Which one should I buy?

I'm still quite new to Macs so please excuse my ignorance hehe.

I have an iMAC with Tiger on it. I would like to get Snow Leopard. Is buying the Box set with ilife etc enough? Or I still need to buy something else to have it working?

Thanks

No worries :)
You might want to wait a day or two and you'll get confirmation about going straight from Tiger to Snow Leopard (using the retail disc). It should get you running with Snow Leopard. The bundle gets you iLife 09 if you want it.The Tiger to SNow Leopard story has legs. You'll get your answer http://gizmodo.com/5346546/mossberg-recommends-illegal-use-of-snow-leopard-install-disc

can i install snow leopard on a new hd for the mac?
or do I have to have tiger on it first?

nvm yes u can

You should probably start with 10.0, then upgrade to 10.1, and then 10.2 Jaguar. After Jaguar is installed, you should do an archive-and-install of Panther (just to be safe), then upgrade to 10.4 Tiger (make sure you run software update to update to 10.4.11 first... this is important). Then all that is left is upgrading to Leopard and installing Snow Leopard on top of that.

That's the best way to go if you want the best possible system.

If you want the cleanest install just format and drop in 10.6

Does anyone know if they are having a release party at Apple retail locations like they have had for previous versions? If so, does anyone know what time/day?

There was no specific mention of time in the PR release, so it will come out when the store opens on Friday morning. I've even called a few Apple stores and they said it will be available first thing in the morning.

if i pre-ordered snow leopard aug 24th, will it arrive by aug 28th or ship aug 28th?

Depends where you ordered it from. If you ordered from Apple then you will receive it on the 28th. You must pre-order by the 26th.

If you pre-ordered it on Aug 26, 2009 at 11:50 AM PDT, it's currently 'Prepared for Shipment.' Any one know how up-to-date the Order details are? Any odds of it being sent out today and me geting it tomorrow?! It also says 'Ships: Delivers on Aug 28th.'

i pre-ordered it on June 16th and it says "Not Yet Shipped" ... BARF.

Can someone confirm - If you want to use Office 2004 for Mac, you need a custom install of Rosetta?

Yeah, mine was Up to Date on June 8th or so - only just changed (the up to date page status checker was down earlier). Now changed to shipping imminently.

Peering into some security parts of Snow Leopard here

Compatible software
Apple's About Incompatible Software list. See also the Snow Leopard wikidot list

Summary

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard is designed to protect your Mac from certain incompatible software that can quit unexpectedly or cause other issues in Mac OS X v10.6.

When you install Snow Leopard or migrate to Snow Leopard, known-incompatible software is moved to a folder named Incompatible Software on your hard drive.

Snow Leopard also prevents known-incompatible software from opening. If you see an "Incompatible software" message, contact the software's vendor or visit their website for a later, compatible version.

10.7 thread - What dya think?

Anyone seeing a speed difference between Clean Install and upgrade? Saw http://twitter.com/techAU's tweet on it and wondering...

Folks,

I'm new to Mac OS and got a question here.
Bought a MBA and it comes with iLife few months ago. Now I'm thinking of getting the upgrade version Snow Leopard. If I'm to install the SL upgrade version, will the iLife still remain in my system?
Or I need to get to box version?

Thanks.

ILife is on the discs you got with the MBA. If you clean install just use te app disc to install it again.

Just picked up my copy from Myer. Funnily enough the guy behind the counter said he was sure they'd sell out of copies today (They only received the cds at 9am this morning too).

Anyway... picked up the family pack, installation only took about 45 minutes. All my applications are still working fine with the exception of ClamXav. Didn't do a clean install of Leopard first but tidied things up a bit before.

Those wanting to retain Quicktime 7 and the pro settings can just reinstall it. It's in the Optional Software folder on the install disc.

Actually ended up saving 10GB on my hard drive from the install. :D:D
