I doubt Software Update will deliver 10.5.1 for a few weeks.

Actually, if Leopard does in fact ship on October 26th, I'll bet you'll see 10.5.1 around very early November. Its not uncommon for Apple to get a piece of software/hardware released and then immediately release a update to the product.

Mac OS 10.4.1 was released on May 16th and 10.4.0 was released on April 26th. If I remember correctly, they started working 10.4.1 as soon as they declared Tiger golden master. Meaning, they got the OS out and then utilized software update to update the bugs they didn't want to hold back the OS release date with in the 10.4.1 update. I'm expecting Apple to do the same with 10.5 in the 10.5.1 update.

No I don't. What was wrong? Please refresh our memory.

If you had a external FW hard drive connected and installed Panther on your internal drive, it would corrupt the firmware on the external hard drive rendering it useless. Third-party manufactures had to rush out updated firmware as well as Apple releasing 10.3.1.

Also there was the 10.2.8 update which fried ethernet ports after installation. 10.2.8 Update 2 came shortly afterwards. There was also a 10.2.9 update but that was only reserved for shipping models of what was then the new G5 Tower. It wasn't available as software update for existing users.

Ahhh, I remember this well. And since then, my OS update process always invovles a complete backup of the data on my old system to two separate backup drives. Only one these gets attached to the machine after the OS update. The 2nd backup stays 'air gapped' from the new system for a few weeks until the dust has settled and any 10.3-esque issues have been shaken out.

The adage "there are two sorts of people - those that have already had a system crash and lost their data, and those that are going to" is particularly relevant at OS upgrade time.

BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP !

And let's not forget the SCSI bug in 10.0 (beta or release, can't remember) - I had a 9gb external SCSI drive connected during installation, and it quit about 5 minutes after the post-install reboot, and never worked again on any machine.

Unless its already finished, as the latest torrent releases claim...

I sure hope it's finished! I'd love to see 'em get it out this month! I believe I'm more excited about Leopard than I was when Tiger was released.

And for the record, I didn't have any significant issues with 10.4.0. Had an issue with Safari crashing and Finder crashing when I emptied the trash occasionally, but that's the only issues I can remember having.

CD Burning didn't work in 10.0.

IE took 15 dock bounces to launch on a good day, but was the only free web browser available.

Those were the days!

Apple said:
Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple recommends you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive manufacturer for more information.
Scary stuff indeed.

I used 10.4.0 and had no issues, to be honest 10.4.0 was more stable than 10.4.whatever came loaded on my intel iMac and 10.4.10 Intel.
I remember 10.4.0 on my iMac G5. It was such a stable and fast operating system.

I noticed that.

I feel pretty confident in saying its finished enough to be released if in fact there was an internal GM candidate going around. I wouldn't be surprised if its available for pre-order on Monday or Tuesday. Lets all hope! Been a long time waiting....

I could see it being announced early this week. Apple needs to promote something on their website. iPods are off the main page, Al Gore is probably on the main page for the weekend. It just looks sooooo plain and boring. Can't wait. Hope they announce a new MacPro with Leopard.
