I actually paid $29 to use SNOW leopard, the mac already had leopard on it. And if/when i pay $29 for Lion, I will have paid $58 (unless somehow $29+$29=/=$58 as you apparently seem to think) to upgrade from leopard to lion. You aren't paying any more, nor any less than I did, so what's your point.

The more I think about it, the less of a shocker it is to have to pay for the SL upgrade first.

Apple is pricing low and calling it an "upgrade pricing" each step. The double upgrade is still cheaper than if they charged over $100 each OS. If they did, then of course you should expect any OS to be upgradable.

There are applications on for the mac and I'm sure Windows that have upgrade prices. Some, but not all, pro-rate the discount based on the latest version you own. The more recent the version, the more discount. So this is not unheard of.

My 2 pence

I wanted to like Lion but on first viewing of the preazentation it seems to just be adding a lot of new features for new features' sake. Is there really any need for launch pad on a desktop or laptop computer? Who can't find their apps the way things are?? I get worried that Apple is constantly moving stuff from iOS to OSX when it should be the other way around.

The one thing that caught my eye was the auto-saving and restore feature, but I don't think it'll be worth £20.99 to me.

Some thoughts.

1> I'm REALLY annoyed that the same trio of blockheads keep being shown at WWDC or major Apple events: the early iPhone developers (1 I recognize from Smule). I'm annoyed because they get front row seats, they're not the only successful developers, they're not the only one's developing unique & rich apps, and their applause seems like they don't care whats being announced. They're not even great cheerleaders for the iOS platform during the presentations. I'd rather see that one-man developer that created that incredible painting app for iPhone & iPad used by many top artists and featured on The New Yorker in print.

Has anyone here actually read other forums. It looks like you will be able to burn the download to a DVD after all, at least they can with the preview version. Which means you could do a fresh install. Hopefully this will still be true with the released version.

Here is the link for directions of how to do it with Lion downloaded from the Mac Store.

In theory perhaps, in reality, not quite! ;):D

We're talking legit here or not ? Because if we're going to go the unlicensed route, it's more like this :

A Lion upgrade costs the following amount based on your current OS:

Snow Leopard/Leopard/Tiger - $0

Seriously, either we're talking fully legit or not legit. Are you advocating people install unlicensed copies of Snow Leopard unto their Tiger systems ?

That is a relief.

There is still another problem though. Say a new MBP is released, needing new drivers for everything, the OS that comes factory installed with the MBP has these drivers. But because Apple don't include physical media of the OS in the box, how do we re-install that particular OS (with the new drivers) after installing an aftermarket SSD?

People obsession with comparing the price to that of a windows update are just not getting it.

How often do Microsoft give Windows a major overhaul? Approx 4 years.
What does it cost to upgrade? Ultimate Version Approx £150.00

How often do Apple release a version? Every 1.5 to 2 years.
Normal cost has been £99?

Upgrading Macs has always cost more. Apple just do it more often so people will carry on buying.

You're not accounting for the fact that you had to buy a PC at Apple's prices for industry-standard x64 hardware, without the ability to choose the configuration (Blu-ray, internal 3G/4G modems, ...).

That fact makes Win7 a bargain in comparison....

Faulty logic, OSes are detached from their hardware. Any OS that runs on PC hardware (Including all the hacks and obscure non-*nix oses) could take advantage of that.

Not really an advantage for Windows. Hell considering most computers with a cell-modems built in come with 7 Starter, its a bit of a non-starter.

Bahhh! Bahhh!

I wonder if sheep like being milked dry?

Obviously yes - the sheeple continue to offer their credit cards to the overlords of Cupertino.

There's one OS from a fruit company in Cupertino, CA which is definitely bound to the hardware - at least according to the EULA.

FAIL on your logic.

They appear to be moving toward a 3 year plan and stepping the server side along as well. 2009-2012 for 7 to 8.

I still have not found a need to do a clean install since launch.

The EULA is superfluous to the running of Mac OSX or anything for that matter, its just text. Apple could change a clause that you need to wear USB glowing bunny ears to use Mac OSX and it will still not be bound to the Hardware. Mac OSX will still run if you wear your bunny ears or not.

I can understand the complaints. I have an easy solution.

Buy a new computer. Then you don't have to buy Snow Leopard at all ;)

Take advantage of the upgrade, which will be free ;)

If you go for the white MacBook or MacBook Air 11" then you're paying the low, low price of $999 and you won't be forced to buy Snow Leopard to upgrade your clunker! :)

LOL

The rapid anti-apple folks are bringing up blu ray again.

Watch the rating of my post go down. These are very sensitive people you know. If you don't conform to their version of computers in the world they just can't handle it.

Apple has a pretty small selection when you think about it. Conforming to versions of computers screams apple. Workarounds, lack of ports, lack of Blu, USB 3. They can do what they want obviously, till people stop buying then they would have to play the hardware game.

I will say their computers are some of the best built.

For god sake Apple, give us an OpenGL update!!! We've waited long enough and it's beyond stupid.

No OpenGL related information about Lion from Apple. Got some info from Netkas' site, seems like Lion supports OpenGL 3.0 features. But who cares anyway? Lion has some great new touchpad gestures and "features" for 13'' displays ....

Apple once produced good content creating devices - but in the post pc aera its all about consuming.

It's not a relief. Where does OSX keep your installer files from applications you bought in the Appstore?

I do not know.
