Well... I'm glad my MP is humming away with the new firmware update and that it's humming great. I'm also glad Apple is not like Dell or any of the other hardware companies where they release a firmware update after several months (if lucky), saying "yeah, we'll release a firmware update soon, or now... not now, but soon, a bit later, yeah, in a couple months". It's just good to know Apple released it and to hear things are running smooth. :D

Agreed!

I'm also happy with Apple's handling of the reboot-on-wake problem. I'm also very happy I didn't inconvenience myself or Apple by returning my Mac Pro one or more times like some people on this list in order to "fix" the problem with sleep. The new system was fixed in the same quarter that it was released and that's not too bad compared to other computer vendors.

I guess I understand Apple's reluctance to communicate each and every bug's status and manage customer's expectations via forums or blogs; I think that works well for small companies but it doesn't scale well IMHO. At the larger scales, these methods will eat up resources and money that could be better put to fixing the bugs and well, profits.

Aside from the reboot on wake issue, the system was from my perspective very well built and and bug free; and the sleep on wake issue didn't actually prevent me from getting work done. Yes, the workarounds caused more power consumption and/or longer start-up times, but I was still able to use the system to its fullest during the first quarter of 2008.

My 2 cents.

the only thing which got worse with a firmware update is the idle-noise of the 2600xt after the graphics "update"
It's better to have a Mac which doesn't reboot instead of wakin up, though

Raid....

Thanks Kittiyut for the link, i read it, i have to say i also orderd it already before i read it ,lol.

I'll be setting it up with a SAS drive in jbot as boot drive ( so that the EFI updates won't be a problem i hope ), and the other 3 drives will be normal sata drives in raid 5.

I just hope this is something i can do with the apple raid card and not something i can't do.

Any comments on that maybe ? Or should i ask that in te raid card thread ?

snappier after firmware?

Does anyone else "feel" like their Pro is snappier after the update-- mine does. But maybe I'm just pleased with the fix of the wake-restart problem.:)

Just an FYI from someone who has the RAID card and 4 SAS drives... You can't mix SAS and SATA drives internally on a Mac Pro with a RAID card, it's one type or the other.

well, my rom is version MP31.006C.B02 and the 2600 update has fixed my screen lock up issue, but I do not have any sleep reboot problems. So should I perform this firmware update since it shows up on my software update window?

Problems with Maya

After I installed this update I can't use Maya anymore. The viewports stay blank. Booting of the same hard disk on another Mac Pro (w/o the update) has Maya running fine.

So be aware.

yes, indeed. mine does as well since the firmware upgrade replaced my mac os x installation completely ;-)

and some people say it helps against earthquakes and cardial infarct and....

TY for this info scotttydawg ,ill be canceling my sas order then ,i cant affort more then one at the moment.
I was so looking forward to having a 15000rpm SAS boot disk, ill have to go for a smaller and slower raptor then, hope that will work.

Second bit of input, you can get the SAS drives for $469 a piece from discountechnology.com (it's exact same drive Apple sells) just in case you still want them. The model Apple uses is a Seagate Cheetah ST3300655SS. Saves about 40% to buy them this way.

No maya issues here -- thankfully.

Thanks again Scottydawg , i still want them , but i'll have to wait a little bit to get all 4 of them so i'll just start with the sata drives i still have here and make the switch later.

I had the maya issue for a long time before the update, however I juste have to hit space once (switch between 4 viewport/1viewport) to get the 3D.

Didn't check since the update though

EFI 1.3 Update - droning sound!

Hi,
Since updating my firmware, I have noticed more noise from my machine. Namely, a droning sound. Has anyone noticed anything similar.
Regards,
Stephen.

As I mentioned before, with the graphics update the ATI card doesn't downclock itself as much as before on low load and therefore produces more heat and noise when idle. (and draws 30W more...)

You can test if it's the graphics card by starting a screensaver like Arabesque. the noise should become a little bit louder.
