well, for anyone else who tried that XiSO torrent on a whim of hope or whatever, and got the cute lil picture, - did any of your computers stop working worth crap after that? cause now my stupid pc will restart itself every time it gets past the stupid Windows 200 Pro screen... and no im not a pc dude, im typin on my G5.

I hope it becomes available. The ilife apps that come with the system is enough for a lot of people. If this came true I would go install it on my mom's PC as her mac is no longer hers and she misses it somewhat. I'm tired of having to field questions about various error boxes. A simplified version os OSX to run on PC would breath new life on old PC boxes.

yeah it contained a virus, not sure what it dose, i booted it QEMU, i'd suggest everyone elce dose the same if you think you have a real version (use virtual pc or QEMU, the latter is free)

Although I also can't wait to try and install it on my PC, I fear it wouldn't really be usable for your mom. Sound and ethernet will probably not work. And video will probably run terribly slow in vesa mode, if at all.

I'm sure later releases of/updates for OS X for Intel Pre-Release will support the full range of ATI and nVidia graphics cards (since they write the drivers for Apple) long before the final release that won't run on standard hardware because game developers need them.

Who said anything about the video? Even when she had itunes she never once used it, so sound isnt' that important. In fact her PC isn't even hooked up to speakers. Ethernet would be a problem cause she likes email, and by likes I mean she checks it once a month if I remind her. I wonder why she even has cable internet.

There won't be any more releases. You only need one build to test on.

What kind of BS is that? You're making a statement of fact, not opinion, so bless us with some source for this information. A year+ is a long time.

T1, that's so '90s! :D

I am so lucky to be in Japan were we have very fast ADSL (up to 45Mbps) and FTTH (100Mbps) options. :p ;)

Sorry, little bit off topic... I thought your speeds were average until I noticed the 'm'... You get 100 MEGABIT per second connections ?!?! I'm part of a broadband LAN network, but I coz I chose the cheapest subscription it runs at 56kbps (but occasionally 33kbps...) Ahh well - Bulldog broadband's 4Mb connection will be in the new student house in August :D

Anyway, just so I have a reason for posting... Could anyone see Apple "accidently" (read 'deliberately') releasing some part of OSX x86 that PC techies could manipulate to work on other boxes as a form of viral marketing? I have no idea what could be done- it's just something I've wondered...

You know, all these reports of people seeing that picture are especially funny, since it's been so often stated on this board that Mac users won't be vulnerable to trojans since they aren't as gullible as Windows users :D

When Apple seeds developer builds, the generally do not release updates. Especially for something like this. When OS X was an Alpha, there were only three builds I think over a two year period. They had to be released because the design was to go to beta, then GM, etc.

OS X for intel is past beta. It is ready for GM. The reason for the build to develpers is for them to have systems to prepare, and compile their software for. That is the point that he was making.

Ati and Nvidia might release drivers early for game developers and they might circulate on BT as well. But I think you're right on the no updates from Apple part.

And i thought my 15 mbps verizon Fios line was real good :)

It's only $49 a month though, so i'm not complaining. :p
Ouch!

My friend had FTTH for $40 per month. Install charges were steep at the time -- about $400.

Now install charges are usually waved but the monthly fee is a bit more.

Can you say DL System 9.2.1 update (83MB) in 8-9 seconds?

:D :D :D

Yep. FTTH (Fiber To The Home) is 100 Megabit per second. So for private installations to a home, or apartment, you can get this.

Also, many new apartment buildings are serviced with single/multiple fiber type cable which connects to a switch type device that provides around around 40-45Mbps bandwidth to each apartment in the building. This seems to be the new standard for current apartment construction in the Kanto Plain area.

The reason that I mentioned the bandwidth in the first place, is that if the Mac OS X for x86 ever gets out on the net, it will be DL'ed all over the place. I am sure tha the NDA's are very specific in this case. Additionally, I would not be surprised if each version is coded for the specific developer, or at least hard coded with individual serial numbers if you will.

Apple will do everything they can to keep X for x86 from being released into the wild.

um guys theres no such thing as "OSX for intel" steve said that OSX itself was processor independent therefore theres no special version for intel, you could run any OSX on pc probably, people just havent been aware of the possibility. there may be builds for developers but no special intel only version.

OSX the current shipping version doubtfully has been enabled to run on Intel. Apple has enabled that ability at cupertino for their uses only.

Mac OS X Tiger for x86 Intel - Leaked Rumors Dispelled - and more....

Hello everyone!

I am writing to you all to dispell some rumor and information floating around about Mac OS X Tiger for x86 Intel platforms being leaked on the internet.

First off, I was one of the developers that attended the conference. I received my developers kit yesterday and have had at it since I opened the package.

