I'm totally hoping for a Leopard release on the 24th.

My Dad wants a 24 inch iMac but I told him to wait for Leopard so he told me to tell him when Leopard comes out so he can finally go ahead and get a Mac. Well Apple has be all TOP-SECRET with their release date so it's a guessing game as to when they will release Leopard. All I know is it will be released before June but that's a while from now.

Im hoping too, but somehow it seems unlikely, maybe a release date will be given by then, that would be good too, atleast wed know when we could all go out and buy our new macs.

Sorry, your history doesn't support you contention. Vista is a re-write. Just because it's big doesn't mean it is in any way the same tangled mess of Windows 98 or XP because it isn't revision n of the same old OS.

Vista is a big bloated pig, but not in the way way that past MS OSes were.

Vista is also a slick OS when given enough physical resources. Vista has been met with luke-warm response so far but I suspect it will be the must have after SP1 later this year. Under all that useless eye-candy there are a lot of solid under-the-hood features that we plan to use, like significantly improved User Directory syncing and root-less terminal server windows, just like in xWindow.

Oh, almost forgot.. I'll think of that "rock solid and proven foundation" the next time my Network stack or Finder hang my machine up. Just because the foundation is solid.. that doesn't mean the wall don't have cracks.

ffakr.

Vista wasnt a rewrite. You cant rewrite 60m lines of code in a 5 year time span let alone the 2 year time span that MS alledges. Rather, they rewrote some things, such as the network stack.

Wasn't there some rumor that they would release it on march 23rd for some weird reason? whatever happened to that?

Apple has never said anything of the sort ^ The rumour sites have so far said:

January (after Macworld)
February
March
End of March
April
May
June

Its honestly quite ridiculous how people buy into it.

rather than..

Hi guys, rather than when it will come out, I'm more concerned about the price leopard will have. Will there be different versions like for windows xp (home and professional with different prices?). I'm a newbie, be patient :p

mac os x has always been sold as one package. no home premium/basic or ultimate versions to worry about. there has been speculation in these forums whether leopard would include ilife, justifying an increase to the usual $129. but no one knows what's going to happen with leopard, and no one really will until apple fills us in.

Not quite correct. There is also OS X Server. If you want to be pedantic it could be argues that the family pack represents a third option. :D

However the choice is less confusing than what MicroSoft has chosen to present the market.

And from what I've heard and read, the network stack rewrite wasn't necessarily a good thing. Several old vulnerabilities we re-introduced in the new stack. MS has since patched it, but the potential is there for a whole new series of vulnerabilities to be found.

Everyone knows it is going to be next Tuesday. :D

Frankly I was expecting it to be the end of April, but that was back in August. If that were true we really should have seen something more from Apple on the subject by now.

I heard of something about OSes being release at the 24ths of the month, except for Panther ( the online version was released at the 23rd ). I'm really hoping that it releases end of March.

Plus, it would sound better if they said they accomplished a new OS within less than a year ( technically ).

What about the single use pack @ $129 and the family pack @ $199?

This friend of mine was very certain it would be the 23rd because of some weird reason regarding the 23 and past releases of important soft-/hardware. I don't remember exactly what it was, but he seemed really sure. I myself am a bit hesitant because to me it doesn't make much sense (especially because 3/23 is a Friday) and I never read anything like that here. Did anyone else hear about this rumor?

my b-day is on the 22nd, i ll call Steve and see if he decided to just release it on that day as a gift to me... :D

the only thing that would be released by the end of march is a release date and the "top secret" programs they are including in leopard...thats pretty much what i've gotten from reading other posts

I, unfortunately am with you on this one...

For those waiting for Leopard to buy their first Mac (or a badly needed upgrade):

Unless the $129 (or so) is really a big deal for you, I wouldn't wait for that reason alone. Why? Because the first version of each major Mac OS release has always been fairly buggy. E.g. with 10.4.0, there were quite a few major problems - even basic things like dialup didn't work well. While I'm sure that there were many users who didn't have major problems with 10.4.0, there were quite a few users who regretted upgrading early.

I waited till about 10.4.2 or .3, even though I really wanted some of the new features, and I was glad I did.

Based on history, 10.5.0 will most likely have similar significant issues that won't turn up until the mass testing that results from general release.

So, if you want to be guaranteed a stable system when you buy your new Mac, then you are going to have a longer wait than till the initial leopard release - you'll most likely have to wait 2 or 3 months longer till the bugs settle down.

Waiting for new hardware is another matter entirely - we're expecting hardware refreshes on many models soon, and that's what I'm hoping for. If it happens to come with Leopard installed, I'll probably just immediately clone my old Tiger system to it, and upgrade to Leopard after it's more stable. Of course, no one really knows when the new hardware is coming, so it all depends how important getting a new computer is.
