Lion - Me No Like

I really hope Apple isn't going down the wrong road with this. I was about as stoked with the Mac App Store, Full Screen Mode, App Home Screen, Launch Pad, etc. as I was about the fact that they spend the first half of the "event" on tweaks of iLife that I'll never use. (Totally not going to buy iLife.) I.e., I felt a little nauseous.

There just wasn't anything exciting. It seemed like they've run out of cool, useful things to do with OS X, and now they're going to ruin it by laying on unwanted fluff.

Fail

ILife update.......yawn not impressed.
Mac book Air? What is the point when you can have either an IPad toy or a Macbook/Pro?

The App store and sneak preview of Lion, just filled me with horror. I know its early days, but if that is how it is going to be then I'll stick with Snow Leopard.
:eek::mad::eek:

And so Steve continues on his quest to turn the Mac into the platform for the stupid, who need everything given to them with big graphics and dumb interfaces.

Apple is breeding a technical retarded user base who have no idea how anything works and whose idea of troubleshooting is clicking an appointment button at an Apple Store.

If an App store is the highlight of Lion then it only highlights how little there is left for actual professionals and users who want to have some control over what their machines actually do.

You described 99% of Windows users. BTW simple is not stupid. Probably App Store for Mac is just for installing: very handy. You will have control like you have now.

This made leopard to snow leopard look good...

Yeah yeah blah blah, snow leopard behind the scenes bull...(i immensely appreciate 64bit and Grand central but not solely as a OSX upgrade)

I'd like to see an upg of what leopard was from tiger...
Quicklook is great, bootcamp is great, time machine is great, stacks is great blah blah... actually changed my workflow and made my computing life better and use it every freaking day...

I guess its hard to improve on a great OS...but to add innovation from a freakin oversized ipod touch to a desktop OSX is painful.

Some of us don't want consumer simplicty...ilife doesn't interest me, (except iphoto :p) Adobe master collection with cinema4d and vray and i'm a happy chappy Not some watered down retard ease of use generic *****...although fair play...better than anything windows bundles with, but is completely dormant on my system.

Launch pad? hmm spaces and quicksilver is more than good and fast... windows 7 snaps would be nice esp with a 27 inch screen...

WTF is up with apple's UI lately? I thought iBooks looked *****, now game centre and now that freakin wooden shelf is in iLife's iPhoto...please nip that in the bud...soon it could be in finder... NooOoOoOo! Meep!

App store for an OSX!? what happened to a google search or a direct d/l...my software normally updates itself fine too... infact the downloads section of apple.com is decent enough..

Trim support would be nice, offload more **** to gpu...maybe some system tasks? a NICE new UI, im not completely sold the Quicktime X, although I like way the menu bars disappear and appear moving the mouse off the window

I liked the rumour of the drop box killer... public me.com could be far improved, esp for price I pay. More jazz up in the cloud...More 'magic' I wouldn't think of...anything but making my beautiful OSX more iOS like...I like my 'truck' Steve and the worlds needs trucks.

A sad day for OSX i think... Although im glad apple agree vertical touch screens would be ****.. i was half worried about making parts of OSX touch screen for future models...ie front row and iphoto...

We'll see what else Lion holds... but I won't hold my breath, although it'll be still be better than what MS knocks out...

Launch Pad is pointless...

I see the Launch Pad as a way to bring new customers to the Mac. There are a lot of iOS users who are not Mac users. Mac a feature on the Mac that tells them "you already know how to use this" and it makes it that much easier to get more people to switch.

I agree that Launch Pad isn't for everyone (I'm content with my pop-up apps folder on the dock), which is nice that it's simply an optional way for people to work.

I saw launchpad coming. I was actually thinking of making an attempt to make it on my mac but I got a bit busy...

Only thing I would do different is I'd put all removable media and drives on the dock, so people can opt for an empty desktop.

PS: I was really hoping they'd never have to resort to using 'Lion' as a name... I guess they really are running out of big cats.

My take on the Mac App Store?

Finally, we get an official package manager for OS X. Linux perfected the unified application management approach years ago, and we finally catch up.

I imagine the likes of Microsoft and Adobe will want to negotiate on those profit splits, but for the smaller-time and indie guys I think this could be a good deal. Having all my OS X apps be managed and updated through a single, clean interface makes me think happy thoughts.

That share covers server (for stability), bandwidth and the fact that you are would be marketed in a well seen / used / searched place. It's quite a good deal ask indie games devs on Steam.

Did anyone notice that when they were demoing Lion, on the top right corner where spotlight and all that is, there was nothing but spotlight? Will the rest of it be moved in Lion?

