T-18 months until Sawtooth comes back in here pissing and moaning because Apple isn't supporting his G5 with their latest iteration of the Mac OS 10.6.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!!!
Apple just craped on my hopes and dreams.

I just got a mac pro for my Bday specs:

16.5 inch screen

250 Gbs HD space (second another 200 Gbs)

Eight core proccesser (can't remember the speed =\)

Nvidia 8600

can't remember the rest of my specs because I'm at school I'll update this once I get home.:D

Your spec's on your Mac Pro are very unusual. Especially the 16.5 inch screen and Nvidia 8600!

I've been looking into benchmarks for this stuff a lot lately, as we are planning on upgrading my mom's g4, and most of the specs we find comparing mac pros are for g5s... and i've seen that g5's are even left in the dust by mac pros...

a 2.0 refurb macpro will kick the g5's butt, and if you are keeping your g4 for classic and such... and the random non-universal app (even though the mac pro may still tear those up probably anyway.. my CD macbook pro performed with word and photoshop 7.0 and cs far better then my tibook did natively) then i see no real good reason to get a quad g5. I can't imagine finding one much cheaper then even a 2.0 macpro or such... not to mention in 6 weeks the prices will probably end up dropping a lot again on refurbs because *hopefully* the mac pros will be updated. I think it would be a mistake to spend money on a g5 now. Not that it can't do things for you well, but compared to a low line mac pro, it's a waste of money and will be left in the dust once 10.6 comes out too. Go intel. Period. :)

i think you should add 'for me' to the end of your thread title.
obviously, you're not using it for business or you would understand that the cost really isn't that much. i've paid for my macs easily within a year (and would probably do it sooner, but i can't spend as much time on my biz right now).

As for the look, I have to admit i think you're nuts :) My G5 and MP are side by side and except for an extra USB, a FW800 and an optical drive slot,..they're..um...virtually the same looking machine.

cheers,
keebler

No. The reasons why:

1. Apple switched to Intel, making things harder for me, cause I'm a broke 15 year old with a 1999 Vintage G4.

I'm sure Apple takes into consideration broke 15yo's that are using out-dated when they think about what architectures to continue supporting.

By the time 10.6 comes out, you'll be a broke college student. Then you can use student loans/scholarships to buy a new computer with an edu discount. Guess what? A G5 will still work when 10.6 comes out. Just as it does today. If a G5 will cover your needs, then buy it and be happy you didn't waste money getting too much machine.

Student loans and indentured servitude, because you WILL pay the money back ... because the stundent loan sharks will haunt you far longer than the IRS ever will.

Unless you get a bunch of credit cards, transfer the student loans to them, and go bankrupt.

just looked at that website.... geez!

it's your own fault for buying leopard if your computers are too slow for it.

If you're not old enough to get a job and earn the money, why do you NEED a Mac Pro? You're just asking people to give you $3500. For what?

Go buy a mini. It'll kill your G4.

The growing teenager sense of entitlement (especially on these) is really depressing and makes me not want to have kids.

Very true, but if you are responsible with your money and only purchase stuff that you can actually pay off (in the near future), then it's not really a problem.

If Sawtooth were to buy a base MP in college and then start using it for some extra income, I'd say it'd be a good investment. But if he bought it to add a few more fps on some game, then I'd say he deserves the hunt down from any potential loan sharks.

The growing culture of the cyberpathetic.

I suck as a human, give me money.

Personally, I'd rather toss money to a chimpanzee.

If you get a minimum wage job, say $5 per hour after tax. work 20 hours per week, you only have to work about 6 weeks to get a new intel Mac Mini.

Or work less if you buy a refurb mini. It's much faster than PowerMac Sawtooth.

Ha! Mac Pro's cost too much? You guys in the US don't know how lucky you are!! I costed a Mac Pro at the spec I wanted, together with a few extras (500GB hard drive, 4GB RAM, 23" monitor etc etc) at Apple's online US store. The total cost was $6310.00. Converted to GBP, that equals £3,050.96, at today's prices. But to buy the exact same setup here in the UK from Apple's UK online store, it costs £4215.00 ($8717.46) That's almost £1200 ($2400) difference!

I'm wondering, how much would I save if I bought one in the US and got it shipped over? Is this even possible? Heck, for £300 ($600) I could fly over to NY, buy a MP, fly back same day with it on my lap:)

Now what is it that you forgot in your calculation?

Disgusting.

That said, maybe you should post some of your work to prove that a new computer is actually worthwhile… new equipment does not equal better skills.

And has anyone mentioned the fact you bought an iPhone!?!? If you really really needed this computer you could have bought a new one for the price of that phone.

The best can work with bad equipment (how were people making movies 5 years ago? The horror!), their time is just too valuable to waste.

Well, yeah. That's why some of the best authors still write by longhand, or by typewriter, or with old laptops with (gasp!) single core processors. If you know what you're doing, you realize that the tool you use to produce your masterpiece is just that -- a tool. Whether it's a new one or an old one doesn't matter nearly as much as your ability to wield it. It's really hard to remember this, but it's worth remembering. The clothes don't make the (wo)man. And Superman's powers don't have anything to do with that "S" on his chest.
