

1) If I C&P, I can stay in one window. Sometimes I get confused on what Window I'm in
2) Thanks for the tip. Didn't know that
3) Single window mode?
4) Not really, because sometimes I just need to move files and get back to them later when I have time. Would work great for my RAW files and school work for grad school (especially when people are sharing multiple documents - but that's another story on why people don't use colloboration tools and having to default to the least experienced user to get work done)

and I'll had number 5:
5) Stop making things go "poof" if I accidentally drag something from the sidebar. Give me a "confirm delete" pop up at least. Apply this to the Dock as well.

1. You CAN copy and paste files. You just can't cut them. If you're trying to duplicate a file in the same window, just hit cmd-D or option-drag the file.

3. If you're using the metallic windows and browsing through folders, you'll notice that the window size isn't going to change unless you change it. Then when you close that window and start over, it will be the size of the FIRST window you opened. Understand? So basically, whatever window size you start browsing from will be the size it will stay.

4. Just make a new folder or duplicate the files. When you duplicate a file, it will add " copy" to the file name. There's nothing wrong with the current Finder regarding this.

5. Stop dragging stuff out of the Sidebar/Dock. Obviously if you're taking the time to drag it out, you want it gone. Do you click so fast that you're actually dragging files?

Fact is. Mac OS X is different and you'll just have to get used to the way it works. I personally don't want it to behave like Windows. Except for the new "Put Back" feature in the trash. I always wondered why Apple never offered that.

I noticed that the Fonts in 10.6 are different compared to 10.5. They're not really smooth anymore. This can be especially noticed in iTunes.

I actually like them less bold. Possibly better antialising will be required or maybe larger font size.

I know! That's what I said.

Geezus... some of you people are daft.

Daft? Maybe you are the daft one. You wrote:

MikhailT wrote what he wrote to explain that the Finder is staying pretty much the way it is now not because they are happy with it. But because SL is not an enhancement release.

Yep, daft....

I don't think it's a font change but most likely the anti-aliasing is different in SL. They changed the anti-aliasing setting to on/off instead of multiple settings. I bet if SL's AA was set to Strong, it'll look like what it did back in Leopard.

I was wondering if there was any app on the Installer DVD that simply demonstrated the use of OpenCL.

That would be nice but there isn't any on the Installer at this moment as far as I am aware.

OpenCL is pretty hard to demonstrate with some simple code as it is meant to offload work off to GPU, which means we need a comparison or a benchmark. x264 encoding benchmark might be worth trying out but so far there isn't any software that'll take advantage of OpenCL yet.

I didn't say it! These are in effect Serlet's words at WWDC!

So I guess when Serlet says, "We actually love the finder so we did not change it"... he is talking out his arsehole. (Funny cause I swear his lips are moving).

Read what he said exactly as a context, "We actually love the way it is in Snow Leopard ...so we did not change it at least in the interface."

Emphasis on the italics. He said they love the way it is ..in SL. Which is not the same thing as saying "we love the finder". They are happy and love the progress they made with Finder in Snow Leopard. Finder is very smooth and stable in Snow leopard, even I love it compared to my experience in Tiger and Leopard. The tone of his voice and the way he said "at least in the interface" to me suggests they are planning to change the interface in the future or it could mean nothing. I could be totally wrong, who knows what Serlet is trying to say, it could go the way you said or the way I suggested. We'll know when 10.7 comes out.

Yes i know, "at least in the interface" makes sense for him to say because the only thing they changed was the actual code base of Finder and noting for the GUI.

They changed the Finder's UI a little bit.

Likely to have another seed tomorrow? Seems Apple's on it's weekly seed update cycle at the moment, prior to going silent for a month or so...

Yea the darker highlight rows, the size slider and many very minor tweaks.. Still with crappy aqua scrollbars.

They have a new "small size" variation to the buttons in the Finder windows now. Also, they centered the back and forward arrows vertically (finally).

After boot with bootcamp partition with windows 7, i restart to boot snow leopard, and this loading appeared. What is? It takes more than 5 minutes.

hibernate? and how i can "hibernate"¿? its not a laptop

It looks like a firmware updating screen to me and not hibernate. Did you download any firmware lately and not yet rebooted so that it can update?

Is that really what they intended? I thought that was a bug, because of the way the Menu also show up as tiny, almost unreadable. It's fugly.
