I've been burned before by installing new releases.

Who hasn't? This is Apple we're talking about! The last few releases (10.4.0 and 10.5.0) were pretty bad, based on the reports on these boards, and my own experiences. The 10.3.0 release was much more stable, but that was 5 years ago, when Apple Inc. was still Apple Computers, and when computers and professional software were their only major products to sell.

I read somewhere in the forums that if you bought a Mac between December 2008 and June 2009 you get a free upgrade?

Is that true?

I got my laptop in June 2009 so how do I find out about eligibility??

will it be a download?

Got it this morning around 11 AM from FedEx.
Took 45 minutes to upgrade in place, no issues what so ever.

However it comes up as 32 bit kernel and not 64 bit kernel by default.

I have a MBP Unibody 5,1 system

If I hold 6 and 4 during the boot process it comes up as 64 bit, and seems to run fine.

If I reboot and do not hold the 6 and 4 key it goes back to 32 bit kernel. Not sure why it defaults to 32 bit.

Anyone knows why Apple would default it to 32 instead of 64?
Anyone knows how to make it default to 64?
Anyone knows if switching between GPU, does it still require to logout?
Can SL now use both GPU's to speed things up?

Any input appreciated
Thanks

Fedex has NOT arrived for me... but EVERYTHING else you asked could have come from my post. Exact same questions I have... Both GPU's running would probably not help battery life when on battery but it sure would be nice to have OpenCL using one of those GPU's as a dedicated additional processor.

Wtf?

I ordered mine on the 12th and it still says has not shipped on my order. How'd y'all get yours already?

I arrived at local Apple store (Modesto, Ca) at 10:10 am and I was the 4th one there to buy snow leopard, no t-shirt give away or anything else, and I got the family pack for my iMac and MacBook for $53 (with tax). Too late now, but since apple is not verifying the serial number when installing, I'm wondering if I could have saved $20 and have gotten the single version for both my machines?

Not true.

You might be eligible for the up-to-date program, where you can get Snow Leopard for $10. You have to order it, not a download.

Off today. Picked it up from my local AAPL store this morning:

Installed great on my MBA rev.C!

Ordered from the Up To Date program, but didn't feel like waiting.

Oh well, guess AAPL made $29 from me today while I wait for my UTD disk.

For those who want to know: the md5sum on every file of the final DVD is the same as those on the 10A432 build. So to confirm what is common knowledge: it is exactly the same.

I bought the Snow Leopard at the upgrade price, to upgrade my Leopard MacBook, but it seems that the DVD is not an upgrade DVD (the usual script for checking the installed OS X version is missing).

For some reason mine hasn't shipped yet...

Mine shipped yesterday so I was expecting today since 2 class in royal mail usually deliver next day here. Well, not this time apparently so Saturday then.
I just hope it will fit through the door, because if not I might wait till Monday:mad:

$35 even in Canada

Gotta love the buying experience... pick up box and hand to sales dude. Scan, swipe card, walk out. Receipt arrives in e-mail before I'm out the door.

I picked this up simply because the store is across the street from my work, but I'm waiting for a new HD before installing. Should be here Monday, I got a 7200.12 which seems to be one of the fastest of the desktop 7.2k RPM drives.

just noticed the Snow Leopard says I need a new battery...weird?!

I love the fact that Bootcamp 3.0 allows you to read Mac volumes.

I also love the new Wake On Demand feature. I use a free internet service called LogMeIn that allows you to access your Mac (or PC) from any other computer. I could never access my iMac from work because my iMac was always asleep. Hopefully (I'll try it when I install it tonight), this will allow me to access it even when it's asleep.

I also use this service to connect to my kid's iMac in Mazatlan (I'm in Vancouver) and I just got an email saying that they will have the wake on demand feature in a couple of weeks. Too bad Apple beat them to the punch, although having options is always good.

Bought it this morning. Didn't have the USB SuperDrive for my Air, so I had it installed at the store. Of course it wouldn't install. Genius was bewildered and even offered to give me a new computer with a drop-in disk instead.

After 2 hours of troubleshooting we figured out that PGP was messing around with my partitions and wouldn't let me upgrade. With PGP removed the computer was ready for upgrade. Unfortunately I didn't have any more time to wait at the Apple Store, so I ended up buying a SuperDrive with the intention of returning it after I do the installation. The Genius even said just keep the box and receipt and it will be fine.

I also got Snow Leopard Server. Was only $249 which is very cheap to say the least. I should be installing that on my Mac Pro later on. Unfortunately, I need to do a clean install since I cannot upgrade from regular Leopard to Snow Leopard Server.

I look forward to installing Snow Leopard later tonight. I'll probably return the SuperDrive afterwards.

Can you do a clean install with the upgrade disk?!

It's not an upgrade disk. It's actually a full install disk. Apple just changed it so the only way to do a clean install is to manually erase the disk with a magnetized needle… I'm kidding—use Disk Utility, and then complete the installation like normal.

Can anyone who has been to a retail store today confirm whether or not they're giving away t-shirts?

I asked the people at the store and they told me they didn't have T-Shirts to give out; everyone was a bit disappointed about that.

You can now scan wirelessly now. :)

My HP could scan wirelessly like the two or so years ago I bought it. I can even send faxes wirelessly (like a document from Word directly to the printer to fax without ever making a physical copy).

Anyway, LOVE the plastic wrap that they used to secure the box to the outer shipping carton. Not that cheap saran wrap but like high quality film. Wow.

Got it this morning around 11 AM from FedEx....

Anyone knows how to make it default to 64?...

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

Locate:

<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string></string>

Change it to:

<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>arch=x86_64</string>

All I can say is this thing is FAST. Like REALLY fast. Not just "snappier", FAST.
yes i agree. i remember installing 10.1 and how slow it was compared to OS 9 (overall responsiveness, opening and closing folders, apps, etc). every release after i hoped that the performance would improve to OS 9-like speeds and
so far i think 10.6 has finally done that.

I'm surprised nobody has listed the build number after all the fuss, just to be sure ;)

Also, anybody notice the crappy gradient in safari (possibly other programs) at the top??? Nice!
