I think you are missing something here. If I were told, "Here is Snow Leopard, you will have to have this to ever upgrade your computer in the future, it is $29.99" I would have bought it and used it and enjoyed it. However, I decided to not buy every single new thing that comes out. How am I treated? I am possibly forced to pay $29.99 for something I don't use. Why don't I just set some money on fire? And don't start with it is only $X. Money is money, and I don't like wasting it.

$29 is the "upgrade" price from Snow Leopard to Lion.

MS offers "upgrade" versions of their OS which are cheaper than an "original" version, but require a previous version of windows to install.

So basically you are saying if Apple offered an "original" upgrade version that you would be happier?

Guess what, they do.... it's called spend $58 and you can go from tiger to Lion!

exactly! so many people want to be catered to for their specific situation.

4 balls=walk
3 strikes=out

why is this rocket science for some?

Pretty sure Apple is claiming this is something more than an "upgrade" to snow leopard. Snow leopard was an upgrade to leopard. Lion is new. Also, you don't go from tiger to lion, you go from tiger to SL to lion. Nice try though.

It is not rocket science...and it certainly is not baseball, or maybe you are more of a fast pitch softballer.

you don't get it. it's a "rule" of the game.

apples rule is you need SL to be able to get Lion for price of $29.99. If you don't have SL you simply don't qualify at the price of $29.99.

since it requires snowleopard to download, it's an upgrade from SL to Lion.

obviously i know you have to go from tiger to SL to lion... well actually that's all a theory, but we'll assume it's true. It's the point... if you want lion pay $58, if you don't, DON'T.... quit complaining.

If apple would have said you can buy lion for $129 and upgrade any machine would you have been happier?

happier, probably not but I would have understood.

So I guess you would have been ok with Apple coming out with the iPhone 4 and saying it is $299, but only if you bought the iphone 3gs, and if you did not buy the iphone 3gs and stuck with the iphone 3g there is no other option for you other than buying the 3gs, throwing it in the trash and buying the iphone4 a minute later?

so you would be happier to pay OVER DOUBLE the price, just to go from leopard/tiger to lion without SL in between, but then you are bitching about the costs and "wasting" money? Your argument is dumb and you are just whining to whine.

That's not even remotely the same. The iPhone 4 is not an operating system or software for that matter. And there is no "upgrade" path from iPhone to iPhone, you buy one when you want it or need it.

And i'm still curious, who has CONFIRMED that you must install SL to install Lion? From what I have seen, you only need SL to download lion (due to the MAS) not to actually do the install, so until that's also confirmed, quit complaining.

Don't boss me. I like how it is not even remotely the same because it does not further your argument. and if you think I would be "happier" then clearly you did not read my post.

So you are telling me I have to buy an old OS to upgrade to the new OS. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

It would be awesome if you could go the the Apple Store and they can load it for you or they could install SL (still a stupid option) for free and let you then install Lion.

Snow Leopard was released in August 2009. It cost the enormous sum of $29. For $29, you could have enjoyed the benefits of Snow Leopard for 22 months. You chose not to. This isn't Jaguar or Panther or Tiger or Leopard that cost $129, that was $29. Pocket money. If you haven't upgraded to Snow Leopard yet, then you have never bought anything from the app store. Which means that software developers have no interest in you whatsoever.

I'll tell you what benefits _everyone_ gets from Apple's strategy: People won't wait two years to upgrade to the new OS anymore. Which means developers can start requiring 10.7 quickly. Anyone who doesn't buy Lion in the first three months isn't going to upgrade ever, and people who don't upgrade ever don't buy software. So software developers will stop caring about 10.6 users very, very quickly. Which is a good thing.

so you "understand" paying double the price to not have to use SL as a stepping ground, but you're still complaining about wasting money. So what is more important to you, saving the money, or not using snow leopard? Seems to me you are just upset about *potentially* having to use snow leopard and are using any excuse you can think of to bitch about it.

It's not the same, if you can't see that, sorry you must be challenged. OSX Lion is an operating system UPGRADE, iphones are HARDWARE. That's like saying you think apple is going to charge us extra money to upgrade to a macbook pro if we don't buy every single release. It's not even close to the same, people buy hardware, and then upgrade the OS on it.

Lion was unveiled in 2010, so in reality I did not wait 22 months. I waited a year and found out something new was coming out and decided to just get that instead.

madness

Really this is crazy; Apple will have to do something about the Leopard - Lion issue or upset a lot of clever people.

pretty sure I can complain about it if I want to. and the only thing that I am "challenged" on is not stooping to your level of attacking someone's intelligence because they don't agree with me.

what do they have to do about it... buy SL for $29, and then you can download lion for $29 from the app store. It's not like it's impossible to upgrade your OS if you are on tiger/leopard

Unfortunately the bend over and take it clan can't see past their knees. I would hazard a guess that 99% of those saying it's only $xx are nothing more than iSheep and didn't even know Apple existed 10 years ago.

I guess if paying $29 to get a brand new version of OSX is "bending over and taking it" I wonder what you consider people who are paying $100+ for Windows?

So I last night a beta tester told me about the user library being hidden. I don't know how I feel about this.

At first I thought this does not sound like a good idea. On the other hand, I can make it visible if I need to get in there and people who wouldn't be likely to take the time to get learn how probably shouldn't be messing around in there anyway.

This is going to be a nightmare for the AppleCare advisors, glad I'm not one any longer.

principles, taste and law

if you want to be a baby about it, fine by me. at least have a valid reason to complain though. If you want lion it costs $58 for you... pay it or don't, i don't see what you are even upset about.

In the UK. Thankfully we have Consumer Rights and Protection apple need to think about. I think Apple need to tread carefully here. Impressions are ultimately more important than history.

(if you do wish to upgrade to Lion)
you have to take the technically needless task of downloading a DIFFERENT OS to the one you are after. Really bad science. I expect better

There's no accounting for taste

I have a 2007 core2duo macbook that came with Tiger 10.4.9 (I still have the original gray DVDs and checked).
OK, my bad.

In any event, folks who have C2D (or higher) Macs, running Leopard, and intend to update to Lion should probably buy their Snow Leopard DVDs soon. Otherwise, they might find themselves without the ability (legally) to update from Leopard to Lion since Apple may stop selling SL discs.

I know that I waited too long to update from Tiger to Leopard and when SL came out, they sold the remaining Leopard discs and that was it. I learned the hard way that Tiger was unsupported for the newest Airport Extremes and I had to update all the way to Snow Leopard. Luckily, my Mac could upgrade to SL, but if I didn't have an Intel Mac, I would have had to buy Leopard on eBay or Craigslist and gotten reamed on the price.

Would the UK government (or agency) really get involved in something like this? Seems like a waste of time and resources.

Apple's not forcing anyone to upgrade to Lion. Those that choose to upgrade will have to go through the channels that Apple provides. Apple is providing the Mac App Store as the sole means to upgrade.

I don't see how consumers are being wronged here. Buy a copy of SL and then upgrade to Lion. Or not.

Why?

You think everyone should be loyal to a stock-floating corporation and suck and swallow what's in front of you?

insanity
I think she/he meant that if there isn't a way to skip SL to upgrade to Lion, then they'd be out. But I could be wrong.

No I meant 'if there is a way'. Anyways it was a joke to all the people whining about everything Apple does.

When you go on vacation you get to bring along your 15mbps cable connection with you? Even on a beach? Or on a bus? Or when driving across the country? Really? How is that working out for you? Does a helicopter hover over you to provide you with that real time cable drop?

When you go on vacation do you bring your SL install DVD just in case? And even if you did, will you reinstall the OS from scratch on a bus? Get real...
