Highlighted with red squares. Go open something like Pages, Mail or Finder and look what's on the upper right corner.

Isn't that picture a picture of Expose or "Mission Control"? Maybe it doesn't show up because it's in that. Or what's most likely is those Apps were in full screen mode and when someone did "Mission Control" it didn't show up because the bar is an overlay when in full screen mode.

Now that we're talking about Lion User Interface, I noticed this while looking at the Lion screenshot from Apple. Something missing there, eh?

Good to see that old useless features are being cut away. Why did "hide toolbar" merit its own button?

It's time. The desktop OS with its 25-year-old paper-based metaphors (folders, trash cans) is past due for a reinvention.

I doubt they were in full screen, due to Pages' size, but Mission Control seems highly possible. Could also be the fact that they're just trying to simplify their UI with removing everything out of the way that they don't seem necessary anymore.

Several existing Apple apps with toolbars (or toolbar like areas) have already dropped the "Hide Toolbar" button, so I wouldn't be too surprised if they ditched it entirely in Lion. For example, Safari and the Mac App Store apps have toolbar areas, but don't have the "Hide Toolbar" button in Snow Leopard. Safari actually still has a "Hide Toolbar" option in the View menu, it just doesn't have the button.

This.

Many companies are moving toward dropping this anyway. Apple is just doing what everybody else have done. It'll probably be accessible via View Menu or a keyboard shortcut instead.

Many people have no idea what the pill" button is for, which is probably what prompted the companies to drop it overall.

Also, you're looking at something that's not finalized yet. What we saw at the demo months ago are months old builds as well. Apple do not tend to demo the latest cutting edge build at the media event and they didn't show anything else at the media event either.

It is also likely that we will not see this in the dev seeds either (if Apple do plan to proceed with this). Most of the new interface will be shown at a media event in June before Apple releases the final preview build which will lead with rapid seeding schedule and then finally the GM build.

Seriously, the most important feature IMO would be the f* resolution independence...

It's really needed now to drive those 27" hd panels in a confortable way!

But... as usual, I don't see it coming so soon....

I don't think it'll be in 10.7, that's something that Apple might reserve for the OS with a new major file system and I think that's reserved for OS XI. Granted, Apple could have both already implemented and rename 10.7 to OS XI. The naming scheme suggest that it is not likely to happen.

Wait till you see how Apple implement an even better solution/replacement for "that button". They always do. ;)

I would prefer that they keep it, but I'd be OK if they replaced it with a consistent key command (there isn't even one in Mail.)

Well, we do have one piece of the puzzle. I'm sure Lion's color scheme will resemble the site's color scheme.

For fullscreen mode apps, yes. I think windows will still retain the grey look.

If you want a good idea of what Lion will look like, look at iLife. Almost all the aqua elements have been stripped out; even the barber pole progress bars are changed.

The iLife look is of course largely taken from the iPad, especially fullscreen mode. Mail and iCal will probably resemble the iPad / MobileMe versions.

iLife look + iOS scrollbars = Lion GUI.

What metaphors should be used? I like how it is currently. Unless a switch makes things more efficient or logical I fail to see why anyone would want a change other than for change's sake.
The shortcut tends varies wildly.
True, but considering the button's look and placement I doubt the general populous ever notices it let alone uses that button.

I agree, although it's odd that Apple switched color schemes on the site before the new style was showed in Lion.

only feature i care about is an openGL that isn't so 2006. But i doubt 3d and gaming will be a lion focus. concidering the focus is mobile these days.

Just like everything else. It is fun to post all the new features for propaganda or discuss it here where someone would actually notice. Otherwise you can pile it onto the list of rarely noticed or used things all over OS X.

I still scare people with Exposé and hiding applications. Minimizing is atrocious.

The Mac App Store along with Steam on Mac is changing that. Many of the most popular applications in both iOS and Mac App Store are games, so if Apple wants a cut of those profits, they need to improve the drivers as fast as they can.

Maybe to gauge the public's reaction? Apple has been known to do that.

What makes you think it won't be able to do exactly what you want it to do?

Well my android can do the things i want but not the iPhone, So if OSX is becoming more like IOS then it will mean the same for sure no?
