Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2 Brings New Look for iCal

I find most of the comments puerile or insane--over reacting with disdain or glee--while the major concern should be the function. I still find iCal a little limited and annoyingly so in terms of notes attached to daily functions.
Who gives a crap how it is decorated! Make the thing work better and it will work better, and that's what matters to real people who need real organization within their lives.

Can't help it I'm a snotty designer and one of the things I love about Macs are their liberal use of 'flair'. This is counter-intuitive to that style I'm used to.
I will agree that any added functionality would be very welcome.
I don't really care what it looks like; just come up with a clean way of syncing iCal (home) with Outlook (work) without having to go through Google. It's a huge pain having to maintain two separate calendars!

Personally? I find it humorous that so many people on here refuse to use the app, or have big issues with it, all because of the faux leather look to the top bar, or other attempts to make the app look like its physical counterpart. If the app has the FUNCTIONALITY you need, that's what makes it good! I've come to expect that Apple will regularly revise the LOOK of these applications. Even if they had a look that 99.9% of users agreed was "perfect"? They'd revise it with the next major release of the app or OS, simply because they know people don't feel like they really "got enough for their money" if it doesn't look different at a quick glance....
The way it defaults to entering new appointments with that "unnamed appointment" heading drives me nuts too. Accidental taps on the iPhone or iPad can lead to those things being added to your schedule, and if you don't notice it until later? You're left wondering if it's supposed be a real appointment for something, or if it was just a screw-up. They should make it so if you don't actually fill something in, it cancels adding it.
Another feature I'd like to see? It needs a way to easily open up a list of your contacts from the Address Book inside a pane in iCal itself, and drag one over to the calendar to add an appointment with their address inserted as the "location", and name plus maybe phone number(s) in the title. Like many people, I use iCal to track appointments I have with clients, so this info usually needs to go into them.
I saw where someone wrote a fancy Applescript to accomplish this, but IMHO, that's still a "hack" for functionality Apple could/should include!

I find it amusing that there is a trend to make computers more like "the real thing" in areas where computers are far and away used more than the real thing. How many people still use an address/calendar book versus a computer program?

I wonder if that brown looks better on the system than in that screenshot. It makes me happy I don't use iCal anyway.

This iCal look is just plain ugly...
The brown leather looks hideous..if I'd wanted a leather calendar, I'd buy one.

Do like the page turning feature of the address book. Not really impressed with the clunky navigation bar style of the IOS iCal. What is wrong with the page turn ?
Love the year display. This is a leap forward to those of us who are school year planning....it seems to have taken a small age for it to arrive, but now it's here, it's most welcome.

If you want functionality, then go use Windows. Most Mac users are designers and the look of something is just as important as functionality. Steve Jobs may love the look of his day planner, that doesn't mean I have to be stuck with it.
You and the person you quoted imply that UI is not a part of the functionality.

I understand the need to move forward in UI design, but since MacOS X, Apple has really thrown away the one thing that had always made the Mac better. A *consistent, well laid out UI, with consistent behaviors across all apps and OS interfaces*... Apple needs to pick a pot and sit on it, and quit this constant beating on the OS and bundled apps with the ugly stick already. It's like there's a competition inside Apple to see who's fugly "upgrade" causes 10,000+ Mac users to march on the campus w/ torches and pitchforks first..
If I thought anyone there would care to look at it, I'd fedex them my old dog-eared copy of the Apple HIG... sigh.

Blurgh! I really dislike all the 'faux UI' popping up everywhere...not a fan of it on my iOS products and certainly not Mac OS... it looks tacky...lets hope we get a choice... That fake leather looks so *****, id rather have a simple clean UI thank you...what happened to apple's good taste?
Not sure if it has been said, but, changes for iChat - any chance of proper MSN support? I never got the jabber workaround to work reliably for long, but it would be sooo nice to be able to use the built-in app, just like when they finally did Exchange support in Mail. I can dream.

Ditto, looks like they skinned the lion and wrapped the skin around iCal.
I like it, it looks user friendly. Maybe they will allow you to change the color?
When I got my iPad, the first app I fell in love with was the Cal. I remember saying to multiple people that I hope this makes its way in the Apple Os... This is a huge improvement!
