cover flow and quicklook work very well- except it took me a while to figure out pressing the space bar activates quick look. Everything works pretty well (I did an upgrade). It took around 35-40 minutes.

Everything was upgraded as is. Everything is still in tact (pfewf!)

Someone open up Disk Utility and attempt to verify permissions. Mine does not seem to be working.

I quit Disk Utility and this is showing up under the processes. Any ideas?

Unfortunately my first impressions will have to wait until Monday because my stupid university store won't have it until then. Ugh!

Apparently it takes significantly longer than in Tiger and it's not actually broken. Can't verify this myself though because I won't be home to install for another 40 minutes.

Just saw a shooting star!!!

(in time machine!)
(yeh i was starring at it for quite a while. And Yeh, i'd better go out and talk to some people :))

All installed (upgraded) on my black Macbook Duo 2.0 with 1gb ram. Install was smooth, but I do miss the detailed information going by as it installs (just says "Installing Mac OS X on volume 'blah'" and has a progress bar and time remaining, no other feedback) but I can live.

After the initial boot, things seem snappier, Safari (and most of the other apple apps) open much quicker for me. No issues with my software etc (so far...).

Lots of the features are nice, but haven't yet gotten to really play with all of it as it's only been installed for an hour tops.

Major iCal 3.0 Gripe: They have gotten rid of the "info drawer" that used to slide out on the right side. There is now sort of an "info bubble" that pops up when you double click (or apple-i) an event. However, I use the "notes" section of the events very heavily, and now there is basically no way of having the notes "stay open" (ex. in the old ver. leaving the info drawer open all the time) or even adding/viewing notes now without 2+ mouse clicks. BTW if anyone has better ideas or comments about this I'm all ears, as I will admit I’m really disappointed with the lack of ability to quick glance at the entire event info.

All in all, “Sweet” I’m sure there will be more issues etc, but I’m liking it.

Interesting how the Firewall changed location from the "sharing" options to "security" options in the preferences. Took me a while to find it, but I did. :) All those gamers out there who need to open specific ports, well there you go.

Arrived at 3:30PM. Was in such a tiny box - I was expecting the same size of box as Tiger.

Popped the disc in, restarted and did an Archive and Install. After just over an hour, I was ready to boot up in Leopard for the first time. It had retained all my settings, dock icons, size, aswell as all my bookmarks etc.

So far, all Applications have run without needing reinstalling - and I was amazed to see games like Football Manager 2008 ran without needing reinstalled or a patch to work on Leopard. Fantastic stuff!

The new Finder is awesome too - I love using Cover Flow and Quick Look.

However, I've found it not to be as snappy as I was hoping - Core Animation seems to struggle on my Santa Rosa MBP. Applications like iPhoto load a lot quicker than Tiger, but still not almost instantly. I wish they would give you the option to specify a default Finder window size and lock it to that. I hate having to resize my Finder windows so they are all the same size etc..!

With Cover Flow also - there is a sense of sluggishness. Such as when you open a folder for the first time and it is generating the thumbnails, the scrolling is sluggish. And it takes a while to generate the thumbnails.

Bit disappointing, but can't expect it to work right away I guess. Quick View has a same issue, there is a significant delay between pressing space bar and the preview (if it is something like a movie) loading. Word documents get previewed instantly.

Also, I have extreme troubles accessing my Air Disk - it is no longer found on the desktop but on the Side Bar under your router name. It works, and then doesn't. I can open my router's server (if you look on the screenshots, mine is called Reason). It tries to connect, I don't get a dialog saying it can't but it never connects. So I can't access my data. Anyone else with that problem?

That was the small negatives I had - overall I love it! The Finder is so sexy and slick, and it looks and feels so nice. I urge you all to upgrade!

I posted another thread on this. Same thing here....takes a long time, but does eventually finish after about 5 mins.

for those who already installed...

what sort of backup or other pre-install steps did you take? or does the leopard install promtp you to do so/do it for you?

i'm on my first mac and tiger was installed, so i'm curious about what happens in this new world of installing OS X.

I used superduper to clone to a USB drive. Then I did an upgrade on the USB drive. It is extremely stable and I am going to install it on my PowerBook (1.67 HR) and my MacBook 2.16 (White) when I get home.

awesome, thanks.
i shall look into this superduper. it copies everything - files, apps, etc?

hmm...do you mean you installed leopard on the USB drive? i guess i don't know how that works.

Well, it wont find any of my Windows shares (Which is bad, considering my File Server with my backups runs Windows) but I managed to manually get it to connect. Copying stuff over now after erase and install.

