I hope they have quite a few fixes in the pipeline. I was just thinking this week that they have a lot of work to be done on SL before the GM is released. Makes me nervous for how much software will break upon release. I have been using all the builds on my primary machine. Some are much more stable then others. The recent is stable but has lots of issues with 3rd party software crashing on it (pity for adobe, their stuff always breaks first)

Also, if you noticed... the GM number doesn't have a letter at the end of it. The betas always have a letter like g, a, j, f and such.

Other than 10A421a, I dont recall any other beta number on SL having a letter, unless im mistaken?

Remains to be seen, I guess. Preference pane is not a must, the prefs can very well be set within the player. Hopefully they have done it right...

I meant preferences in general, not just a pane in System Pref. There are lot of people who want QTX to start playing once it open a file and there are some people who don't. So how do we set it? They really need to add a preference menu to QTX either in System Pref or in the player's file menu.

I won't/can't be getting it since I'm still on a PPC, but I wonder when it will be installed on demo machines in stores to play with. Before or during the general public release?

The 'a' in the end means Intel-build. This was added when PPC builds first had their Intel-sibilings with Tiger.

The build number "10A432" means Snow Leopard kernel version 'A' build number 432 --> that translates into 10.6.0 for the general public.

Once released, Apple begins from 10B001 or something, meaning Snow Leopard kernel version 'B' build something, which would translate into 10.6.1

And so on.

If there was a PPC build around, that would have been the "10A432" and the Intel build was "10A432a". But since they've decided to drop PPC releases, they just call it "10A432".

If it has free Quicktime Pro (as in the new Quicktime X) then that alone is worth $29 if you ask me.

If you are thinking that Quicktime X = Quicktime Pro, I think you have a very big disappointment coming. I am willing (hoping) to be corrected but as far as I understand it, Quicktime X is actually a complete castration of the old Quicktime. Aside from a limited 'trim' function it is solely a player (maybe a better player than the original Quicktime, but just a player nonetheless). All the stuff that I found incredibly useful in Quicktime Pro, for editing, chopping changing movies in a quick and easy fashion has been removed in Quicktime X. As I say, I am willing to be corrected but I think Quicktime X is going to disappoint a lot of people big time.

Snow in the Summer

The heck with the end of September. How about the end of August?

I am curious how they will distribute Snow to those that just bought a shiny new MacBook Pro?! I don't want to have going through the post for weeks after release.

Here's to hoping that $29 DVD doesn't require a previously installed version of Leopard and you can just do a clean install.

How in heck do you think it will know if you're a Leopard user or not? It does require you to be a Leopard user. :p

If backgrounds are the first and only bad thing you can think of about OSX, then things look great to you :) Seriously, most people use something of their own (and die-hard graphical designers use some percentage of neutral gray).

They're not. I just pointed out that the last UI change was including some new backgrounds, which I found underwhelming.

I hope we have an option for a CLEAN install. Apple - you better have listened to us and give us this option!

Every new OS X launch, especially with upgrade discs has always had the option for full erase, reformat and install. Listened to you? It's not like the option wasn't there before.

... Is it like iPhone Day? Standing in long lines, mass crowding in and around the store?

It is where I am from. I stood in line for the Leopard Release at the Apple Store Smith Haven Mall on Long Island. Moves a hell of a lot quicker than iPhone lines though. They have people floating around the floor with handhelds for checkout.

And not only has all the Quicktime Pro stuff been removed, there also doesn't appear to be any way to purchase QT Pro or add that functionality back in. Unless that's just not in the current builds. I really miss seeing a movie's properties to be able to add/change different tracks. And exporting.

Except Leopard launched on a Friday.

I think all OS X releases occurred on either a Friday or a Saturday (Cheetah & Jaguar), with 10.1 being an exception since it was a web upgrade.

Also, all releases tended to be the last weekend of the month.

UPDATE: From Wikipedia: MacOS X release dates

I say: Early September: iPods + iTunes 9.0
Friday Sep. 25: SL 10.6

Has every OS X.x release been somewhere in the neighborhood of $29?