1) The kit has NOT been leaked to the internet - at least not as of today (6/18/05). Anyone who has been boasting that they have it have been lying through their teeth or posting grand Photoshop desktop shots. Up until yesterday I have searched EVERY IRC pirate channel, newsgroup, torrent sites, and P2P app that I could find. YES There are some that say they have it, but they are hoaxes and junk. I cannot say that it will not happen, as I am sure someone will put themselves at risk by uploading the x86 discs / DVD up on the internet. I will tell you all, I will NOT be one of them, so do not even waste your time asking.

2) The kit will NOT run on AMD based systems - I dumped it on my AMD system for giggles and got nothing but errors, instability, and crashes.

3) The Intel kit will work on Intel hardware only, and has support for nVidia and ATI cards. As for network, unless it is an Intel network port, it will not work. USB Keyboard and mouse are required, and you have to use the native OS X drivers for the mouse and keyboard, you cannot install the support software at all - obviously they are not written to work on Intel architecture. Printers, scanners, and other devices of the such do not work; so basically you need a 100% Intel board with the onboard Intel graphics or an nVidia or ATI card and you have a running unit. Anything else causes severe slowness, system instability, or it just won't plain work at all. I am sure someone will post a 'hacked' version eventually, so all you folks out there hoping to score a copy that will work with everything, do not get your hopes up for while.

4) Steve Jobs has already publically stated that the current plan is that the Intel hardware will contain an encrypted chip that will only allow the OS to run on Mac Intel hardware. The OS would have to sustain major hacking to get around this software security. I also read a post out there from some bozo claiming he wrote a BIOS bootloder to fool the OS into thinking it was an Intel BIOS - full of $h** he is. First off he doesn't have it to do that to, and second of all, you can't fool this build At least no one knows how to yet.

Just thought this might help everyone - feel free to spread this post to other boards.

Thanks! I've been waiting days for reading such a post. This was what I wanted to know.

what AMD cpu did you use? not until the San Diego and venice cores did AMD have SSE3 so that may be the issue.

if it dose not work on my athlon i'll probably end up selling and buying a P4.

One of the points for switching to Intel was that it was going to be cheaper for the us. How is being stuck with one brand make this cheaper for us, the consumer?
Will these requirements be changed when it's finally ready for prime time?

it will be cheaper because apple can buy more powerful processors for less money from intel. As of now there will be no Mac Clones. Maybe once apple has its full lineup switched over to intel hardware and everything is running smoothly, then it will consider it's options as far as letting a company like dell sell computers with OS X.

edit: as far as compatibility with other hardware, I believe the deal is the same - if a company wants their vid card to be OS X compatible then they just have to write the drivers. Now that the rest of the hardware is similar to Windows hardware that may be a much easier job.

Thank you for posting and clearing up a few things in my mind at least. I had figured that they'd not bother to create drivers for PS2. But it's interesting that they may have also removed or simply not have ported some of the other drivers as well. Like the one for NICs based on the realtek 8139, since it's used by so many cards (ex. Dlink DFE 530TX).... *shrug* They'll be there in ship time. Hopefully.

Do you by chance know if the board uses a discrete ethernet controller? *crosses fingers* I've wanted EtherExpress Pro support for some time.

With regards to the AMD situation, I'd most likely get the same thing if I removed all support for legacy Intel stuff and compiled the Linux Kernel as for an AMD based system. Especially if I were to run it on older hardware. I figured that the Build would be built for the Dev Units in such a way as to make them not work well with other chipsets and/or non-Intel/SSE1,2, and 3 supporting CPUs. I wonder if you'd notice the same behavior on a 440BX board running a PII.

4) Steve Jobs has already publically stated that the current plan is that the Intel hardware will contain an encrypted chip that will only allow the OS to run on Mac Intel hardware. It's amazing how people watch the keynote and somehow miss/ignore? where it's stated that it'll only run on Macs. It's almost certain there would be in something in hardware facilitating this as well as hooks in the software. I'm guessing Intel's LaGrande technology, which as far as I know isn't even complete yet. What makes the bozo funny is that the restrictions on what the Developer Edition will run on is most likely because of drivers, and perhaps SSE3 support. Noone has broken the lock that locks the Retail version to Shipping Intel Macs, because it does not exist yet.

Sardopsycho.

Thank you for adding some signal to the noise.

Yeah, all the releases are indeed hoaxes. One version I had ended up just displaying the ****** picture and nothing else.

whats the point? if you want osx that bad, spend 70 or so dollars and get a cheap imac.

I need a high performance workstation and I need Linux and Windows on it but I love to use OS X. Leaked OS X would be the only choice for me until Apple releases the new Intel PowerMacs. I cannot afford an extra $6000 workstation just for being able to use OS X.

What sort of high performance work do you wish to accomplish? If the OS X stuff you need is simple you may as well add a Mac mini or iMac G5 to your high performance PC workstation setup.