WILL I ONLY BE ABLE TO BUY MAC SOFTWARE FROM THE NEW MAC APP STORE?

No.

BUT YOU'RE GOING TO TURN AROUND IN 12 MONTHS TIME AND FORCE US ALL TO BUY FROM THE MAC APP STORE AREN'T YOU!

No.

ISN'T THE NEW APP STORE ANOTHER WAY FOR APPLE TO MAKE MONEY?

Yes. In case you haven't noticed, we are a commercial business. If we don't make money, we close up shop and then you don't get your shiny new iToys each Christmas.

ISN'T IT GREEDY FOR APPLE TO TAKE A 30% CUT OF APPLICATION SALES?

You think other sales channels do this for free?

THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR MAC OS ISN'T IT.

Right. We're making Launchpad look kind of like an iOS interface, so when we stop making Macs no one will notice. (Sarcasm.)

Finally, someone who's talking some sense.

I hope Apple makes it a policy for an application to be approved by Apple before it is allowed on Mac OS X. It will make the OS experience a lot more safer.

I like the Mac App Store. You still see Safari down there. They would be stupid to not allow you to download programs and stuff off the internet on a Desktop/Notebook computer.

Why is everyone so worried about this?

Do you wanna know why I like the Mac App Store already?

Because I can buy just Pages for my Mac for less like on the iPad instead of buying iWork and getting 2 apps I almost never use.

I think they are only pulling what is good and makes sense from iOS to Mac OS X. Why would they ruin the Desktop/Notebook style? iOS is for mobile devices. Mac OS X is a desktop/notebook OS. Stop whining!

The moment they do that, I'm off back to Windows. I don't need Apple to keep me safe.

The App Store will be useful as a compliment to the OS as it is at the moment.

totally agree on this one. It makes buying apps IF you want to, more easily and what looks to be more organized. No one is holding anyone's head to a gun to by any app that's out there-no matter the device.

But you have no problem with them keeping you safe on the iPhone, right? I think it would be great if it was the same way on the Mac.

Will Devs start charging more for Apps you bought from them b/c of the 30% take?

I personally don't like the idea of the App Store b/c just like the one for iOS it doesn't help with trials which most softwares offer. I also like keeping my installer file and serial so that when I wipe my machine for maintenance or a new OS or a new machine, I can download the latest version or use my latest installer and I have my serials. I don't trust Migration Assistant, and I want more control over what I install on a newer machine or what to leave behind that isn't compatible with a newer OS. I also don't want to restore from Time Machine wholesale for the same reasons. The App Store leads to convenience but seems like it can be problematic later.

You don't have to trust the migration wizard. Just use your Apple ID to restore all apps. It is that simple! Also, you don't have to use the App Store.

That's probably true and a very astute observation. While Launchpad may be weird and unnecessary to a lot of us old school geeks, it makes perfect sense to the iOS generation of Apple customers.

Looking forward to Lion, but a couple thoughts.

This was just a sneak peak, are those the top-of-the-heap features that they showed us? Is it possible there will be any more rather important interface, or functionality changes?

Now some pondering....What will the price be? 79-100? Or in the Snow Leopard price range? Oh yeah, and most importantly, what will be the "go-to" desktop background, past two releases have been variations of the aurora, I have to know what this one will be, it's important :D lol. What ever happened to those "iOS" scrolling rumors, hmm.

One more thing, since they'll be incorporating multi-touch more in this OS, guess it's time for me to buy some kind of multi-touch input for my iMac, but I REALLY despise the magic mouse, although the trackpad might work. Just my opinion.

Appstore to offer users integrated cloud storage?

All this fine tuning and IOS-ifying is surely linked in some way to that mega data storage centre, right?

Sure, the Appstore is going to be available in 10.6 but in 10.7 I'll bet there'll be even more 'cloud' features that developers can build into their apps.

Also, I'm a big fan of distraction-free full-screen view. Spaces + Full Screen apps makes perfect sense to me.

Not everyone likes to bend over and take it up the backside from jobs. Although it seems the vast majority of people here are more than willing to do what ever he wants. The intergration levels as they are at present are fine.

If you can't keep yourself save with applications you don't have the intelligence to be using a computer. Or have we got it wrong and you mean smoother?

Overall it is an OS for morons. just like the iPad is a iPod touch for morons with fat fingers. Are people really becoming so thick that they can't do anything for themselves. Apple certainly seems to think so.

The air update was fair enough, it was long overdue and got enough of an update to give it a slightly longer painful death.

My big hope with the OSX app store is that it doesn't turn into a race to the bottom full of fart apps and users moaning if an app costs more then $0.99

The best feature of Lion will be the stunning picture of a Lion on the front of the box.
