Every new OS X launch, especially with upgrade discs has always had the option for full erase, reformat and install. Listened to you? It's not like the option wasn't there before.

The OP's probably referring to the WWDC build which did not have a clean install option, only upgrade in place.

If I recall correctly, wasn't the GM of Leopard done just a few weeks prior to the official release? So if SL indeed went GM, maybe we'll see it before September 25. I guess we won't know for sure until Apple official announces it though.

Grand Central Dispatch is for CPUs, have nothing to do with graphic cards. You might be talking about OpenCL, Apple already listed the cards that supports OpenCL. There was a seed with graphic drivers update, don't know if it includes your GTX 285. Probably not, it'll be released via an update later on most likely.

I stand corrected. Thanks Mikhail

I hope they have quite a few fixes in the pipeline. I was just thinking this week that they have a lot of work to be done on SL before the GM is released. Makes me nervous for how much software will break upon release. I have been using all the builds on my primary machine. Some are much more stable then others. The recent is stable but has lots of issues with 3rd party software crashing on it (pity for adobe, their stuff always breaks first)

like what software?

According to the apple website for the up-to-date program,"Your completed order form must be postmarked or faxed within 90 days of the date of your purchase of a qualifying computer or Xserve (described in this offer) or by December 26, 2009, whichever is earlier."

so December 26- 90 days = approx. Sept. 26 for a release date?

i know it's kind of stating the obvious, but it's worth noting since they put those specific restrictions on the promotion. Just saying.

I don't think the Family Packs will be flying out the door, but I've never been around for an OS X launch. Is it like iPhone Day? Standing in long lines, mass crowding in and around the store?

Similar, but much faster lines in my experience. When Leopard came out, I had pre-ordered and received it at around 10AM at my house, and it wasn't released retail until 6PM; I decided to go to the Apple store anyway since they were giving away free shirts; it was a lot of fun, and the line was very fast despite being all the way across the mall.

I think all OS X releases occurred on either a Friday or a Saturday (Panther?), with 10.1 being an exception since it was a web upgrade?

Also, all releases tended to be the last weekend of the month.

Panther was also released on a Friday, 6PM to be exact and 10.1 was not a web upgrade, it was released to retail stores that you had to go pick it up from, unless you ordered it through Apple online.

Yeah, that's what I though, but I didn't remember the release for Tiger (or earlier). I was working Apple Retail for the Leopard launch, though, which was why I remembered that.

so if i upgrade, what happens to the apps that dont work, do they just stay there untill they are updated or does SL trash them or what?

Has every OS X.x release been somewhere in the neighborhood of $29?

Okay, if you truly think that the Snow Leopard disc will be a full version that doesn't require a preinstall of Leopard for $29 then why is the boxed version gonna be $169? It's currently $169 with a full version of Leopard. Hey anything can happen, true, but we're talking about Apple here, do you honestly think they will sell the full version of Snow Leopard (which they spent time removing old code and offering new 64 bit features) for only $29?

Yes. Regular and family-pack versions of Leopard are the same and have been since they've been offered, AFAIK. It's an honor system. I expect it to be a full retail copy.

10.1 was the full version on an upgrade disc. There was a way to hack a plist and re-burn the image to CD so that you didn't have to have 10.0 installed.

So, it's possible SL is the same way, but I'm sure Apple has a more advanced way of checking than they did with 10.1.

Adobe needs to rewrite their software from scratch instead of releasing a new Creative Suite every 12-18 months. Just sit tight on CS4, patch up the holes where needed, and start a rewrite. Their software is starting to look and behave like Windows... bloated, buggy, underpowered and mostly un-64bit. There is no reason why, in this day and age, Photoshop and Illustrator can't use more than one core on a processor to open or save a file. They are delaying the inevitable which will be more costly for them in the long run.

And not only has all the Quicktime Pro stuff been removed, there also doesn't appear to be any way to purchase QT Pro or add that functionality back in. Unless that's just not in the current builds. I really miss seeing a movie's properties to be able to add/change different tracks. And exporting.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can still keep the older version of Quicktime in Snow Leopard. I would figure that you would still have the ability to use your serial to unlock those features.

I agree that this is troubling since Quicktime Pro was so incredibly useful and it appears to be taking the same route as iMovie. Hopefully like iMovie they eventually build those features back in.

You are right: Panther was a Friday release & I corrected the error. Saturday releases were 10.0 & 10.2.

I'm hoping it will be easy for hackintosh so I don't have to buy a $1750 computer just to get a matte screen and to run it.
