After all, Mac is sold to consumers, so why not give them the choise of colors, at least in their programs, if their computers are cold/neutrla grey/silver/white colored?

CHOICE? Apple? Consider yourself privileged that you're allowed to set your own desktop wallpaper. Though are you still able to in Lion?

What happened to iCal from the Beta 1 Lion release? I felt that was a great unification of iOS iCal and OS X iCal (the layout was similar to iPad's iCal but it still looked like an OS X app). This new, giant brown header with embossed buttons and hard-to-read titles is just... awful.

Oh Apple Mail has a To Do list. And Notes. But the Calendar is a separate app, as is the Address Book. So why not also have a separate To Do and Notes application? Oh, because they're stored as special formatted email messages in Mail.app, that's why. So how about integrating Calendar and Address Book better in Mail. It's a mess.

You read my mind.

That looks really ugly, and that is coming from a web designer :p.. I liked the original look, but It's not something I'm too concerned about, since its just a calendar app.. I can manage..

But I do hope to see something better in the final release..

I'd prefer a clean modern OS with usability first and foremost.

Who says they haven't? Maybe the iCal developers are so solidly done that they are dinking around with skins now?

And out of curiousity, what does a "modern OS" look like anyway? Is there some standard or generally accepted look for that? Or perhaps by "modern" you mean "not done before" ? I'm honestly curious about the answer to this.

Screw the gratuitous eyecandy…

Eye candy that gets in the way of functional is stupid. Otherwise, as long as I can modify it, I couldn't care less.

Anyone else keep getting distracted by an urge to tear off the little torn bits of the 'previous' sheet of paper?

UGLY :(
Why have the 2 systems got to be integrated.
So now my pro desktop experience is being influenced by a 9 inch toy.
Will Lion be the last roar for Apple's real computer OS?

what about animal lovers?

Some of us avoid animal products for ethical reasons (no leather shoes or belts, vegetarian diet etc). Can we disable the "leather" chrome?

Whoa! The torn paper remnants are going to make me feel like I really tore a page off my screen! And I love the feel of real leather, so I'm going to be busy removing fingerprints from my screen! I'm always getting faked-out by the realism. I'm such a choad.

The rest of the design is not so bad but I wish Apple would get over the urge to make things look like their physical incarnations. I know there is a name for this but it escapes me at the moment.

Virtualizing?

Apple is trying make the real world and computer world look synonymous. It makes sense to me. You guys cant tell me a color HONESTLY bothers you that much???

i'd love if every application would have a different "top bar" color. that would be great for fast recognition/switching between apps,
e.g:
blue/green itunes,
gray safari
violet mail
leather ical
ecc..
i'm just guessing

My first reaction to this was definitely 'ugh', but iCal could use a better interface. I'll hold off on my judgement until I actually use it a while. If it works more efficiently I'll be happy.

Disastrous. This goes far beyond just having a "weird set of controls" or a slightly different custom UI. This is just UGLY, unreasonable, and totally contrary to all sense of good taste. It worked--barely-- on the iPad because the iPad is meant to evoke "real-world" objects. But this is probably the ugliest app to ever come out of Cupertino, and everyone involved should be ASHAMED.

It's as though they went out of their way to make it that top bar as illegible and ugly as possible. And I'm sure you won't be able to get rid of it, either...
