I see the same icons in the dock as on the desktop...

Why ?

This is looking more like an OS for people who are totally computer illiterate

It's the launch pad, not the desktop. Akin to the Launcher from OS 9. You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

Hope Apple ditches the Magic Mouse by the time Lion ships. Do you remember how much the guy doing the demo struggled to to swipe with that thing? You can't swipe side to side on something you are holding between your fingers! It's awkward!! Swiping on a trackpad makes more sense, but not on a mouse. It's just plain ridiculous.

Did some of you watch the keynote? That's not the actual desktop. It's the "launch pad" that can fade into view when you do a multitouch gesture (similar like Dashboard).

Those icons aren't on the desktop, the launch pad is like a layer above.

One just needs practice.

This will be the bridge between OS X and OS 11. The UI will be very different than it is now. I loved aqua and am getting a little tired of the smooth gray look. I'll welcome the iOS look on my Macs.

That's why I love my Magic Trackpad.

Yes you can, I do it every day using an app called Bettertouchtool. Three finger swipe down for expose, three finger swipe up to show desktop, then the default two finger swipe left and right for navigating back and forth through various things.

The guy doing the demonstration was clearly just nervous as hell. I've never seen someones hands shake so much.

Confused

If Lion becomes locked-down like iOS, bye bye Mac. Just seems like that's the way it's headed. Not something I'm thrilled about. I already don't like their terms and conditions for iOS and refuse to code for it. Not going to be happy with the nickel-and-dime parade coming to the desktop.

 If you already refuse to code for the platform as is why would you worry about a future change to the UI etc,????.

You're just not holding your mouse right. :D

It's not the mouse itself, the guy was really nervous, you can see it on his face. To demo OS X after Steve Jobs is scary for anybody. He needed it to go off perfectly and unfortunately, it didn't go well.

While me might normally dismiss such a vague claim
I think you meant "we".

Now that we're talking about Lion User Interface, I noticed this while looking at the Lion screenshot from Apple. Something missing there, eh?

I'm so ready for this ! Don't get your panties in a bunch people, apple is nor locking down the Mac they are styleizing it and adding features.

Err it's easy. I have three finger swipe left and right on my Magic Mouse to snap the window to the left/right of the screen. Magic mouse is the best new thing to come to the mac in the last 5 years at least. It's the only reason I still have faith in apple's ability to make desktop computers and OSs. I hope Lion makes a lot MORE use of the magic mouse and gestures.

of course you need better touch tool to actually make it useful.

So what? Big freaking deal! That missing button's function is so insignificant that, I bet, it was painless ditching it altogether anyway. Missing traffic light buttons - now THAT would be shocking, innovative, revolutionary for God's sake. :D

I like my MBP. I don't want it to turn into an iDevice that's locked down with an OS upgrade. If the new desktop os becomes iOS-like, I'm just gonna install another OS.

So what are you suggesting? That missing button's function is so insignificant that, I bet, it was painless ditching it altogether.

I use that button all the time to collapse the toolbar, especially on my 13" where space is at a premium.

Several existing Apple apps with toolbars (or toolbar like areas) have already dropped the "Hide Toolbar" button, so I wouldn't be too surprised if they ditched it entirely in Lion. For example, Safari and the Mac App Store apps have toolbar areas, but don't have the "Hide Toolbar" button in Snow Leopard. Safari actually still has a "Hide Toolbar" option in the View menu, it just doesn't have the button.

I'm worried about the path that apple is going down. I don't like the control they have been putting on their devices. As I move more from being a consumer to being a prosumer I am starting to seriously dislike these steps to control the environment and to fill it with gimmicky features that add no additional functionality. Launchpad is no different then a full screen stack and the idea of IOS folders in addition to standard folders just seems silly to me. I can deal with gimmicky features but if apple makes a move to lock OSX down like IOS then I would be as good as gone. I really like apple's tightly integrated environment because I feel that it yields great products but if I am going to have to buy a pc to jailbrake my mac I might as well just use the pc.
