Seems like early Nov. is unlikely. Wiki for OSX releases (i.e 10.0 10.1 10.2, etc), all of them were released at the end (24th-26th) of their respective months.

I also have a question: I'm new to Macs and have two Macs at home now. Can I just buy one SL CD and use it to install on both machines?

Technically, you can do that - but legally, no. Just buy the family version ($50) if you want to upgrade two or more Macs (up to 5).

And I'm hoping it comes out mid-Sept. Even though it's not typical, neither is the OS (a OS with little/no end-user features). Let's hope.

I'm contemplating on whether or not I should pre-order on Amazon as well, or just show up at the local Apple store for a quick pickup.

I don't think the Family Packs will be flying out the door, but I've never been around for an OS X launch. Is it like iPhone Day? Standing in long lines, mass crowding in and around the store?

I went along to the Tiger and Leopard launches. The Tiger launch was mental because it was also the stores opening day and there was a massive long line with lots of stuff going on.

The Leopard launch was lower key. There was less than 100 people in line at (re-)opening time and we had enough time to watch a few of the demos and of course grab the free T-shirt. Don't worry though, I doubt if they will sell out on the first night.

Here's to hoping that $29 DVD doesn't require a previously installed version of Leopard and you can just do a clean install.

Yes. Long lines. It is hard to believe there are so many Mac users. The lines look like the iPhone 3G launch of last year. Lots of people in the mall will ask what the line is about? The people in the line look at them like they grew another head and are in total shock they don't know about the new operating system update.

Same here. That's one of my biggest fears. I always like to do clean installs - I NEVER upgrade, or install on top of an existing OS. Never did neither with Windows or now Mac OS X.

I hope we have an option for a CLEAN install. Apple - you better have listened to us and give us this option!

Well, it is another $20 bucks to be legal.

This is great news, I have been alot more patient about my Apple upgrades over the years, so I'm waiting to see which video cards get full Grand Central support before I take the plunge with a brand new Mac Pro. :D

I'm really interested in the new GeForce GTX 285 but the current drivers don't allow it to reach it's full potential, also the Radeon HD 4870 generally has better core performance so I'm hoping Snow Leopard fixes this. I am also hoping for a minor revision or perhaps and price reduction in the Core i7 processors as Intel's Core i5 chips will be shipping soon with comparable performance. Lastly, I am hoping for a full Cinema Display update so I could decide which one to get, hopefully with a matte option like the laptops.

I went to the Tiger launch at the store. Once the date is announced, I'll decided if my schedule will allow me to buy at the store, otherwise it'll be Amazon. I have yet to get a free :apple:shirt, maybe SL will be my year!

The Leopard Launch does take me back.

People in line kept asking me for my MacRumors screen name.

Grand Central Dispatch is for CPUs, have nothing to do with graphic cards. You might be talking about OpenCL, Apple already listed the cards that supports OpenCL. There was a seed with graphic drivers update, don't know if it includes your GTX 285. Probably not, it'll be released via an update later on most likely.

OpenCL
  • NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GTS, Geforce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130.
  • ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870

Shortly after the iPhone 3.0 O/S went to Gold Master, it was available all over the Torrent sites prior to official release. Expect the same for SL?
iPhone OS is easy to get because the access to it is open for all iPhone Devs and Apple'll release GM seed to those devs. Apple won't seed SL GM seed for all, only to the top ADC members who paid for that. It may be leaked, but it'll take several days or weeks to find it.

If it has free Quicktime Pro (as in the new Quicktime X) then that alone is worth $29 if you ask me.
It doesn't include Pro if the GM seed doesn't include any preference pane for QTX. QTX is purely a player, nothing more.

And yes you can install it on both machine if you want, the license is for one machine but there is no serial or activation. The family pack is only 49$ and for 5 machines. If you love OS X, get the family pack.

Yes, you can, but it violates the Terms of Use. Your best off buying a Family Pack, or two SL DVDs.

Yes, lets keep it legal people! :) Apple has always charged significantly less for OS upgrades than Microsoft, and now even less. Only $29, seriously. Lets support the best OS on the planet so Apple can keep making even better and cooler! :D

It is also very cool of them to not Nazi it up like Microsoft and just go with the honor system!

I guess so much for Marble or a consistent UI though! :( I honestly am SHOCKED that Steve's OCD is not going crazy with the million different UI hodge podge that is going on in OS X now for quite some time, and even after a Leopard proclamation of making things "consistent". Well now it is more miss matched than ever before, and I love aqua but man it is OLD!

My hope is that with the new underlying technology in Snow Leopard, Apple is going to do a crazy cool new UI for OS X 10.7!

How does the 29$ version work? I know you have to have a current copy of Leopard (Unibody 17") but what if I erase the machine do I have to pull the M$ route and install leopard first then SL upgrade or just use the SL upgrade disc?

I'll be pre-ordering from Apple ASAP.

I really, really, really want to see some new UI tweaks. The last ones I can remember, the desktop backgrounds, were a bit underwhelming.

If backgrounds are the first and only bad thing you can think of about OSX, then things look great to you :) Seriously, most people use something of their own (and die-hard graphical designers use some percentage of neutral gray).

Here we go again with the screwed up terminologies

Gold Master = The physical disc which is inserted into a mass production line for replication.

Golden Master = A software version/stage as used by Apple to designate a release that will be made public as a production version.

Please MacRumors... get it right for once!!!

Remains to be seen, I guess. Preference pane is not a must, the prefs can very well be set within the player. Hopefully they have done it right...
