Leopard vs Snow Leopard on older Macs...

Hi! I'm new here. Sorry if this seems like a stupid question.
I have two computers. An old Emac that runs Power PC and a MacBook that is Intel Processor powered.
I would like to upgrade my "Tiger" as cheaply and efficiently as possible.
After reading about Snow Leopard, I think my options are limited and the best I could do would be to purchase "Leopard" and install it in both computers, and then purchase a Snow Leopard upgrade for my MacBook. Does that sound right? If I do that, do you foresee any conflicts between the two computers when they 'sync' things like my iCal and Mail etc?
Hope you can help!
Thanks for any info.

I don't know if this is a dumb question, but no one seems to have asked it. Will they have enough copies of SL?

if i pre-ordered snow leopard aug 24th, will it arrive by aug 28th or ship aug 28th?

Depends where you ordered it from. If you ordered from Apple then you will receive it on the 28th. You must pre-order by the 26th.

Pre-order, but the up to date order might be shipping on the 28th, rather than receive (at least what I got told today).
Maybe worth checking the https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/772528/ thread for more.

Should you wait for 10.6.1 ? AppleBlog gives a view:

Reasons:
  • It’s a Point 0 Release - not liking the bugs that will get fixed some point after release. "Some [bugs] could make your Mac virtually unusable, while others will be merely annoying". An example given being the "prevalence of software-based kernel panics in Snow Leopard"
  • Your Programs May Not Work Properly - Compatability issues. "Programs not designed for Intel-based Macs are the most likely candidates for problems." - If it's your primary work machine, and you can't have any potential downtime, it's on your own head to update.
  • Hardware Could Fail, and Fail Hard - A point about AppleTalk and "trusty" laser printers. Palm Pilot/Palm-based phone support not supported (but remember didn't stop their support and Apple had to pick up on that? - If your still using them, get some 3rd party software, and wait for it to get compatible.)
  • Lack of Support by Vendors - I'd imagine that this will be less of an issue. I'd imagine most support don't want to see silly being behind for long. Mac folk are expectant folk, and hopefully support's brains won't "explode right then and there". Supoprt might blame 10.6 - but i'd imagine users will expect better from both Apple and the manufacturer.
  • He's Cheap, like "even $10 is an unneeded expense" cheap.
His last point? Probably the most useful -
  • Why mess with something that’s working well? Does your system work? Are you afraid of change and risk? YMMV.

Ordering it today

If I order it today from Apple, when would I get it? Will it arrive on Friday, or ship on Friday?

If I order it today from Amazon, when would I get it?

You just missed the deadline to order it by wed for delivery on friday. If you order before Wed, it would arrive on friday.

Amazon depends on if you have Prime or not, I preordered at Amazon for 25$ and it'll arrive next Monday via Prime 2nd day delivery. If no Prime, probably less than a week from Friday. Apple probably same as Amazon, less than a week.

can somebody tell me in how many computers will I be able to install Snow Leopard (single user)?
I believe it should be just 1, but i'm not sure because when i bought Leopard, I installed it in many computers.

thanks

You're not supposed to, but we can't stop you.

I preordered Snow Leopard from Amazon, and I got 1 day shipping with it. The delivery estimate is said to be August 31st.

Tiger -> Snow Leopard
As Acurafan points out - Mossberg says that Apple's saying the Snow Leopard retail disc will let Tiger users update directly as far as I can initially make out (though those on Tiger less likely to get as much gain from Snow Leopard as those with more recent Leopard Macs). macfanboy picks this up in this thread

You guys think they'll start selling Snow Leopard at 6PM?

I hope the line at the Apple store in fifth avenue in New York City aren't too long.

in gizmodo's review, it says, "OpenCL APIs for utilizing the processing power in any graphics cards above the GeForce 8600 Series for video acceleration and general purpose computing".

i have a early '08 penryn macbook pro with a 8600 gt graphics card. so my graphics card won't be any good for video acceleration and such?

Noooo:mad:.

From the OpenCL tech brief:

OpenCL Technology Brief said:
Also works with the CPU
OpenCL is able to efficiently use multicore CPUs, which allows systems without an OpenCL-capable GPU to benefit from its capabilities.

That said, an 8600M will work according to the SL technology page, but even if it didn't OpenCL would still be able to run, albeit slowly.

Snow Leopard Technical Specifications said:
OpenCL
requires one of the following graphics cards or graphics processors:

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, Quadro FX5600
ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870

NZ Version will ship from Aussie but always gets deliverd next day (if coming from Aussie overnight)

Recieved my shipped email this afternoon so am expecting it around lunch time tomorrow :)

So, it might have already been answered (somewhere in 43 pages of posts that I am sure my boss wouldn't appreciate me trawling through..), but my question is:

If I buy a MacBook Pro from the apple store tomorrow (28th):D, will it ship with SL?

Beautiful.
Note to wife: When my new shiny toy arrives, I won't be capable of focusing on much else for a while...
