Yeah you choose what card you want in the Energy Saver preferences. You have to log out to make it work though. Kinda goofy if you ask me.

Ah.

I thought OS X did that automatically. Can you do it manually?
You select either "Better battery life" (integrated GPU) or "Higher Performance" (discrete GPU)

Then you have to log out and in for the change to take effect so the discrete GPU can be turned on or off:

Hello from Amazon.com.

We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed on August 05 2009:

"Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopard"
Estimated arrival date: September 02 2009 - September 04 2009

Arrrrgggh.
Probably just gonna go to the actual Apple store and pick a copy up and cancel the order.

Apple says it'll "deliver by August 28th." That means you get it on the 28th. I can't find it anymore (maybe it was in the cart section), but I read that ordering by Wednesday guarantees you'll get it on the 28th.

I think that is an error - it says Ships: delivers on 28th Aug. I think it should be saying Ships 28th Aug like the other sites. There's no way they can guarantee a delivery date to everyone in this way

my bad you are correct
just looked at my confirmation email and it says

How long will my order take?

We estimate your order to be shipped by By August 28th.
We expect your order will arrive by post to your shipping address on or before .

:)

quick q while i'm here, if i do a full time machine backup before i do a clean insstall will i just be able to put photoshop back in from time machine or will i need to reinstall ps from the install disc?

I also think this is a misunderstanding. the on or before doesn't refer to the 28th August. I reckon it should say something like 'we expect our order will arrive by post to your shipping address on 2nd September or before'

Sure they can... they have done it before.

Conclusion
I like Snow Leopard, and found moving back to Leopard quite surprisingly painful. Was it really so slow? It didn't feel so a week ago. There's some controversy about how "64-bit" this upgrade really is. I have no complaints about compatibility, and 10.6 promises to be a much smoother upgrade than going from 10.4 to 10.5. Leopard proved to be an excellent release in the end, but many people experienced driver issues and other gotchas.

By setting expectations low for its successor, and with a price to match, I'm sure a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised. If performance matters, it could be $29/£25 very well spent. Too bad G4 and G5 hold-outs don't get their own optimised version - they need it the most.

7 Best features Update routes ComputerWorld Zdnet -
To be honest, Macs are pretty speedy as it is. The improvements seem great for geeks and, to be honest, I’m probably going to upgrade my own Mac. But for the average classroom app? The exception, obviously, is with the new accessibility features. For visually-impaired students in particular, Snow Leopard may be actually worth buying a Mac, let alone upgrading an existing machine.

Did Thurrott ever do more than Part 1 of Windows 7 vs 10.6?

Ordered SL yesterday but I am now having second thoughts...

There isnt much of a change but the added speed of shut down and start up on my macbook is going to be well received. But, my point is: Is the price right for what we are getting? And, couldnt this be completed in an update via a Software Update...

A new kernel (32 and 64-bit)
OpenCL and Grand Central frameworks
Quicktime X
Exchange support and optimizations everywhere aren't something you push over an update.

I don't know how someone has second thoughts over a $29 upgrade that brings so much. Hell my dinner alone last night cost me $21.

I agree. When I pre-ordered my iPhone 3GS, it said "Ships: Delivered by June 19." That's the day I received it from Fed-Ex. I don't see why it won't be the same with SL on Aug 28.

Hello
I have a Macbook C2D 2,2GHZ (santa rosa, late 2007) with 4GB Ram.
Does anybody knows (has tested it with a pre release or something) if there will be a big difference in speed if I upgrade mac from Leopard to Snow Leopard on a machine like mine?

This doubt is the only thing that keeps me from buying the upgrade for now. I guess If first would like to wait and see what people with a comparative system are experiencing and then see if the upgrade is worth it (even if it's only 29€).

Snow Leopard & antimalware?

OS checking pkg and dmg files?

The first report came from the Intego blog, (they make Mac antivirus software) and it's been corroborated by Snow Leopard testers over at the MacRumors forums [this thread]. We'll try to test this one out as best we can, but it's looking like Apple may have slipped this ever-so-slightly unflattering feature into their new OS under the radar.

Details from Apple on Snow Leopard

Security: Apple has devoted an entire page of its Snow Leopard site to highlighting security features of Mac OS X, from "sandboxing" programs to limit the damage malicious software can cause and anti-phishing features in Safari to password strength assessment and parental controls. A report today is also pointing to an apparent antivirus feature built into Snow Leopard, and while MacRumors first received reports of this feature after developer build 10A261 was released in February, no further details of the feature have been unearthed.

Guess we'll be seeing some video from Apple in 3 days time.

Regarding GPU-accelerated video playback, does QuickTime X use more than just the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M GPU?

Snow Leopard app compatability
Check out http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ - there are also 2 decent threads - one showing compatability, one incompatability in the forum. (Awaiting confirmation about a Snow Leopard specific Tricks, Hints etc thread).

OpenCL tutorial http://www.macresearch.org/opencl_episode1 - 228MB (not a fan of QT on a webpage, easier to download in background imo) Dr Gohara from Washinton University School of Medicine, Center for Computational Biology (iGotchi on twitter) a "tutorial series [that] will hopefully help getting many of you acquainted with the technology and what it can do. Instead of doing text tutorials, I've decided to present these as video tutorials.
Real world example around 34 min - WWDC talk demo, real world code - APBS - evaluating electrostatic properties of biological molecules (ratinonal drug design, protein protein interactions etc).
Using 1 core of a Mac Pro - 57 sec
Using 16 threads with a Mac Pro - 4 sec
Using GPU GTX 285 - 0.18 sec (getting the exact same results)
Edit: 57 seconds to 180 milliseconds. For some things, OpenCL is a big thing. The example is a 20x improvement or more.
So GM is Build 10A432? Front page

theres many pages on this thread... not sure if my question is posted yet but here goes.

well i just got my uMBP last week from best buy.... was wondering how i can get SL for the $9.95 price?

Just to update - John Siracusa got back to a question - His Snow Leopard review will be out on Monday afahk (it's already done and submitted).

xUKHCx has started a new Hints & Tips thread specifically for Snow Leopard here. Still waiting for an email about Up to Date from Apple :| (Shipping on 28th via Royal Mail over a courier most likely). Anyone know if UK stores will have SL in for the open in the morning, or have to wait till 6pm/next day?

Stores will have it at 9AM. UTD is not available at stores though. My order for the retail version went to prepared for shipment last night, hopefully Royal Mail don't strike in the next couple of days!

Not to be an arse, but 0.18s is 180 milliseconds. Still very impressive numbers, its a shame that none of my Macs have the required GFX card for OpenCL. :(

Fixed. The need for an interface for desktops and laptops fast enough and with enough bandwidth. The tutorial touches on what the bandwidth issue causes for the GPU. You get something fast enough, and you could outsource the OpenCL to a box/device outside of the computer.
