I heard that Steve Jobs did not attend OS X's birthday party. Rather, he sent a thumb drive with a video of him at the developers conference a few years ago where he used a coffin to bury OS 9. Rumor is that writing on the thumb drive said "U R next NeXT - Steve"

I still think OS X peaked from an aesthetic and reliability standpoint with Panther. They've added more capabilities of course, but I'm always noticing fresh things missing with each release, and what with the interface becoming progressively duller and dingier....

That said, if OS X goes away, I'll simply stop using a computer. The alternatives aren't worth the suffering.

Wow, 10 years ago I didn't even have a computer yet... Those times were waaay different :D

Don't forget that OS X is based on NeXTstep, which goes back to the mid 1980s.

I'm looking at my NeXTstation Color right now...

I remember getting this free (along with a white 'X' t-shirt) at a local Mac store. Don't know where my disc is, but I still wear the shirt :D

:) And in one year, OS XI will be released, on OS X's 11th birthday? One can dream.

I still remember using my iBook g3 with 10.1... those were the days!

Technically I started with Panther, but I bought a Mac Mini like the day after Tiger was released so it came with an upgrade disc. I figured I could try out a Mini and see if I could use a Mac full time and well...

2005 Mac Mini -> 12" PowerBook G4 (last generation) -> 2nd Generation MacBook (black) -> 15" MacBook Pro (2008 Unibody) -> 13" MacBook Pro (last generation).

I ran Tiger through most of that span. I never felt like dropping the money on Leopard and finally got it with the MBP. I did, however, upgrade to Snow Leopard on day 1. I've been pleased with every upgrade and look forward to Lion.

(Ha! And this post just made me a 6502!)

My OS X Public Beta folder still sits proudly on my desk at work. 10.0 was pretty lacking and ssssssssllllllllllllllllllooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww. 10.1 was a huge improvement speed-wise.

10.3 was probably the first really usable version that I no longer needed to dual boot into OS 9. Oh, and I still have my Panther Dog Tags they gave out at the Apple Store to us idiots who stood inline for hours.

Happy Birthday old friend!

GASP. your too picky, I fell in love with it at 10.3. Expose was a big thing in my opinion

Agreed. I think I would still be satisfied with 10.3.9 as a primary. One big up would be no sign of dashboard whatsoever. I have it running on a clamshell iBook, but exposé is not such fun on that lol.

Cool..happy birthday...

great OS

I vividly remember the advent of OS X. I naively thought it was just another operating system update. But it seemed to arrive ... slowly. VERY slowly. And so I avoided it: I loved 9. It was great! It was about a year before I adopted X and I was not happy with it. It was clunky and incomplete. It was a long time before it dawned on me that I was in a new and better world. Little did I know that it was what would turn my IRA into a gold mine, as well as turning my computer into a marvel. God bless Steve Jobs! Cheers, Dick Henry
