No reason to think the new MPs won't support 64GB. There are lower voltage FB-DIMMs now I believe. The dell's are still going to be alot more expensive for what you get than the MP. Just the different business models of Apple and Dell.

I really don't think the Mac will ever be a better deal than a dell period.

If you're buying a computer to run Windows, then it's not likely that a Mac will ever outclass a Dell or other "quality" PC hardware vendor.

If you're buying a computer to run Mac OS X, or OS X/Windows, then you have no choice but to buy a Mac.

Any arguments that get beyond this simple fact really become irrelevant, no?

Certainly the Mac Pro was a whole lot cheaper than the equivalent Dell (with the same processors and motherboard) when it came out. The Dell had a bit more customizability.

With Vista going EFI native early next year, there will effectively be no difference between a Mac or a PC running Windows.

No. The reasons why:

1. Apple switched to Intel, making things harder for me, cause I'm a broke 15 year old with a 1999 Vintage G4.

2. I really want an up-to-date tower only for once like I did two years ago, when my G4 was still in the "Supported" range!!!

3. http://sawtooth811.webs.com

kid for $120 i updated my g4 sawtooth 400 tower to a
a sonnet 1.4GHz, 512MB NVidia 5200fx, usb2.... (802.11n coming)
it's working, i can get my guitar on garageband,
play with quartz composer and coca, also makes a good server
If you're good at soldering you can build a IR receiver
for frontrow.

I don't know which I enjoyed more in this thread, the bait or the sincere righteous indignation.

GG all round.

The Mac Pro will likely be priced better than what Dell offer on the same configuration.

Early in 2007, I priced comparable systems from Apple, Dell, and HP to replace my system at work. A Unix- or Linux- based system is the most appropriate platform for my job but do need something that can run Windows to generate Visio drawings.

As I already had a 24" LCD display, that I intended to use with the new system there was no need to include a display in the cost of the new system.

Apple's 2.66 GHz quad-processor Mac Pro was the least expensive system. It was $700.00 less expensive than the equivalent Dell system. Unfortunately, the company has a contract with Dell and the cost savings of buying an Apple Mac Pro fell on deaf ears.

Between buying my first computer in the Eighties and the Apple PowerPC G5 that I bought in 2006, I have built all of my home systems from components. Each of my system upgrades has cost between $2000 and $3000 sans display.

Apple's price point is right in the middle of that range. The components used are equivalent to what I would have selected had I done the engineering and built a system from components.

Why is there the perception that the Mac Pro costs too much?

Hahahaha...

So WE are giving YOU money to smash a Powerbook g4? There are kids in third world countries who will do ANYTHING to have a laptop in general, and what do you want to do? How about just keeping what you have? How about keeping it, and running folding@home on it?

Not all teenagers are like this... I needed a laptop for school so i went with a MBP. I used to have a mac mini 1.5ghz and i was happy with it.

Friggin unbelievable. Be happy with what you have...

In more than one and a half years the Mac Pro hasn't changed in price although the most expensive components got considerably cheaper (Xeons, HD, RAM, Graphics)...
It isn't just overengeneered but overpriced, too.

Those of us who've been around Macs "before it was cool", may want to remind these "overpriced" mongers that the pro level Mac has actually come down in price over the years, and has held steady for quite sometime now.
The price remains the same on each upgrade, but you get much more for your money.

ie: 8600's = $2999, 9600's = $3900, G4's, G5's, MacPros = $2700-$3500.

If you buy a computer for price, you're probably also driving a Hyundai.
I would actually prefer that they steer clear of making the "consumer" happy and go back to pleasing the 'pro'.