So far so good, after that.

Yeah. Once you use superduper it "blesses" the USB drive. The computer that I used it a production machine here at work so it wasn't something that I wanted to be buggy and not be able to run once the upgrade was done. I went the safe route and left my internal HD untouched with Tiger on it and upgraded the clone of my machine. I have had the Leopard DVD since 10:30 and been running Leopard since 12. It is now 3:20 and I am about to call it a day and I have only found 1 problem and that was with a little used piece of software that Fuji makes for our Plate rip system.

New Install on Macbook Pro 2.16 Ghz w/ 1.5GB Ram @ 7200RPM HDD

Ok... Whew... where to begin.

Lots of stuff here...

Overall, I like it. However, I must say that I am more than a touch UNDERWHELMED by the upgrade overall. There are many nice *touches*, but they seemed to have come at the expense of the overall customizability of Tiger.

PLEASE NOTE I HAVE NEVER PLAYED WITH A BETA, SO THIS IS TRULY MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH 10.5.

Ok... now, on to the good, the bad, and the ugly.

First, The Good:

1) New 3D Dock. Very Nice. Love the 512x512 Icon Resolution.
2) Cover flow Finder. Sometimes. When you need it, it's really cool.
3) Overall seems 10-20% faster and snappier than Tiger.
4) Safari 3 is niiiice.
5) Resizable Dock is great (via grabbing onto the "highway marker" on the dock)
6) Calendar is much nicer.

Next, The Bad:

1) Stacks is not implemented well at all. I lose functionality I loved in Tiger. E.g., If I placed my Hard Drive icon in the right hand portion of the Dock in Tiger, I could right click on it, and it was a Mac version of the "Start" menu in Windows. Easy to get to my apps, etc. Now, if I drag it in there it is turned into a "Stack" with no way to get it to stop. The stack only shows the first 6 items on my Macbook Pro (would be more useful on a 30" display), unless it's in "Block" mode.

2) Mail is giving me fits. Maybe it's a server outage, but I can't send from my .mac account. Hmmm.

3) The new finder. Maybe I'm just not used to it... but it's a bit trickier to get around.

And finally, the UGLY.

1) That transparent menu bar is HORRRRRIBLE! TURN IT OFF, TURN IT OFF, TURN IT OFF! YUCK!

2) The large block font Apple is using for the entire O/S seems very un-apple... and I'm not a fan. I liked Tigers system "fontification" much more!

3) Ugh... those ugly "Folder" icons throughout the O/S. Wow. To me, it's just NOT attractive... very LINUX/UNIX looking. NOT attractive at all.
Ok... thats my first Hour review...

I know this is a little off topic but I was just wondering what everyones thought are on the release of a revised MacBook. I know you're all sick to death of hearing this but Im dying to buy my MacBook and if its likely that a new one will be here in say a week or two then I'll wait but I was just wondering.
And I don't mean a subnotebook btw, just a speed bump.
Leopard looks the don, should be brilliant ;)
Thanks

excellent.
it didn't occur to me that the backup would be bootable from the external drive, but that makes perfect sense.

thanks!

I just finished installing Leopard. I went with the "Erase and Install" option. So far, so good! I love, love, love the new dock look & System Preferences icon... haha. I haven't had a chance to look around at all of the new features and apps, though. Will probably start doing that after my late lunch. I'll post another reply with more details afterwards! You might also be able to find more information at my blog.

Ok, just finished upgrading. Here are my thoughts:

Pros

Spaces is awesome. It's almost like I have a second display. I put my (parallels) windows desktop in the second space and it works like a champ.

Coverflow - I thought this feature would be superfluous eye candy just like windows flip 3d is. Boy was I wrong! Not having to launch apps to view files in the finder is a real time saver.

Spoltlight searches are now instantaneous. Much faster than searches in Tiger

Overall gui responsiveness is much faster in Leopard than Tiger on my mac pro.

All of my apps worked off the bat except inquisitor and google earth.
Google earth worked again after I updated it.

Cons: (might just be my mac not a prob with leopard itself)

My movies widget does not work. Says invalid zip code. Granted I had this problem with this widget when I downloaded it from the web a couple months back. Anyone know how to reinstall just this one widget?

itunes album art screen saver shows all the album art with a pinkish-purplish hue on them. Don't know why this is.

If I want to do a clean install, how do I properly back up my iphoto library and itunes playlists? The reason I upgraded instead of a clean install n the first place is beacuse I did not know how to back these things up properly.
