Ok, for those wanting to stick there neck out -
we've got an iPod event, the Touch will be getting updated right around the Zune HD launch, Snow Leopard is only weeks away, and iTablet rumours are flying around.

So what's your guess that Snow Leopard will be available in (Apple) shops?

Will it be before the iPod event, or after? Will we see iPods, Touchs and 10.6 before TomTom can get their act together for their notsousefulifyouhaveacoveronyouriPhone/Touch dock and SatNav app?

Likely iPod event dates - Tuesday September 1st, 8th, or 15th.

6:00pm on Friday the 25th. No event, just released for sale.

iPod+iTunes Special Event on the 8th.

18 or so days after the last seed, I'd say the fast cycle of seed releases has finished - which i'd say meant a pretty final seed in 14 days or so, with it unlikely to get a new seed till then. Agree? Disagree?

Edit - as OllyW points out:
Tiger was released - Last Friday of April 2005
Leopard was released - Last Friday of October 2007

We don't know if the seed releases has stopped, as you well know that the last 3-4 seeds were easy to get since it was released over the software update. Anybody can get it and everybody will know it's out. It's the complete seed image that we won't know right away. It may takes several weeks til we find out some info about it since the whole seed image may not be accessible for those WWDC devs, the WWDC seed was the final dev preview which meant they are not going to access for any complete seed after 10a421a if Apple moves to the next stage of development.

I agree that the SL will be released on the last Friday of Sept. That's Apple normal release schedule for major OS X releases. It gives them a whole month to do everything they can to make sure the launch is a major success.

I still think SL hasn't hit GM yet, they may have RC available now but they are going to take the whole month of August to test it through and finish up everything, it is possible we won't get any leak at all. It is easy for Apple to close the numbers of testers to this specific by kicking out all WWDC devs and restrict it to top ADC premier devs which i doubt leaks anything.

UPDATE: Look like I am wrong, It may have just hit the GM with the build number of 10A432 which means there may not be any major changes at all from 10A421a.
...multiple tips claiming that Mac OS X Snow Leopard has reached "Gold Master" status..... The build number of the Gold Master is reportedly 10A432, compared to the last known developer seed (Build 10A421a) released over two weeks ago.

Sorry to be a bit off topic but i thought i would post this here rather then start a new thread:

After much searching i found the link for the $14.95 SL upgrade link for Australians who have recently purchased a mac. I may have just been really stupid and missed it but it took me a while to find so i thought i would post it here for anyone else who is looking. http://www.apple.com/au/macosx/uptodate/

This.

When Apple gives a month, it's always the last possible date in that month. OS X upgrades are always out on Fridays.

I'm now moving my prediction for the iPod event to the 15th since we've seen the leaked date for the Zune HD.

Apple would love to have all the attention that day.

Since Apple said that Snow Leopard is going to be released in September, does that mean NEXT Summer? Being an iPhone user, I'm uncertain what September means to Apple anymore.

Apple was missing deadlines long before the iPhone.

Yes, I know :) My question was has this actually been seeded to developers? They were calling 10A432 the possible name for GM, and that it was possibly GM, not being definite about it.

Edit - looks like it's coming as a download from the ADC site and install it from fersh on a partition, as opposed to via Software Update says GearLive. iTunes not yet getting updated, so that's likely not happening till the iPod event.

AI details some of the changes in 10.6 installation:

Some of the changes and enhancements to the Snow Leopard installation process are as follows:
Although Rosetta and Quicktime 7 are both included on the Mac OS X 10.6 installation DVD, both are designated as optional installs by default. However, if Mac OS X 10.6 is being installed on a Mac that contains a registration a key for Quicktime 7 Pro, the installer will install Quicktime 7 automatically.

Options to "Erase and Install" and "Archive and Install" are no longer present in the Mac OS X 10.6 installer. According to those familiar with the software, this was done for convenience, so that users do not accidentally erase and install their Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard partitions. However, "Erase and Install" remains available through Disk Utility, which is also included on the installation DVD.

If you need to reinstall 10.6, it automatically archives and installs for you.

A reinstallation will not affect your Mac OS X version number. In other words, reinstallation of Mac OS X 10.6 on a Mac that contains Mac OS X 10.6.1 (when it becomes available) will not overwrite any new components delivered by 10.6.1. So when the re-install is complete, you will still be running Mac OS X 10.6.1. This will save users considerable time.

There is no "Previous System" folder at the root level after reinstalling.

If a power outage occurs, installation will pick up from where it left off.

To prevent the Blue Screen error that plagued some users when upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5, a software compatibility check is included that has a list of known "bad" apps, and disables them. Those programs are moved to an "Incompatible Software" folder.

Unlike Mac OS X 10.5, you cannot install Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on computers where the hard drive reports a S.M.A.R.T. failure.

Installation initially triggers a large chunk of data to be copied from the installation DVD to the user's primary hard drive. The bulk of the installation is then managed from the hard drive, speeding up the installation process considerably. After a successful installation, that large chunk of data is automatically removed.

two more questions regarding the mac box pack.

1. does anyone anticipate a delay between snow leopard's release and the snow leopard box pack? if there is, i think there are going to be alot of unhappy tiger users out there...

2. what will the snow leopard in the box pack have that the $29 version will not?

1) There won't be a delay or there shouldn't be. It doesn't take that much to produce a CD and put it in a box. Apple will be producing millions of those things in ahead for the retail launch.

2) 29$ is an upgrade disc, it may not allow you to install to a blank drive or a partition that doesn't have Leopard on it. We are still unsure of what the final options will be. The full box is full retail copy that'll let you do whatever you want.

What if Gruber is right? It's the last date of the month. But what if it's August 28th? His short & sweet post here
Snow Leopard Goes GM - What I’m hearing is that it went GM last Friday and could be on sale by Friday August 28.

As Siegler notes, here:
August 28 is also just two weeks from this Friday, so if Apple is really going to launch it then, expect some kind of press release in the next few days.

Does the GM version also first need a Leopard install before you can continue or is the GM version just like the previous builds who don't need a Leopard install?

Interesting fact. Last GM release, from Leopard, was on Oct 16, and it was released Oct 26 ONLY 10 DAYS LATER.

This is a sign that this MIGHT NOT be the GM build.

Hey, guys. Sorry to bother with a question that probably has already been answered. I've converted to Macs about a year ago and I've never experienced this system transition. I'm eagerly waiting for Snow Leopard and I'll get it as soon as it's out, but I'd like to know something: what if I want to do a clean install but I still want to keep my applications? Is there a way to do it?

No, you'll have to do an Upgrade or an Archive and Install if you want to keep any Apps.
