I'm really excited for Lion. My workflow is about to get so much smoother now that there is sensible multiple monitor support

Has anyone else noticed that they basically have added Activation to OS X, where none of the previous version have it...

Sounds like a Windows feature...

Activation?

Mac App store...

So in order to run the installer(as far as we know so far) you have to authorize the computer, in other words you would have needed to log into the Mac App Store.

Not quite the same fashion of Windows Activation, but still a form of activation.

There is no activation, after you've downloaded the installer you can do whatever you want. Install it, copy it to a USB drive, whatever. There is no more entering of your AppleID after the initial download.

So you can run the installer offline on another computer and not need to log into the Mac App Store?

So how do you know this? Where are you getting that information from, if you don't mind me asking. Are you just assuming you can do this or you know this as fact?

Because it's the way the installer works now. Of course anything could change for the final release, but I think that's unlikely at this point. (and even if they do change it to require an AppleID, it's trivial to extract the DMG from the installer.)

Can you install from a blank HD [with the DP versions], i.e. no system and can boot from the DMG?

Not sure what you're asking. If you restore the dmg to a partition or DVD it works just like any current DVD of OS X. Yes, you can install it on blank drives. It's not an upgrade disk.

If you prefer doing things in a way that's different from Steve Jobs' tightly defined ideal, though -- be it in terms of the kind of hardware you prefer or how you like your phone's software to work -- Apple's mobile products aren't going to cut your mustard. And iOS 5, even with its upload-free iCloud, won't come close to changing that.

That's indeed ridiculous. If Apple wants to insist on digital distribution only they better have App Store available for Leopard and even Tiger. But they won't. This to me is the sole aspect of this method which doesn't make any sense.
I could be wrong, but I don't think any machine that ships with Tiger can run Lion. Lion requires at least a Core2Duo and IIRC, all C2D Macs came installed with at least Leopard.

Not that I think they would update the Mac App Store for Leopard.

my previous comment.....

"so what you going to do if someone has a security breach and downloads a virus via the dvd drive and they remove those as well. you want apple to cater to the people with 0 usb ports, 0 internet connection, and now 0 dvd drive?"

How will you activate it and do updates if it "requires" an internet connection?

I'm guessing that, even though there is no internet connection, they still have a LAN. Most companies/schools of any size push everything (updates, software, installs, etc) over the LAN. There is no need for an internet connection or physical install media in those situations.

Less Than a Core 2 Duo - Need Not Try!

If you have an original MacBook Pro, Mac Mini or iMac that does not have the equivalent of a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon, for get it.

Step 1:
Make sure your Mac can run Lion.
Your Mac must have an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor to run Lion. Find out if your current Mac has one of these processors by clicking the Apple icon at the top left of your screen, then choosing About This Mac.

There are a ton of early Intel machines that are now out.

Leopard to Lion

I can't believe I need to upgrade to an OS i won't use (Snow Leopard) to be ab le to download Lion.

Surely Apple don't need to put us Leopard users through an unnecessary step?

Apple must have a better solution than this?!

A windows user told me that Windows can't handle itunes very well. I like to multitask and listen to itunes while working on office documents or a graphing application like Igor Pro for instance.

Given that OS X handles multitasking of this sort and itunes better, that is another reason for me to stick with OS X. Not to mention the malware.

That's a problem with Apple's shoddy coding in iTunes, not with Windows. Winamp worked perfectly on my Pentium 100 mhz back in the Windows 95 days to listen to mp3s while working in other applications.

Not that you care, no one was even discussing Windows, you're just baiting for answers. I should just move you to my ignore list, like everyone should do.

I guess I'm lucky and can download this. I can quite understand those on slow internet connections being annoyed though. Perhaps a version too early.

Hopefully this'll force ...
1) Governments to make a push towards faster internet services by service providers: making high-speed (even light & capped) a mandatory to usher in this century. Education will suffer without it and pricing should NOT be the controlling factor for children/family's mis-education. Current school curriculum is bad enough as it is in the western world.
2) Possibly in less than 2 years this will happen. Looks like USA is already happened.

I honestly do not want to use the App Store or be tied to an account.

I thought the same thing until yesterday. For now I saw have a close friend download it then copy from the "Downloads" folder to a USB key and then you install it. I figure since you've already licensed OS X that it'll recognize for you to upgrade - then again the purchased download maybe enrypted or digitally signed to 1 account and 1 machine its downloaded to.

Let the Virtual service ecosystem race begin!

Instead on going to the shop to buy Lion DVD, you can go to the Apple store and use the WiFi to download it.

For Eidorian, this doesn't work. Also for those with a Mac Pro, 27/30" iMac this doesn't work too well either. At least warranty replaced iPhones, iPod Touch, and iPads will have clients leaving a LOT more happier.

So I last night a beta tester told me about the user library being hidden. I don't know how I feel about this.

At first I thought this does not sound like a good idea. On the other hand, I can make it visible if I need to get in there and people who wouldn't be likely to take the time to get learn how probably shouldn't be messing around in there anyway.

I don't think this can be equated with OS X going to a full iOS experience sans the Finder. I think the Finder will always be there. But perhaps in Lion, the installation and uninstallation process will be clearly defined for developers and more tightly controlled so that those of us who occasionally need to go into the library will no longer really need to at all.

Anyway once again I am excited about another upgrade for OS X while not being tempted at all to switch to Windows.

Leopard - Lion

With Software Update you can skip old updates as "all previous updates have been included in this download.."

Where is the efficient option for Leopard users wishing to buy Lion. WITHOUT having to install Snow Leopard, which I wont use! ..

There's certainly no need to force apple users to install TWO OS's to get to one!

This is crazy. Am I alone here?!
