Clean Install on Mac Pro

It wanted a wired mouse though, no bluetooth on initial startup. Luckily I have a wired mouse, which got me past that hurdle.

Probably about 30 minutes from start to finish. But all seems to work.

Disk space - whoa

On my PowerBook with 60 GB drive I did a clean install of Leopard. Then, I installed:

- The developer tools
- Bundled apps, which include iLife 05 and OmniStuff
- Office 2004
- Myst IV

Also, I restored my backups (14 GB). But only got 11 GB left now  with Tiger, I had quite some more space left even with apps installed.

Doesn't really matter though, I have everything I need now. And it works great.

Sorry for the slightly n00b-ish question, but...

If I used SuperDuper to clone my HDD (Tiger), and put this disk image on my external, and then upgrade to Leopard on my internal, if I don't like/it fails, can I then just use Disk Util (running from my Restore DVD) to restore my hard drive using the external HDD image?

Cheers, Karl.

Overall Neutral

Well two of four Macs are upgraded or more correctly archived and installed as both had blue screens when I tried the "upgrade" Leopard is faster certainly. Dock animation not as good. Printer configuration improved so it's only done through System Preferences as print Utility appears to be gone. Spaces consumes less memory than the You Desktops product I used to use. Ambivalent on all the grey, Tiger had more pizazz. Rosetta apps like Office work fine. .Mac syncing produced a slew of conflicts that never existed before

Overall I'm neutral. Speed is nice but will soon be unnoticed. New layouts are fine but new skills are going to be developed for managing windows and such. VMWare Fusion update makes Fusion work again. Had to reinstall Parallels to make it work and had to reenter serial numbers for pro apps. Poor upgrade performance and need for A&I was very disappointing in a flagship offering.

No problems at all - fantastic!

I thought I'd take the opportunity of a new OS to do a full clear down of my Mac Pro as it's had loads and loads of different apps, dev tools, drivers, etc on it over the last year or so. Before I did this though I did an upgrade to see how it would work. Everything went without a hitch and it took about 45 minutes. Everything I had on my machine worked without a problem and Time Machine even recognised my 2TB iSCSI SAN partition and offered to use it for Time Machine backups.
It went so well that I was tempted to leave it alone but I decided to stick to my original plan and levelled the machine and did a clean install. Again, no problems whatsoever and everything "just works".
All in all a fantastic experience and well worth queuing up for yesterday. To make things even better, Google have just enabled IMAP on my Google Apps account (after waiting all week) so I get to use it with the new mail.app :)

In case I haven't made this clear enough: Leopard rocks big time :)

Some more impressions:

An app I'm making uses NSViewAnimation for some stuff. The animations seem to be a lot smoother. No hiccups. Also, the view transitions in System Preferences are very smooth now, which wasn't always the case with Tiger (G4 btw).

Leopard apps seem to require more screen space. I now tend to open quite some programs - like Finder, and Interface Builder - semi-fullscreen on my 12", and even then I often feel like I'm short on space. I only had this to a lesser extend with Tiger.

I love Spaces and Front Row.

My backup is still restoring, so Mail, iCal, and iTunes are still on the to-do list.

Having a mouse with buttons you can program is great. I have my mouse controlling iTunes, Dashboard and Spaces. And i only have 6 extra buttons on my mouse.

CPU and Memory management is much better. I stay idle at 99% to 100% wehn not rendering or doing any major tasks.

I don't care for the transparent dock actually, kinda annoying.

Finder is a bit too easy to allow access to everything. Say if someone happens to get on your system, it's much easier to locate things without going directly into spotlight.

Stacks is kinda dumb. Looks more cluttered than crap on your desktop.

I have yet to get an external hard drive.

i wish VNC would work without leopard. I have Vine VNC on my G4, the Finder sees this but won't allow me to access my G4. So i'm stuck using ChickenoftheVNC.

^^ what mouse?

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-930763-0403-MX500-Optical-Mouse/dp/B00006HZ0K

I love this mouse. i've tried so many and they all just don't compare. The wireless version isn't too good.

The buttons on the side control the volume, the up and down on the top control next/prev song, the pages button controls dashboard, and pressing the scroll wheel controls spaces.

I use SizzlingKeys to control iTunes.

I also found the mouse for a cheaper price online. I have two, one at home and one at work.

Maybe it's just me, but I find it helpful that people list what mac they are using when they post feedback on Leopard? Maybe everyone can do that?

got mine today installed with no problems, running an early intel imac.
front row is far better than before, mail looks good, like the new dock.
but the new folder icons are awful! also seeing the spinning beach ball alot although time machine is still backing up so hopefully that's why.

overall I like it alot now if only Nov 9th would hurry up!!!!!

Anybody figure out the network issues? On "Tiger" all my other computers (2 XP Machines) showed up automatically since they were shared internally on the network. Now I have to use "CMD+K" to insert the IP Address (Must be SMB) to mount the computer. Works fine as long as you do not reboot. But got to be a better way....

Bill.....:(

Yeah, I've been having network issues on my Powerbook G4 (1.5 GHz, PPC), too.

After a clean install, connecting to my mac mini's shares (still on Tiger) doesn't work at all through the finder. I can only mount the AFS shares by using the "Connect to Server" menu item and popping in the IP address. Even after that, I noticed that my network file transfer speed was super slow.

It's annoying to say the least, considering that's where my backup is.

Yes....but it shouldn't fail...and the super duper image can be used by migration assistant to port things back....

EyeTv+Leopard

Anyone else having issues with EyeTv with Leopard and using the Apple Remote?? I know it says El Gato is working on compatability issues but it's really annoying!!!

What issues in particular, nothing happens when i use my apple remote and eyeTV. Also when I have it in fullscreen in another space and switch to it the screen is black and I have to click on it to see the picture.

Everything's fine except wireless afp file sharing...

Testing Leopard on a G4 PowerBook before I install it on my G5 tower, and it works beautifully - except for one thing. Transferring files using afp file sharing over Airport to my G5 is suddenly excruciating slow! (This can't be because the G5 is still running Tiger can it?) THAT is a total pain, and I have no idea what's causing it. Otherwise it seems faster than Tiger, and I love it - especially Mail stationery!

Will HP Laserjet 1018 work on Leopard?

HP does not have a mac driver for tis Laserjet 1018, so I had to go through this cumbersome process of installing a foomatic and other stuff: The installation process

Do you know if I have to do the same thing when I install Leopard? Would it work?

Really love Leopard. I opted for an Erase and Install, which went flawlessly. All my applications, including Adobe CS3 Design premium, work perfectly. The only thing that I actually can't get to work right is Last.FM, but I'm sure an update will be released soon.

Spotlight is MUCH better, I'm not going to be using QuickSilver any more. And I think I'm going back to Safari full time. The user interface is gorgeous, QuickLook is something I can't understand how I lived without, and overall I'm really happy with Leopard so far.

I had the exact same issue. Hopefully they fix it soon. I was hoping to put off upgrading my Tiger mac mini for a while, so I hope the solution isn't just, "Upgrade your mac mini." That would be silly.
