I like it,
its a calendar, it looks like what it does, with MobileMe its the exact same calendar as the one on my iPhone and iPad, now it looks the same
love the continuity in the calendars! if windows look different from each other it's a good thing, because they all do different things.
as long as there's no colour clashing, and there won't be

It is tough to judge completely without seeing week & month views, but I don't like this at all. I hope we see a little less time making iCal look better (which IMO has been wasted effort--yuck!) and a little more time making things like the task list much more productive, let alone fully sync-able with all iOS devices. I'm not a big fan of Outlook as a mail or calendar app, but I love the way it handles tasks. (At least as of the last version of Outlook I used, which is probably 2 revisions ago.)

I am not too keen on this "cartoony" 3D effect Apple seem to be going for.

Torn off pages… faux-leather binding… I mean doesn't anyone else think it is a bit corny?
It really does seems as if the cutesyeness of the iOS is spreading over to OSX.

I'd prefer a clean modern OS with usability first and foremost.

Screw the gratuitous eyecandy…

Remind anyone of OS/2 and their cheesy waste-of-screen-realestate spiral binder stuff?

As a theming option, sure, cool, welcome to last decade Apple. If they're going to force these silly looks randomly per app, booo! But the Mac apps looking like iOS apps is inevitable.. in a few years they will probably all be 1 in the same.

...
I guess now that Macs are only 20% of Apple revenue, we're getting the "B-team" developers and designers. I give Mac OS X 3 more years, tops, before it's Apple ]['d in favor of iOS entirely.

Team? OS X is actually developed by one guy in the boiler room who was actually fired years ago but still shows up to work...

butt ugly (at the very, very list leave the option of reverting as in the mail.app)

Because it's INSANELY UGLY!

Most people with a mac also have ios devices, why not make it a bit more consistant?

Because it's INSANELY UGLY! That's why!!!

Is Steve even running the company anymore???? I mean... I know he's leaving the day to day stuff with others... But it looks like he's just gone.

The phrase Hell in a handbasket come to mind... Not really, but still.

OMG!!!! It's Fugly!

Apple, we all know the mouse is dead... stop wasting time coding mac apps to look like iPad apps and coding mac os to operate like iOS, just do the obvious: ditch the mac platform all together! Make larger iOS devices that allow for the manipulation of iOS apps in windowed form and there you go, desktop operating environment with iOS.

touch input > mouse input

Steve has made it clear that Mac is staying to do the heavy computing, while iOS will stay focused on lighter applications. I think Apple does want to move OS X toward touch, which is why they've done iLife and now Address Book and iCal to look like iOS applications. It's much easier to reskin a Mac app for touch than it is to introduce yet another form factor for iOS, so the way they're doing this makes sense.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if we did see the launch of a MacPad alongside Lion this summer.

To be fair, the brushed metal interface first debuted in 1999 with Quicktime 4.0. Compared to the horrendous user interfaces of the time period, that looks amazing. It is sad though that it took them until leopard to get rid of it...

It's not the brush metal that was bad. It was the Volume Dial on the left side to appear like a dial on a device. To change the volume was difficult.

They are not killing iChat in favor of FaceTime? Glad to hear! I love iChat and was a little bit concerned about its future.

I thought I created a word to describe how I feel about this new iCal, but it appears in the urban dictionary. BLORF!

Ok I guess

I kind of like but does this also mean fragmentation again of the interface?

I rather have a consistant look an feel or if not then allowing for all Applications to have this which personally I rather not, give me boring but functional look.

Ripped paper ROFL like I will think its real on a laptop or a 27 inch monitor.

Make it clean Apple and functional leave all that play stuff for MS Windows.

That is really, really ugly. Like, really ugly. I cannot imagine having that brown turd interface open on my second monitor all day... blargh!
This, and I don't know why Apple feels that their apps (iCal, Address Book, iBooks) must look like real physical calendars and address books.

Year view?

I noticed this has a year view tab. I wonder if the iPhone/iPad calendar will ever have that?
I WISH!
